بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
ٱلۡحَمۡدُ al-ḥamdu (All) the praises and thanks لِلَّهِ lillahi (be) to Allah ٱلَّذِي alladhī the One Who خَلَقَ khalaqa created ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ wal-arḍa and the earth وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala and made ٱلظُّلُمَٰتِ l-ẓulumāti the darkness[es] وَٱلنُّورَۖ wal-nūra and the light ثُمَّ thumma Then ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُواْ kafarū disbelieved بِرَبِّهِمۡ birabbihim in their Lord يَعۡدِلُونَ yaʿdilūna equate others with Him
al-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wajaʿala l-ẓulumāti wal-nūra thumma alladhīna kafarū birabbihim yaʿdilūna
All praise is for Allah Who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light. Yet the disbelievers set up equals to their Lord ˹in worship˺.
هُوَ huwa He ٱلَّذِي alladhī (is) the One Who خَلَقَكُم khalaqakum created you مِّن min from طِينٖ ṭīnin clay ثُمَّ thumma then قَضَىٰٓ qaḍā He decreed أَجَلٗاۖ ajalan a term وَأَجَلٞ wa-ajalun and a term مُّسَمًّى musamman specified عِندَهُۥۖ ʿindahu with Him ثُمَّ thumma yet أَنتُمۡ antum you تَمۡتَرُونَ tamtarūna doubt
huwa alladhī khalaqakum min ṭīnin thumma qaḍā ajalan wa-ajalun musamman ʿindahu thumma antum tamtarūna
He is the One Who created you from clay, then appointed a term ˹for your death˺ and another known only to Him ˹for your resurrection˺—yet you continue to doubt!
وَهُوَ wahuwa And He ٱللَّهُ l-lahu (is) Allah فِي fī in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَفِي wafī and in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth يَعۡلَمُ yaʿlamu He knows سِرَّكُمۡ sirrakum your secret وَجَهۡرَكُمۡ wajahrakum and what you make public وَيَعۡلَمُ wayaʿlamu and He knows مَا mā what تَكۡسِبُونَ taksibūna you earn
wahuwa l-lahu fī l-samāwāti wafī l-arḍi yaʿlamu sirrakum wajahrakum wayaʿlamu mā taksibūna
He is the Only True God in the heavens and the earth. He knows whatever you conceal and whatever you reveal, and knows whatever you do.
وَمَا wamā And not تَأۡتِيهِم tatīhim comes to them مِّنۡ min [of] ءَايَةٖ āyatin any sign مِّنۡ min from ءَايَٰتِ āyāti (the) Signs رَبِّهِمۡ rabbihim (of) their Lord إِلَّا illā but كَانُواْ kānū they are عَنۡهَا ʿanhā from it مُعۡرِضِينَ muʿ'riḍīna turning away
wamā tatīhim min āyatin min āyāti rabbihim illā kānū ʿanhā muʿ'riḍīna
Whenever a sign comes to them from their Lord, they turn away from it.
فَقَدۡ faqad Then indeed كَذَّبُواْ kadhabū they denied بِٱلۡحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi the truth لَمَّا lammā when جَآءَهُمۡ jāahum it came to them فَسَوۡفَ fasawfa but soon يَأۡتِيهِمۡ yatīhim will come to them أَنۢبَٰٓؤُاْ anbāu news مَا mā (of) what كَانُواْ kānū they used to بِهِۦ bihi [at it] يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ yastahziūna mock
faqad kadhabū bil-ḥaqi lammā jāahum fasawfa yatīhim anbāu mā kānū bihi yastahziūna
They have indeed rejected the truth when it came to them, so they will soon face the consequences of their ridicule.
