ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveوَصَدُّواْwaṣaddūand turn awayعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) way of Allahٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) way of AllahأَضَلَّaḍallaHe will cause to be lostأَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds

alladhīna kafarū waṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi aḍalla aʿmālahum

Those who disbelieve and hinder ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah, He will render their deeds void.

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveوَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand doٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deedsوَءَامَنُواْwaāmanūand believeبِمَاbimāin whatنُزِّلَnuzzilais revealedعَلَىٰʿalātoمُحَمَّدٖmuḥammadinMuhammadوَهُوَwahuwaand itٱلۡحَقُّl-ḥaqu(is) the truthمِنminfromرَّبِّهِمۡrabbihimtheir LordكَفَّرَkaffaraHe will removeعَنۡهُمۡʿanhumfrom themسَيِّـَٔاتِهِمۡsayyiātihimtheir misdeedsوَأَصۡلَحَwa-aṣlaḥaand improveبَالَهُمۡbālahumtheir condition

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti waāmanū bimā nuzzila ʿalā muḥammadin wahuwa l-ḥaqu min rabbihim kaffara ʿanhum sayyiātihim wa-aṣlaḥa bālahum

As for those who believe, do good, and have faith in what has been revealed to Muḥammad—which is the truth from their Lord—He will absolve them of their sins and improve their condition.

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّbi-anna(is) becauseٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveٱتَّبَعُواْittabaʿūfollowٱلۡبَٰطِلَl-bāṭilafalsehoodوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveٱتَّبَعُواْittabaʿūfollowٱلۡحَقَّl-ḥaqa(the) truthمِنminfromرَّبِّهِمۡۚrabbihimtheir LordكَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusيَضۡرِبُyaḍribuAllah presentsٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah presentsلِلنَّاسِlilnnāsito the peopleأَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡamthālahumtheir similitudes

dhālika bi-anna alladhīna kafarū ittabaʿū l-bāṭila wa-anna alladhīna āmanū ittabaʿū l-ḥaqa min rabbihim kadhālika yaḍribu l-lahu lilnnāsi amthālahum

This is because the disbelievers follow falsehood, while the believers follow the truth from their Lord. This is how Allah shows people their true state ˹of faith˺.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo whenلَقِيتُمُlaqītumuyou meetٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveفَضَرۡبَfaḍarbathen strikeٱلرِّقَابِl-riqābithe necksحَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntilإِذَآidhāwhenأَثۡخَنتُمُوهُمۡathkhantumūhumyou have subdued themفَشُدُّواْfashuddūthen bind firmlyٱلۡوَثَاقَl-wathāqathe bondفَإِمَّاfa-immāthen eitherمَنَّۢاmannana favorبَعۡدُbaʿduafterwardsوَإِمَّاwa-immāorفِدَآءًfidāanransomحَتَّىٰḥattāuntilتَضَعَtaḍaʿalays downٱلۡحَرۡبُl-ḥarbuthe warأَوۡزَارَهَاۚawzārahāits burdensذَٰلِكَۖdhālikaThatوَلَوۡwalawAnd ifيَشَآءُyashāuAllah had willedٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah had willedلَٱنتَصَرَla-intaṣarasurely, He could have taken retributionمِنۡهُمۡmin'humfrom themوَلَٰكِنwalākinbutلِّيَبۡلُوَاْliyabluwāto testبَعۡضَكُمbaʿḍakumsome of youبِبَعۡضٖۗbibaʿḍinwith othersوَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoقُتِلُواْqutilūare killedفِيfīinسَبِيلِsabīli(the) way of Allahٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) way of Allahفَلَنfalanthen neverيُضِلَّyuḍillaHe will cause to be lostأَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds

fa-idhā laqītumu alladhīna kafarū faḍarba l-riqābi ḥattā idhā athkhantumūhum fashuddū l-wathāqa fa-immā mannan baʿdu wa-immā fidāan ḥattā taḍaʿa l-ḥarbu awzārahā dhālika walaw yashāu l-lahu la-intaṣara min'hum walākin liyabluwā baʿḍakum bibaʿḍin wa-alladhīna qutilū fī sabīli l-lahi falan yuḍilla aʿmālahum

