بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
تَبَارَكَ tabāraka Blessed is He ٱلَّذِي alladhī Who نَزَّلَ nazzala sent down ٱلۡفُرۡقَانَ l-fur'qāna the Criterion عَلَىٰ ʿalā upon عَبۡدِهِۦ ʿabdihi His slave لِيَكُونَ liyakūna that he may be لِلۡعَٰلَمِينَ lil'ʿālamīna to the worlds نَذِيرًا nadhīran a warner
tabāraka alladhī nazzala l-fur'qāna ʿalā ʿabdihi liyakūna lil'ʿālamīna nadhīran
Blessed is the One Who sent down the Decisive Authority to His servant, so that he may be a warner to the whole world.
ٱلَّذِي alladhī The One Who لَهُۥ lahu to Him (belongs) مُلۡكُ mul'ku (the) dominion ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ wal-arḍi and the earth وَلَمۡ walam and not يَتَّخِذۡ yattakhidh He has taken وَلَدٗا waladan a son وَلَمۡ walam and not يَكُن yakun He has لَّهُۥ lahu for Him شَرِيكٞ sharīkun a partner فِي fī in ٱلۡمُلۡكِ l-mul'ki the dominion وَخَلَقَ wakhalaqa and He (has) created كُلَّ kulla every شَيۡءٖ shayin thing فَقَدَّرَهُۥ faqaddarahu and determined it تَقۡدِيرٗا taqdīran (with) determination
alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walam yattakhidh waladan walam yakun lahu sharīkun fī l-mul'ki wakhalaqa kulla shayin faqaddarahu taqdīran
˹Allah is˺ the One to Whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, Who has never had ˹any˺ offspring, nor does He have a partner in ˹governing˺ the kingdom. He has created everything, ordaining it precisely.
وَٱتَّخَذُواْ wa-ittakhadhū Yet they have taken مِن min besides Him دُونِهِۦٓ dūnihi besides Him ءَالِهَةٗ ālihatan gods لَّا lā not يَخۡلُقُونَ yakhluqūna they create شَيۡـٔٗا shayan anything وَهُمۡ wahum while they يُخۡلَقُونَ yukh'laqūna are created وَلَا walā and not يَمۡلِكُونَ yamlikūna they possess لِأَنفُسِهِمۡ li-anfusihim for themselves ضَرّٗا ḍarran any harm وَلَا walā and not نَفۡعٗا nafʿan any benefit وَلَا walā and not يَمۡلِكُونَ yamlikūna they control مَوۡتٗا mawtan death وَلَا walā and not حَيَوٰةٗ ḥayatan life وَلَا walā and not نُشُورٗا nushūran resurrection
wa-ittakhadhū min dūnihi ālihatan lā yakhluqūna shayan wahum yukh'laqūna walā yamlikūna li-anfusihim ḍarran walā nafʿan walā yamlikūna mawtan walā ḥayatan walā nushūran
Yet they have taken besides Him gods who cannot create anything but are themselves created. Nor can they protect or benefit themselves. Nor can they control life, death, or resurrection.
وَقَالَ waqāla And say ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوٓاْ kafarū disbelieve إِنۡ in Not هَٰذَآ hādhā this إِلَّآ illā (is) but إِفۡكٌ if'kun a lie ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ if'tarāhu he invented it وَأَعَانَهُۥ wa-aʿānahu and helped him عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi at it قَوۡمٌ qawmun people ءَاخَرُونَۖ ākharūna other فَقَدۡ faqad But verily جَآءُو jāū they (have) produced ظُلۡمٗا ẓul'man an injustice وَزُورٗا wazūran and a lie
waqāla alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā if'kun if'tarāhu wa-aʿānahu ʿalayhi qawmun ākharūna faqad jāū ẓul'man wazūran
The disbelievers say, “This ˹Quran˺ is nothing but a fabrication which he made up with the help of others.” Their claim is totally unjustified and untrue!