أَلَمۡ alam Did not يَرَوۡاْ yaraw they see كَمۡ kam how many أَهۡلَكۡنَا ahlaknā We destroyed مِن min from قَبۡلِهِم qablihim before them مِّن min of قَرۡنٖ qarnin generations مَّكَّنَّٰهُمۡ makkannāhum We had established them فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth مَا mā what لَمۡ lam not نُمَكِّن numakkin We (have) established لَّكُمۡ lakum for you وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا wa-arsalnā And We sent ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa (rain from) the sky عَلَيۡهِم ʿalayhim upon them مِّدۡرَارٗا mid'rāran showering abundantly وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā and We made ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرَ l-anhāra the rivers تَجۡرِي tajrī flow مِن min from تَحۡتِهِمۡ taḥtihim underneath them فَأَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُم fa-ahlaknāhum Then We destroyed them بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ bidhunūbihim for their sins وَأَنشَأۡنَا wa-anshanā and We raised مِنۢ min from بَعۡدِهِمۡ baʿdihim after them قَرۡنًا qarnan generations ءَاخَرِينَ ākharīna other
alam yaraw kam ahlaknā min qablihim min qarnin makkannāhum fī l-arḍi mā lam numakkin lakum wa-arsalnā l-samāa ʿalayhim mid'rāran wajaʿalnā l-anhāra tajrī min taḥtihim fa-ahlaknāhum bidhunūbihim wa-anshanā min baʿdihim qarnan ākharīna
Have they not seen how many ˹disbelieving˺ peoples We destroyed before them? We had made them more established in the land than you. We sent down abundant rain for them and made rivers flow at their feet. Then We destroyed them for their sins and replaced them with other peoples.
وَلَوۡ walaw And (even) if نَزَّلۡنَا nazzalnā We (had) sent down عَلَيۡكَ ʿalayka to you كِتَٰبٗا kitāban a written Scripture فِي fī in قِرۡطَاسٖ qir'ṭāsin a parchment فَلَمَسُوهُ falamasūhu and they touched it بِأَيۡدِيهِمۡ bi-aydīhim with their hands لَقَالَ laqāla surely (would) have said ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوٓاْ kafarū disbelieved إِنۡ in Not هَٰذَآ hādhā (is) this إِلَّا illā but سِحۡرٞ siḥ'run magic مُّبِينٞ mubīnun clear
walaw nazzalnā ʿalayka kitāban fī qir'ṭāsin falamasūhu bi-aydīhim laqāla alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnun
Had We sent down to you ˹O Prophet˺ a revelation in writing and they were to touch it with their own hands, the disbelievers would still have said, “This is nothing but pure magic!”
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they said لَوۡلَآ lawlā Why has not been أُنزِلَ unzila sent down عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi to him مَلَكٞۖ malakun an Angel وَلَوۡ walaw And if أَنزَلۡنَا anzalnā We (had) sent down مَلَكٗا malakan an Angel لَّقُضِيَ laquḍiya surely (would) have been decided ٱلۡأَمۡرُ l-amru the matter ثُمَّ thumma then لَا lā no يُنظَرُونَ yunẓarūna respite would have been granted to them
waqālū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi malakun walaw anzalnā malakan laquḍiya l-amru thumma lā yunẓarūna
They say, “Why has no ˹visible˺ angel come with him?” Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have certainly been settled ˹at once˺, and they would have never been given more time ˹to repent˺.
وَلَوۡ walaw And if جَعَلۡنَٰهُ jaʿalnāhu We had made him مَلَكٗا malakan an Angel لَّجَعَلۡنَٰهُ lajaʿalnāhu certainly We (would) have made him رَجُلٗا rajulan a man وَلَلَبَسۡنَا walalabasnā and certainly We (would) have obscured عَلَيۡهِم ʿalayhim to them مَّا mā what يَلۡبِسُونَ yalbisūna they are obscuring
walaw jaʿalnāhu malakan lajaʿalnāhu rajulan walalabasnā ʿalayhim mā yalbisūna
And if We had sent an angel, We would have certainly made it ˹assume the form of˺ a man—leaving them more confused than they already are.
وَلَقَدِ walaqadi And indeed ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ us'tuh'zi-a were mocked بِرُسُلٖ birusulin Messengers مِّن min from قَبۡلِكَ qablika before you فَحَاقَ faḥāqa but surrounded بِٱلَّذِينَ bi-alladhīna those who سَخِرُواْ sakhirū scoffed مِنۡهُم min'hum of them مَّا mā what كَانُواْ kānū they used to بِهِۦ bihi [at it] يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ yastahziūna mock
walaqadi us'tuh'zi-a birusulin min qablika faḥāqa bi-alladhīna sakhirū min'hum mā kānū bihi yastahziūna
˹Other˺ messengers had already been ridiculed before you ˹O Prophet˺, but those who mocked them were overtaken by what they used to ridicule.
قُلۡ qul Say سِيرُواْ sīrū Travel فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth ثُمَّ thumma and ٱنظُرُواْ unẓurū see كَيۡفَ kayfa how كَانَ kāna was عَٰقِبَةُ ʿāqibatu (the) end ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ l-mukadhibīna (of) the rejecters
qul sīrū fī l-arḍi thumma unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīna
Say, “Travel throughout the land and see the fate of the deniers.”