So when you meet the disbelievers ˹in battle˺, strike ˹their˺ necks until you have thoroughly subdued them, then bind them firmly. Later ˹free them either as˺ an act of grace or by ransom until the war comes to an end. So will it be. Had Allah willed, He ˹Himself˺ could have inflicted punishment on them. But He does ˹this only to˺ test some of you by means of others. And those who are martyred in the cause of Allah, He will never render their deeds void.

سَيَهۡدِيهِمۡsayahdīhimHe will guide themوَيُصۡلِحُwayuṣ'liḥuand improveبَالَهُمۡbālahumtheir condition

sayahdīhim wayuṣ'liḥu bālahum

He will guide them ˹to their reward˺, improve their condition,

وَيُدۡخِلُهُمُwayud'khiluhumuAnd admit themٱلۡجَنَّةَl-janata(to) ParadiseعَرَّفَهَاʿarrafahāHe has made it knownلَهُمۡlahumto them

wayud'khiluhumu l-janata ʿarrafahā lahum

and admit them into Paradise, having made it known to them.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO you who believeٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaO you who believeءَامَنُوٓاْāmanūO you who believeإِنinIfتَنصُرُواْtanṣurūyou helpٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَنصُرۡكُمۡyanṣur'kumHe will help youوَيُثَبِّتۡwayuthabbitand make firmأَقۡدَامَكُمۡaqdāmakumyour feet

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū in tanṣurū l-laha yanṣur'kum wayuthabbit aqdāmakum

O believers! If you stand up for Allah, He will help you and make your steps firm.

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaBut those whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveفَتَعۡسٗاfataʿsandestruction (is)لَّهُمۡlahumfor themوَأَضَلَّwa-aḍallaand He will cause to be lostأَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds

wa-alladhīna kafarū fataʿsan lahum wa-aḍalla aʿmālahum

As for the disbelievers, may they be doomed and may He render their deeds void.

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّهُمۡbi-annahum(is) because theyكَرِهُواْkarihūhateمَآmāwhatأَنزَلَanzalaAllah has revealedٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has revealedفَأَحۡبَطَfa-aḥbaṭaso He has made worthlessأَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds

dhālika bi-annahum karihū mā anzala l-lahu fa-aḥbaṭa aʿmālahum

That is because they detest what Allah has revealed, so He has rendered their deeds void.

۞ أَفَلَمۡafalamDo notيَسِيرُواْyasīrūthey travelفِيfīinٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earthفَيَنظُرُواْfayanẓurūand seeكَيۡفَkayfahowكَانَkānawasعَٰقِبَةُʿāqibatu(the) endٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) thoseمِنminbefore themقَبۡلِهِمۡۖqablihimbefore themدَمَّرَdammaraAllah destroyedٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah destroyedعَلَيۡهِمۡۖʿalayhim[over] themوَلِلۡكَٰفِرِينَwalil'kāfirīnaand for the disbelieversأَمۡثَٰلُهَاamthāluhāits likeness

afalam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fayanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna min qablihim dammara l-lahu ʿalayhim walil'kāfirīna amthāluhā

Have they not travelled throughout the land to see what was the end of those before them? Allah annihilated them, and a similar fate awaits the disbelievers.

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّbi-anna(is) becauseٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahمَوۡلَىmawlā(is the) Protectorٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveوَأَنَّwa-annaand thatٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīnathe disbelievers لَاlā(there is) noمَوۡلَىٰmawlāprotectorلَهُمۡlahumfor them

dhālika bi-anna l-laha mawlā alladhīna āmanū wa-anna l-kāfirīna lā mawlā lahum

This is because Allah is the Patron of the believers while the disbelievers have no patron.

إِنَّinnaIndeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahيُدۡخِلُyud'khiluwill admitٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveوَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand doٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deedsجَنَّٰتٖjannātin(to) Gardensتَجۡرِيtajrīflowمِنminfromتَحۡتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath itٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۖl-anhāruthe riversوَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnabut those whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveيَتَمَتَّعُونَyatamattaʿūnathey enjoyوَيَأۡكُلُونَwayakulūnaand eatكَمَاkamāasتَأۡكُلُtakulueatٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمُl-anʿāmuthe cattleوَٱلنَّارُwal-nāruand the Fireمَثۡوٗىmathwan(will be) an abodeلَّهُمۡlahumfor them

inna l-laha yud'khilu alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru wa-alladhīna kafarū yatamattaʿūna wayakulūna kamā takulu l-anʿāmu wal-nāru mathwan lahum

Surely Allah will admit those who believe and do good into Gardens under which rivers flow. As for the disbelievers, they enjoy themselves and feed like cattle. But the Fire will be their home.

وَكَأَيِّنwaka-ayyinAnd how manyمِّنminofقَرۡيَةٍqaryatina townهِيَhiyawhichأَشَدُّashaddu(was) strongerقُوَّةٗquwwatan(in) strengthمِّنminthanقَرۡيَتِكَqaryatikayour townٱلَّتِيٓallatīwhichأَخۡرَجَتۡكَakhrajatkahas driven you outأَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُمۡahlaknāhumWe destroyed themفَلَاfalāso noنَاصِرَnāṣirahelperلَهُمۡlahumfor them

waka-ayyin min qaryatin hiya ashaddu quwwatan min qaryatika allatī akhrajatka ahlaknāhum falā nāṣira lahum

˹Imagine, O Prophet,˺ how many societies We destroyed that were far superior in might than your society—which drove you out—and there was none to help them!

أَفَمَنafamanThen is (he) whoكَانَkānaisعَلَىٰʿalāonبَيِّنَةٖbayyinatina clear proofمِّنminfromرَّبِّهِۦrabbihihis Lordكَمَنkamanlike (he) whoزُيِّنَzuyyinais made attractiveلَهُۥlahuto himسُوٓءُsūu(the) evilعَمَلِهِۦʿamalihi(of) his deedsوَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْwa-ittabaʿūwhile they followأَهۡوَآءَهُمahwāahumtheir desires

afaman kāna ʿalā bayyinatin min rabbihi kaman zuyyina lahu sūu ʿamalihi wa-ittabaʿū ahwāahum

Can those ˹believers˺ who stand on clear proof from their Lord be like those whose evil deeds are made appealing to them and ˹only˺ follow their desires?

مَّثَلُmathaluA parableٱلۡجَنَّةِl-janati(of) Paradiseٱلَّتِيallatīwhichوُعِدَwuʿidais promisedٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۖl-mutaqūna(to) the righteousفِيهَآfīhāThereinأَنۡهَٰرٞanhārun(are) riversمِّنminofمَّآءٍmāinwaterغَيۡرِghayrinotءَاسِنٖāsininpollutedوَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand riversمِّنminofلَّبَنٖlabaninmilkلَّمۡlamnotيَتَغَيَّرۡyataghayyarchangesطَعۡمُهُۥṭaʿmuhuits tasteوَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand riversمِّنۡminofخَمۡرٖkhamrinwineلَّذَّةٖladhatindeliciousلِّلشَّٰرِبِينَlilshāribīnafor (the) drinkersوَأَنۡهَٰرٞwa-anhārunand riversمِّنۡminofعَسَلٖʿasalinhoneyمُّصَفّٗىۖmuṣaffanpurifiedوَلَهُمۡwalahumand for themفِيهَاfīhāthereinمِنminofكُلِّkulliallٱلثَّمَرَٰتِl-thamarātifruitsوَمَغۡفِرَةٞwamaghfiratunand forgivenessمِّنminfromرَّبِّهِمۡۖrabbihimtheir Lordكَمَنۡkamanlike he whoهُوَhuwalike he whoخَٰلِدٞkhālidun(will) abide foreverفِيfīinٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fireوَسُقُواْwasuqūand they will be given to drinkمَآءًmāanwaterحَمِيمٗاḥamīmanboilingفَقَطَّعَfaqaṭṭaʿaso it cuts into piecesأَمۡعَآءَهُمۡamʿāahumtheir intestines