وَقَالُوٓاْ waqālū And they say أَسَٰطِيرُ asāṭīru Tales ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former people ٱكۡتَتَبَهَا ik'tatabahā which he has had written فَهِيَ fahiya and they تُمۡلَىٰ tum'lā are dictated عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi to him بُكۡرَةٗ buk'ratan morning وَأَصِيلٗا wa-aṣīlan and evening
waqālū asāṭīru l-awalīna ik'tatabahā fahiya tum'lā ʿalayhi buk'ratan wa-aṣīlan
And they say, “˹These revelations are only˺ ancient fables which he has had written down, and they are rehearsed to him morning and evening.”
قُلۡ qul Say أَنزَلَهُ anzalahu Has sent it down ٱلَّذِي alladhī the One Who يَعۡلَمُ yaʿlamu knows ٱلسِّرَّ l-sira the secret فِي fī in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ wal-arḍi and the earth إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He كَانَ kāna is غَفُورٗا ghafūran Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٗا raḥīman Most Merciful
qul anzalahu alladhī yaʿlamu l-sira fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi innahu kāna ghafūran raḥīman
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “This ˹Quran˺ has been revealed by the One Who knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth. Surely He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they say مَالِ māli Why does هَٰذَا hādhā this ٱلرَّسُولِ l-rasūli Messenger يَأۡكُلُ yakulu eat ٱلطَّعَامَ l-ṭaʿāma [the] food وَيَمۡشِي wayamshī and walk فِي fī in ٱلۡأَسۡوَاقِ l-aswāqi the markets لَوۡلَآ lawlā Why not أُنزِلَ unzila is sent down إِلَيۡهِ ilayhi to him مَلَكٞ malakun an Angel فَيَكُونَ fayakūna then he be مَعَهُۥ maʿahu with him نَذِيرًا nadhīran a warner
waqālū māli hādhā l-rasūli yakulu l-ṭaʿāma wayamshī fī l-aswāqi lawlā unzila ilayhi malakun fayakūna maʿahu nadhīran
And they say ˹mockingly˺, “What kind of messenger is this who eats food and goes about in market-places ˹for a living˺? If only an angel had been sent down with him to be his co-warner,
أَوۡ aw Or يُلۡقَىٰٓ yul'qā is delivered إِلَيۡهِ ilayhi to him كَنزٌ kanzun a treasure أَوۡ aw or تَكُونُ takūnu is لَهُۥ lahu for him جَنَّةٞ jannatun a garden يَأۡكُلُ yakulu he may eat مِنۡهَاۚ min'hā from it وَقَالَ waqāla And say ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ l-ẓālimūna the wrongdoers إِن in Not تَتَّبِعُونَ tattabiʿūna you follow إِلَّا illā but رَجُلٗا rajulan a man مَّسۡحُورًا masḥūran bewitched
aw yul'qā ilayhi kanzun aw takūnu lahu jannatun yakulu min'hā waqāla l-ẓālimūna in tattabiʿūna illā rajulan masḥūran
or a treasure had been cast down to him, or he had had a garden from which he may eat!” And the wrongdoers say ˹to the believers˺, “You are only following a bewitched man.”
ٱنظُرۡ unẓur See كَيۡفَ kayfa how ضَرَبُواْ ḍarabū they set forth لَكَ laka for you ٱلۡأَمۡثَٰلَ l-amthāla the similitudes فَضَلُّواْ faḍallū but they have gone astray فَلَا falā so not يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ yastaṭīʿūna they are able (to find) سَبِيلٗا sabīlan a way
unẓur kayfa ḍarabū laka l-amthāla faḍallū falā yastaṭīʿūna sabīlan
See ˹O Prophet˺ how they call you names! So they have gone so ˹far˺ astray that they cannot find the ˹Right˺ Way.