قُل qul Say لِّمَن liman To whom (belongs) مَّا mā what فِي fī (is) in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ wal-arḍi and the earth قُل qul Say لِّلَّهِۚ lillahi To Allah كَتَبَ kataba He has decreed عَلَىٰ ʿalā upon نَفۡسِهِ nafsihi Himself ٱلرَّحۡمَةَۚ l-raḥmata the Mercy لَيَجۡمَعَنَّكُمۡ layajmaʿannakum Surely He will assemble you إِلَىٰ ilā on يَوۡمِ yawmi (the) Day ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection لَا lā (there is) no رَيۡبَ rayba doubt فِيهِۚ fīhi about it ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those who خَسِرُوٓاْ khasirū have lost أَنفُسَهُمۡ anfusahum themselves فَهُمۡ fahum then they لَا lā (do) not يُؤۡمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe
qul liman mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi qul lillahi kataba ʿalā nafsihi l-raḥmata layajmaʿannakum ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati lā rayba fīhi alladhīna khasirū anfusahum fahum lā yu'minūna
Ask ˹them, O Prophet˺, “To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?” Say, “To Allah!” He has taken upon Himself to be Merciful. He will certainly gather ˹all of˺ you together for the Day of Judgment—about which there is no doubt. But those who have ruined themselves will never believe.
۞ وَلَهُۥ walahu And for Him مَا mā (is) whatever سَكَنَ sakana dwells فِي fī in ٱلَّيۡلِ al-layli the night وَٱلنَّهَارِۚ wal-nahāri and the day وَهُوَ wahuwa and He ٱلسَّمِيعُ l-samīʿu (is) All-Hearing ٱلۡعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu All-Knowing
walahu mā sakana fī al-layli wal-nahāri wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu
To Him belongs whatever exists in the day and night. And He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
قُلۡ qul Say أَغَيۡرَ aghayra Is it other than ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah أَتَّخِذُ attakhidhu I (should) take وَلِيّٗا waliyyan (as) a protector فَاطِرِ fāṭiri Creator ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ wal-arḍi and the earth وَهُوَ wahuwa while (it is) He يُطۡعِمُ yuṭ'ʿimu Who feeds وَلَا walā and not يُطۡعَمُۗ yuṭ'ʿamu He is fed قُلۡ qul Say إِنِّيٓ innī Indeed I أُمِرۡتُ umir'tu [I] am commanded أَنۡ an that أَكُونَ akūna I be أَوَّلَ awwala (the) first مَنۡ man who أَسۡلَمَۖ aslama submits (to Allah) وَلَا walā and not تَكُونَنَّ takūnanna be مِنَ mina of ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ l-mush'rikīna the polytheists
qul aghayra l-lahi attakhidhu waliyyan fāṭiri l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa yuṭ'ʿimu walā yuṭ'ʿamu qul innī umir'tu an akūna awwala man aslama walā takūnanna mina l-mush'rikīna
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Will I take any guardian other than Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who provides for all and is not in need of provision?” Say, “I have been commanded to be the first to submit and not be one of the polytheists.”
قُلۡ qul Say إِنِّيٓ innī Indeed, I أَخَافُ akhāfu [I] fear إِنۡ in if عَصَيۡتُ ʿaṣaytu I disobeyed رَبِّي rabbī my Lord عَذَابَ ʿadhāba punishment يَوۡمٍ yawmin (of) a Day عَظِيمٖ ʿaẓīmin Mighty
qul innī akhāfu in ʿaṣaytu rabbī ʿadhāba yawmin ʿaẓīmin
Say, “I truly fear—if I were to disobey my Lord—the torment of a tremendous Day.”
مَّن man Whoever يُصۡرَفۡ yuṣ'raf is averted عَنۡهُ ʿanhu from it يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin that Day فَقَدۡ faqad then surely رَحِمَهُۥۚ raḥimahu He had Mercy on him وَذَٰلِكَ wadhālika And that ٱلۡفَوۡزُ l-fawzu (is) the success ٱلۡمُبِينُ l-mubīnu (the) clear
man yuṣ'raf ʿanhu yawma-idhin faqad raḥimahu wadhālika l-fawzu l-mubīnu
Whoever is spared the torment of that Day will have certainly been shown Allah’s mercy. And that is the absolute triumph.
وَإِن wa-in And if يَمۡسَسۡكَ yamsaska touches you ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah بِضُرّٖ biḍurrin with affliction فَلَا falā then no كَاشِفَ kāshifa remover لَهُۥٓ lahu of it إِلَّا illā except هُوَۖ huwa Him وَإِن wa-in And if يَمۡسَسۡكَ yamsaska He touches you بِخَيۡرٖ bikhayrin with good فَهُوَ fahuwa then He عَلَىٰ ʿalā (is) on كُلِّ kulli every شَيۡءٖ shayin thing قَدِيرٞ qadīrun All-Powerful
wa-in yamsaska l-lahu biḍurrin falā kāshifa lahu illā huwa wa-in yamsaska bikhayrin fahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin qadīrun
If Allah touches you with harm, none can undo it except Him. And if He touches you with a blessing, He is Most Capable of everything.
وَهُوَ wahuwa And He ٱلۡقَاهِرُ l-qāhiru (is) the Subjugator فَوۡقَ fawqa over عِبَادِهِۦۚ ʿibādihi His slaves وَهُوَ wahuwa And He ٱلۡحَكِيمُ l-ḥakīmu (is) the All-Wise ٱلۡخَبِيرُ l-khabīru the All-Aware
wahuwa l-qāhiru fawqa ʿibādihi wahuwa l-ḥakīmu l-khabīru
He reigns supreme over His creation. And He is the All-Wise, All-Aware.
قُلۡ qul Say أَيُّ ayyu What شَيۡءٍ shayin thing أَكۡبَرُ akbaru (is) greatest شَهَٰدَةٗۖ shahādatan (as) a testimony قُلِ quli Say ٱللَّهُۖ l-lahu Allah شَهِيدُۢ shahīdun (is) Witness بَيۡنِي baynī between me وَبَيۡنَكُمۡۚ wabaynakum and between you وَأُوحِيَ waūḥiya and has been revealed إِلَيَّ ilayya to me هَٰذَا hādhā this ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ l-qur'ānu [the] Quran لِأُنذِرَكُم li-undhirakum that I may warn you بِهِۦ bihi with it وَمَنۢ waman and whoever بَلَغَۚ balagha it reaches أَئِنَّكُمۡ a-innakum Do you truly لَتَشۡهَدُونَ latashhadūna testify أَنَّ anna that مَعَ maʿa with ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah ءَالِهَةً ālihatan (there are) gods أُخۡرَىٰۚ ukh'rā other قُل qul Say لَّآ lā Not أَشۡهَدُۚ ashhadu (do) I testify قُلۡ qul Say إِنَّمَا innamā Only هُوَ huwa He إِلَٰهٞ ilāhun (is) God وَٰحِدٞ wāḥidun One وَإِنَّنِي wa-innanī and indeed, I am بَرِيٓءٞ barīon free مِّمَّا mimmā of what تُشۡرِكُونَ tush'rikūna you associate (with Him)
qul ayyu shayin akbaru shahādatan quli l-lahu shahīdun baynī wabaynakum waūḥiya ilayya hādhā l-qur'ānu li-undhirakum bihi waman balagha a-innakum latashhadūna anna maʿa l-lahi ālihatan ukh'rā qul lā ashhadu qul innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun wa-innanī barīon mimmā tush'rikūna
Ask ˹them, O Prophet˺, “Who is the best witness?” Say, “Allah is! He is a Witness between me and you. And this Quran has been revealed to me so that, with it, I may warn you and whoever it reaches. Do you ˹pagans˺ testify that there are other gods besides Allah?” ˹Then˺ say, “I will never testify ˹to this˺!” ˹And˺ say, “There is only One God. And I totally reject whatever ˹idols˺ you associate with Him.”
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those (to) whom ءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمُ ātaynāhumu We have given them ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ l-kitāba the Book يَعۡرِفُونَهُۥ yaʿrifūnahu they recognize him كَمَا kamā as يَعۡرِفُونَ yaʿrifūna they recognize أَبۡنَآءَهُمُۘ abnāahumu their sons ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Those who خَسِرُوٓاْ khasirū lost أَنفُسَهُمۡ anfusahum themselves فَهُمۡ fahum then they لَا lā (do) not يُؤۡمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe
alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yaʿrifūnahu kamā yaʿrifūna abnāahumu alladhīna khasirū anfusahum fahum lā yu'minūna
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him ˹to be a true prophet˺ as they recognize their own children. Those who have ruined themselves will never believe.