تَبَارَكَ tabāraka Blessed is He ٱلَّذِيٓ alladhī Who إِن in if شَآءَ shāa He willed جَعَلَ jaʿala (could have) made لَكَ laka for you خَيۡرٗا khayran better مِّن min than ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that جَنَّٰتٖ jannātin gardens تَجۡرِي tajrī flow مِن min from تَحۡتِهَا taḥtihā underneath it ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ l-anhāru the rivers وَيَجۡعَل wayajʿal and He (could) make لَّكَ laka for you قُصُورَۢا quṣūran palaces
tabāraka alladhī in shāa jaʿala laka khayran min dhālika jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru wayajʿal laka quṣūran
Blessed is the One Who—if He wills—can give you far better than ˹all˺ that: gardens under which rivers flow, and palaces as well.
بَلۡ bal Nay كَذَّبُواْ kadhabū they deny بِٱلسَّاعَةِۖ bil-sāʿati the Hour وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا wa-aʿtadnā and We have prepared لِمَن liman for (those) who كَذَّبَ kadhaba deny بِٱلسَّاعَةِ bil-sāʿati the Hour سَعِيرًا saʿīran a Blazing Fire
bal kadhabū bil-sāʿati wa-aʿtadnā liman kadhaba bil-sāʿati saʿīran
In fact, they deny the Hour. And for the deniers of the Hour, We have prepared a blazing Fire.
إِذَا idhā When رَأَتۡهُم ra-athum it sees them مِّن min from مَّكَانِۭ makānin a place بَعِيدٖ baʿīdin far سَمِعُواْ samiʿū they will hear لَهَا lahā its تَغَيُّظٗا taghayyuẓan raging وَزَفِيرٗا wazafīran and roaring
idhā ra-athum min makānin baʿīdin samiʿū lahā taghayyuẓan wazafīran
Once it sees them from a distance, they will hear it fuming and growling.
وَإِذَآ wa-idhā And when أُلۡقُواْ ul'qū they are thrown مِنۡهَا min'hā thereof مَكَانٗا makānan (in) a place ضَيِّقٗا ḍayyiqan narrow مُّقَرَّنِينَ muqarranīna bound in chains دَعَوۡاْ daʿaw they will call هُنَالِكَ hunālika there ثُبُورٗا thubūran (for) destruction
wa-idhā ul'qū min'hā makānan ḍayyiqan muqarranīna daʿaw hunālika thubūran
And when they are tossed into a narrow place inside ˹Hell˺, chained together, then and there they will cry out for ˹instant˺ destruction.
لَّا lā (Do) not تَدۡعُواْ tadʿū call ٱلۡيَوۡمَ l-yawma this day ثُبُورٗا thubūran (for) destruction وَٰحِدٗا wāḥidan one وَٱدۡعُواْ wa-id'ʿū but call ثُبُورٗا thubūran (for) destructions كَثِيرٗا kathīran many
lā tadʿū l-yawma thubūran wāḥidan wa-id'ʿū thubūran kathīran
˹They will be told,˺ “Do not cry only once for destruction Today, but cry many times over!”
قُلۡ qul Say أَذَٰلِكَ adhālika Is that خَيۡرٌ khayrun better أَمۡ am or جَنَّةُ jannatu Garden ٱلۡخُلۡدِ l-khul'di (of) Eternity ٱلَّتِي allatī which وُعِدَ wuʿida is promised ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۚ l-mutaqūna (to) the righteous كَانَتۡ kānat It will be لَهُمۡ lahum for them جَزَآءٗ jazāan a reward وَمَصِيرٗا wamaṣīran and destination
qul adhālika khayrun am jannatu l-khul'di allatī wuʿida l-mutaqūna kānat lahum jazāan wamaṣīran
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Is this better or the Garden of Eternity which the righteous have been promised, as a reward and ˹an ultimate˺ destination?
لَّهُمۡ lahum For them فِيهَا fīhā therein مَا mā (is) whatever يَشَآءُونَ yashāūna they wish خَٰلِدِينَۚ khālidīna they will abide forever كَانَ kāna It is عَلَىٰ ʿalā on رَبِّكَ rabbika your Lord وَعۡدٗا waʿdan a promise مَّسۡـُٔولٗا masūlan requested
lahum fīhā mā yashāūna khālidīna kāna ʿalā rabbika waʿdan masūlan
There they will have whatever they wish for, forever. That is a promise ˹to be sought after˺, binding on your Lord.”
وَيَوۡمَ wayawma And (the) Day يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ yaḥshuruhum He will gather them وَمَا wamā and what يَعۡبُدُونَ yaʿbudūna they worship مِن min besides Allah دُونِ dūni besides Allah ٱللَّهِ l-lahi besides Allah فَيَقُولُ fayaqūlu and He will say ءَأَنتُمۡ a-antum Did you أَضۡلَلۡتُمۡ aḍlaltum [you] mislead عِبَادِي ʿibādī My slaves هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ hāulāi these أَمۡ am or هُمۡ hum they ضَلُّواْ ḍallū went astray ٱلسَّبِيلَ l-sabīla (from) the way
wayawma yaḥshuruhum wamā yaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi fayaqūlu a-antum aḍlaltum ʿibādī hāulāi am hum ḍallū l-sabīla
˹Watch for˺ the Day He will gather them along with what they used to worship besides Allah, and ask ˹the objects of worship˺, “Was it you who misled these servants of Mine, or did they stray from the Way ˹on their own˺?”
قَالُواْ qālū They say سُبۡحَٰنَكَ sub'ḥānaka Glory be to You مَا mā Not كَانَ kāna it was proper يَنۢبَغِي yanbaghī it was proper لَنَآ lanā for us أَن an that نَّتَّخِذَ nattakhidha we take مِن min besides You دُونِكَ dūnika besides You مِنۡ min any أَوۡلِيَآءَ awliyāa protectors وَلَٰكِن walākin But مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ mattaʿtahum You gave them comforts وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ waābāahum and their forefathers حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until نَسُواْ nasū they forgot ٱلذِّكۡرَ l-dhik'ra the Message وَكَانُواْ wakānū and became قَوۡمَۢا qawman a people بُورٗا būran ruined
qālū sub'ḥānaka mā kāna yanbaghī lanā an nattakhidha min dūnika min awliyāa walākin mattaʿtahum waābāahum ḥattā nasū l-dhik'ra wakānū qawman būran
They will say, “Glory be to You! It was not right for ˹others like˺ us to take any lords besides You, but You allowed enjoyment for them and their forefathers ˹for so long˺ that they forgot ˹Your˺ remembrance and became a doomed people.”
فَقَدۡ faqad So verily كَذَّبُوكُم kadhabūkum they deny you بِمَا bimā in what تَقُولُونَ taqūlūna you say فَمَا famā so not تَسۡتَطِيعُونَ tastaṭīʿūna you are able صَرۡفٗا ṣarfan (to) avert وَلَا walā and not نَصۡرٗاۚ naṣran (to) help وَمَن waman And whoever يَظۡلِم yaẓlim does wrong مِّنكُمۡ minkum among you نُذِقۡهُ nudhiq'hu We will make him taste عَذَابٗا ʿadhāban a punishment كَبِيرٗا kabīran great
faqad kadhabūkum bimā taqūlūna famā tastaṭīʿūna ṣarfan walā naṣran waman yaẓlim minkum nudhiq'hu ʿadhāban kabīran
˹The doomed will be told˺, “Your gods have clearly denied your claims. So now you can neither ward off ˹the punishment˺ nor get any help.” And whoever of you does wrong, We will make them taste a horrible punishment.