وَمَنۡ waman And who أَظۡلَمُ aẓlamu (is) more unjust مِمَّنِ mimmani than (he) who ٱفۡتَرَىٰ if'tarā invents عَلَى ʿalā against ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah كَذِبًا kadhiban a lie أَوۡ aw or كَذَّبَ kadhaba rejects بِـَٔايَٰتِهِۦٓۚ biāyātihi His Signs إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed لَا lā not يُفۡلِحُ yuf'liḥu will be successful ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ l-ẓālimūna the wrongdoers
waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba biāyātihi innahu lā yuf'liḥu l-ẓālimūna
Who does more wrong than those who fabricate lies against Allah or deny His signs? Indeed, the wrongdoers will never succeed.
وَيَوۡمَ wayawma And (the) Day نَحۡشُرُهُمۡ naḥshuruhum We will gather them جَمِيعٗا jamīʿan all ثُمَّ thumma then نَقُولُ naqūlu We will say لِلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those who أَشۡرَكُوٓاْ ashrakū associated others with Allah أَيۡنَ ayna Where (are) شُرَكَآؤُكُمُ shurakāukumu your partners ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those whom كُنتُمۡ kuntum you used to تَزۡعُمُونَ tazʿumūna claim
wayawma naḥshuruhum jamīʿan thumma naqūlu lilladhīna ashrakū ayna shurakāukumu alladhīna kuntum tazʿumūna
˹Consider˺ the Day We will gather them all together then ask those who associated others ˹with Allah in worship˺, “Where are those gods you used to claim?”
ثُمَّ thumma Then لَمۡ lam not تَكُن takun will be فِتۡنَتُهُمۡ fit'natuhum (for) them a plea إِلَّآ illā except أَن an that قَالُواْ qālū they say وَٱللَّهِ wal-lahi By Allah رَبِّنَا rabbinā our Lord مَا mā not كُنَّا kunnā we were مُشۡرِكِينَ mush'rikīna those who associated others (with Allah)
thumma lam takun fit'natuhum illā an qālū wal-lahi rabbinā mā kunnā mush'rikīna
Their only argument will be: “By Allah, our Lord! We were never polytheists.”
ٱنظُرۡ unẓur Look كَيۡفَ kayfa how كَذَبُواْ kadhabū they lied عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā against أَنفُسِهِمۡۚ anfusihim themselves وَضَلَّ waḍalla And lost عَنۡهُم ʿanhum from them مَّا mā what كَانُواْ kānū they used to يَفۡتَرُونَ yaftarūna invent
unẓur kayfa kadhabū ʿalā anfusihim waḍalla ʿanhum mā kānū yaftarūna
See how they will lie about themselves and how those ˹gods˺ they fabricated will fail them!
وَمِنۡهُم wamin'hum And among them مَّن man (are those) who يَسۡتَمِعُ yastamiʿu listen إِلَيۡكَۖ ilayka to you وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā but We have placed عَلَىٰ ʿalā over قُلُوبِهِمۡ qulūbihim their hearts أَكِنَّةً akinnatan coverings أَن an lest يَفۡقَهُوهُ yafqahūhu they understand it وَفِيٓ wafī and in ءَاذَانِهِمۡ ādhānihim their ears وَقۡرٗاۚ waqran deafness وَإِن wa-in And if يَرَوۡاْ yaraw they see كُلَّ kulla every ءَايَةٖ āyatin sign لَّا lā not يُؤۡمِنُواْ yu'minū will they believe بِهَاۖ bihā in it حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā Until إِذَا idhā when جَآءُوكَ jāūka they come to you يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ yujādilūnaka and argue with you يَقُولُ yaqūlu say ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوٓاْ kafarū disbelieved إِنۡ in Not هَٰذَآ hādhā (is) this إِلَّآ illā but أَسَٰطِيرُ asāṭīru (the) tales ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)
wamin'hum man yastamiʿu ilayka wajaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wafī ādhānihim waqran wa-in yaraw kulla āyatin lā yu'minū bihā ḥattā idhā jāūka yujādilūnaka yaqūlu alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā asāṭīru l-awalīna
There are some of them who ˹pretend to˺ listen to your recitation ˹of the Quran˺, but We have cast veils over their hearts—leaving them unable to comprehend it—and deafness in their ears. Even if they were to see every sign, they still would not believe in them. The disbelievers would ˹even˺ come to argue with you, saying, “This ˹Quran˺ is nothing but ancient fables!”