وَمَآ wamā And not أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā We sent قَبۡلَكَ qablaka before you مِنَ mina any ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ l-mur'salīna Messengers إِلَّآ illā but إِنَّهُمۡ innahum indeed, they لَيَأۡكُلُونَ layakulūna [surely] ate ٱلطَّعَامَ l-ṭaʿāma food وَيَمۡشُونَ wayamshūna and walked فِي fī in ٱلۡأَسۡوَاقِۗ l-aswāqi the markets وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā And We have made بَعۡضَكُمۡ baʿḍakum some of you لِبَعۡضٖ libaʿḍin for others فِتۡنَةً fit'natan a trial أَتَصۡبِرُونَۗ ataṣbirūna will you have patience وَكَانَ wakāna And is رَبُّكَ rabbuka your Lord بَصِيرٗا baṣīran All-Seer
wamā arsalnā qablaka mina l-mur'salīna illā innahum layakulūna l-ṭaʿāma wayamshūna fī l-aswāqi wajaʿalnā baʿḍakum libaʿḍin fit'natan ataṣbirūna wakāna rabbuka baṣīran
We never sent any messenger before you ˹O Prophet˺, who did not eat food and go about in market-places. We have made some of you a trial for others. Will you ˹not then˺ be patient? And your Lord is All-Seeing.
۞ وَقَالَ waqāla And said ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who لَا lā (do) not يَرۡجُونَ yarjūna expect لِقَآءَنَا liqāanā (the) meeting with Us لَوۡلَآ lawlā Why not أُنزِلَ unzila are sent down عَلَيۡنَا ʿalaynā to us ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ l-malāikatu the Angels أَوۡ aw or نَرَىٰ narā we see رَبَّنَاۗ rabbanā our Lord لَقَدِ laqadi Indeed ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ is'takbarū they have become arrogant فِيٓ fī within أَنفُسِهِمۡ anfusihim themselves وَعَتَوۡ waʿataw and (become) insolent عُتُوّٗا ʿutuwwan (with) insolence كَبِيرٗا kabīran great
waqāla alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā lawlā unzila ʿalaynā l-malāikatu aw narā rabbanā laqadi is'takbarū fī anfusihim waʿataw ʿutuwwan kabīran
Those who do not expect to meet Us say, “If only the angels were sent down to us, or we could see our Lord!” They have certainly been carried away by their arrogance and have entirely exceeded all limits.
يَوۡمَ yawma (The) Day يَرَوۡنَ yarawna they see ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ l-malāikata the Angels لَا lā no بُشۡرَىٰ bush'rā glad tidings يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin (will be) that Day لِّلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ lil'muj'rimīna for the criminals وَيَقُولُونَ wayaqūlūna and they will say حِجۡرٗا ḥij'ran A partition مَّحۡجُورٗا maḥjūran forbidden
yawma yarawna l-malāikata lā bush'rā yawma-idhin lil'muj'rimīna wayaqūlūna ḥij'ran maḥjūran
˹But˺ on the Day they will see the angels, there will be no good news for the wicked, who will cry, “Keep away! Away ˹from us˺!”
وَقَدِمۡنَآ waqadim'nā And We will proceed إِلَىٰ ilā to مَا mā whatever عَمِلُواْ ʿamilū they did مِنۡ min of عَمَلٖ ʿamalin (the) deed(s) فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ fajaʿalnāhu and We will make them هَبَآءٗ habāan (as) dust مَّنثُورًا manthūran dispersed
waqadim'nā ilā mā ʿamilū min ʿamalin fajaʿalnāhu habāan manthūran
Then We will turn to whatever ˹good˺ deeds they did, reducing them to scattered dust.
أَصۡحَٰبُ aṣḥābu (The) companions ٱلۡجَنَّةِ l-janati (of) Paradise يَوۡمَئِذٍ yawma-idhin that Day خَيۡرٞ khayrun (will be in) a better مُّسۡتَقَرّٗا mus'taqarran abode وَأَحۡسَنُ wa-aḥsanu and a better مَقِيلٗا maqīlan resting-place
aṣḥābu l-janati yawma-idhin khayrun mus'taqarran wa-aḥsanu maqīlan
˹But˺ on that Day the residents of Paradise will have the best settlement and the finest place to rest.