وَهُمۡ wahum And they يَنۡهَوۡنَ yanhawna forbid (others) عَنۡهُ ʿanhu from it وَيَنۡـَٔوۡنَ wayanawna and they keep away عَنۡهُۖ ʿanhu from it وَإِن wa-in And not يُهۡلِكُونَ yuh'likūna they destroy إِلَّآ illā except أَنفُسَهُمۡ anfusahum themselves وَمَا wamā and not يَشۡعُرُونَ yashʿurūna they perceive
wahum yanhawna ʿanhu wayanawna ʿanhu wa-in yuh'likūna illā anfusahum wamā yashʿurūna
They turn others away from the Prophet and distance themselves as well. They ruin none but themselves, yet they fail to perceive it.
وَلَوۡ walaw And if تَرَىٰٓ tarā you (could) see إِذۡ idh when وُقِفُواْ wuqifū they are made to stand عَلَى ʿalā by ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri the Fire فَقَالُواْ faqālū then they (will) say يَٰلَيۡتَنَا yālaytanā Oh! Would that we نُرَدُّ nuraddu were sent back وَلَا walā and not نُكَذِّبَ nukadhiba we would deny بِـَٔايَٰتِ biāyāti (the) Signs رَبِّنَا rabbinā (of) our Lord وَنَكُونَ wanakūna and we would be مِنَ mina among ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ l-mu'minīna the believers
walaw tarā idh wuqifū ʿalā l-nāri faqālū yālaytanā nuraddu walā nukadhiba biāyāti rabbinā wanakūna mina l-mu'minīna
If only you could see when they will be detained before the Fire! They will cry, “Oh! If only we could be sent back, we would never deny the signs of our Lord and we would ˹surely˺ be of the believers.”
بَلۡ bal Nay بَدَا badā became manifest لَهُم lahum for them مَّا mā what كَانُواْ kānū they used to يُخۡفُونَ yukh'fūna conceal مِن min from قَبۡلُۖ qablu before وَلَوۡ walaw And if رُدُّواْ ruddū they were sent back لَعَادُواْ laʿādū certainly they (would) return لِمَا limā to what نُهُواْ nuhū they were forbidden عَنۡهُ ʿanhu from it وَإِنَّهُمۡ wa-innahum and indeed they لَكَٰذِبُونَ lakādhibūna certainly are liars
bal badā lahum mā kānū yukh'fūna min qablu walaw ruddū laʿādū limā nuhū ʿanhu wa-innahum lakādhibūna
But no! ˹They only say this˺ because the truth they used to hide will become all too clear to them. Even if they were to be sent back, they would certainly revert to what they were forbidden. Indeed they are liars!
وَقَالُوٓاْ waqālū And they said إِنۡ in Not هِيَ hiya it (is) إِلَّا illā except حَيَاتُنَا ḥayātunā our life ٱلدُّنۡيَا l-dun'yā (of) the world وَمَا wamā and not نَحۡنُ naḥnu we بِمَبۡعُوثِينَ bimabʿūthīna (will be) resurrected
waqālū in hiya illā ḥayātunā l-dun'yā wamā naḥnu bimabʿūthīna
They insisted, “There is nothing beyond this worldly life and we will never be resurrected.”
وَلَوۡ walaw And if تَرَىٰٓ tarā you (could) see إِذۡ idh when وُقِفُواْ wuqifū they will be made to stand عَلَىٰ ʿalā before رَبِّهِمۡۚ rabbihim their Lord قَالَ qāla He (will) say أَلَيۡسَ alaysa Is not هَٰذَا hādhā this بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ bil-ḥaqi the truth قَالُواْ qālū They will say بَلَىٰ balā Yes وَرَبِّنَاۚ warabbinā by our Lord قَالَ qāla He (will) say فَذُوقُواْ fadhūqū So taste ٱلۡعَذَابَ l-ʿadhāba the punishment بِمَا bimā because كُنتُمۡ kuntum you used to تَكۡفُرُونَ takfurūna disbelieve
walaw tarā idh wuqifū ʿalā rabbihim qāla alaysa hādhā bil-ḥaqi qālū balā warabbinā qāla fadhūqū l-ʿadhāba bimā kuntum takfurūna
But if only you could see when they will be detained before their Lord! He will ask ˹them˺, “Is this ˹Hereafter˺ not the truth?” They will cry, “Absolutely, by our Lord!” He will say, “Then taste the punishment for your disbelief.”