وَيَوۡمَ wayawma And (the) Day تَشَقَّقُ tashaqqaqu will split open ٱلسَّمَآءُ l-samāu the heavens بِٱلۡغَمَٰمِ bil-ghamāmi with the clouds وَنُزِّلَ wanuzzila and (will be) sent down ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ l-malāikatu the Angels تَنزِيلًا tanzīlan descending
wayawma tashaqqaqu l-samāu bil-ghamāmi wanuzzila l-malāikatu tanzīlan
˹Watch for˺ the Day the heavens will burst with clouds, and the angels will be sent down in successive ranks.
ٱلۡمُلۡكُ al-mul'ku The Sovereignty يَوۡمَئِذٍ yawma-idhin that Day ٱلۡحَقُّ l-ḥaqu (will be) truly لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِۚ lilrraḥmāni for the Most Gracious وَكَانَ wakāna And (it will) be يَوۡمًا yawman a Day عَلَى ʿalā for ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna the disbelievers عَسِيرٗا ʿasīran difficult
al-mul'ku yawma-idhin l-ḥaqu lilrraḥmāni wakāna yawman ʿalā l-kāfirīna ʿasīran
True authority on that Day will belong ˹only˺ to the Most Compassionate. And it will be a hard day for the disbelievers.
وَيَوۡمَ wayawma And (the) Day يَعَضُّ yaʿaḍḍu will bite ٱلظَّالِمُ l-ẓālimu the wrongdoer عَلَىٰ ʿalā [on] يَدَيۡهِ yadayhi his hands يَقُولُ yaqūlu he will say يَٰلَيۡتَنِي yālaytanī O I wish ٱتَّخَذۡتُ ittakhadhtu I had taken مَعَ maʿa with ٱلرَّسُولِ l-rasūli the Messenger سَبِيلٗا sabīlan a way
wayawma yaʿaḍḍu l-ẓālimu ʿalā yadayhi yaqūlu yālaytanī ittakhadhtu maʿa l-rasūli sabīlan
And ˹beware of˺ the Day the wrongdoer will bite his nails ˹in regret˺ and say, “Oh! I wish I had followed the Way along with the Messenger!
يَٰوَيۡلَتَىٰ yāwaylatā O woe to me لَيۡتَنِي laytanī I wish لَمۡ lam not أَتَّخِذۡ attakhidh I had taken فُلَانًا fulānan that one خَلِيلٗا khalīlan (as) a friend
yāwaylatā laytanī lam attakhidh fulānan khalīlan
Woe to me! I wish I had never taken so-and-so as a close friend.
لَّقَدۡ laqad Verily أَضَلَّنِي aḍallanī he led me astray عَنِ ʿani from ٱلذِّكۡرِ l-dhik'ri the Reminder بَعۡدَ baʿda after إِذۡ idh [when] جَآءَنِيۗ jāanī it (had) come to me وَكَانَ wakāna And is ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan لِلۡإِنسَٰنِ lil'insāni to the man خَذُولٗا khadhūlan a deserter
laqad aḍallanī ʿani l-dhik'ri baʿda idh jāanī wakāna l-shayṭānu lil'insāni khadhūlan
It was he who truly made me stray from the Reminder after it had reached me.” And Satan has always betrayed humanity.
وَقَالَ waqāla And said ٱلرَّسُولُ l-rasūlu the Messenger يَٰرَبِّ yārabbi O my Lord إِنَّ inna Indeed قَوۡمِي qawmī my people ٱتَّخَذُواْ ittakhadhū took هَٰذَا hādhā this ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ l-qur'āna the Quran مَهۡجُورٗا mahjūran (as) a forsaken thing
waqāla l-rasūlu yārabbi inna qawmī ittakhadhū hādhā l-qur'āna mahjūran
The Messenger has cried, “O my Lord! My people have indeed received this Quran with neglect.”