mathalu l-janati allatī wuʿida l-mutaqūna fīhā anhārun min māin ghayri āsinin wa-anhārun min labanin lam yataghayyar ṭaʿmuhu wa-anhārun min khamrin ladhatin lilshāribīna wa-anhārun min ʿasalin muṣaffan walahum fīhā min kulli l-thamarāti wamaghfiratun min rabbihim kaman huwa khālidun fī l-nāri wasuqū māan ḥamīman faqaṭṭaʿa amʿāahum

The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never changes in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will ˹also˺ have all kinds of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. ˹Can they be˺ like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides?

وَمِنۡهُمwamin'humAnd among themمَّنman(are some) whoيَسۡتَمِعُyastamiʿulistenإِلَيۡكَilaykato youحَتَّىٰٓḥattāuntilإِذَاidhāwhenخَرَجُواْkharajūthey departمِنۡminfromعِندِكَʿindikayouقَالُواْqālūthey sayلِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those whoأُوتُواْūtūwere givenٱلۡعِلۡمَl-ʿil'mathe knowledgeمَاذَاmādhāWhatقَالَqāla(has) he saidءَانِفًاۚānifanjust nowأُوْلَٰٓئِكَulāikaThose ٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the onesطَبَعَṭabaʿaAllah has set a sealٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has set a sealعَلَىٰʿalāuponقُلُوبِهِمۡqulūbihimtheir heartsوَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْwa-ittabaʿūand they followأَهۡوَآءَهُمۡahwāahumtheir desires

wamin'hum man yastamiʿu ilayka ḥattā idhā kharajū min ʿindika qālū lilladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma mādhā qāla ānifan ulāika alladhīna ṭabaʿa l-lahu ʿalā qulūbihim wa-ittabaʿū ahwāahum

There are some of them who listen to you ˹O Prophet˺, but when they depart from you, they say ˹mockingly˺ to those ˹believers˺ gifted with knowledge, “What did he just say?” These are the ones whose hearts Allah has sealed and who ˹only˺ follow their desires.

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoٱهۡتَدَوۡاْih'tadawaccept guidanceزَادَهُمۡzādahumHe increases themهُدٗىhudan(in) guidanceوَءَاتَىٰهُمۡwaātāhumand gives themتَقۡوَىٰهُمۡtaqwāhumtheir righteousness

wa-alladhīna ih'tadaw zādahum hudan waātāhum taqwāhum

As for those who are ˹rightly˺ guided, He increases them in guidance and blesses them with righteousness.

فَهَلۡfahalThen doيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnathey waitإِلَّاillābutٱلسَّاعَةَl-sāʿata(for) the Hourأَنanthatتَأۡتِيَهُمtatiyahumit should come to themبَغۡتَةٗۖbaghtatansuddenlyفَقَدۡfaqadBut indeedجَآءَjāahave comeأَشۡرَاطُهَاۚashrāṭuhāits indicationsفَأَنَّىٰfa-annāThen howلَهُمۡlahumto themإِذَاidhāwhenجَآءَتۡهُمۡjāathumhas come to themذِكۡرَىٰهُمۡdhik'rāhumtheir reminder

fahal yanẓurūna illā l-sāʿata an tatiyahum baghtatan faqad jāa ashrāṭuhā fa-annā lahum idhā jāathum dhik'rāhum

Are they only waiting for the Hour to take them by surprise? Yet ˹some of˺ its signs have already come. Once it actually befalls them, will it not be too late to be mindful?

فَٱعۡلَمۡfa-iʿ'lamSo knowأَنَّهُۥannahuthat [He] لَآlā(there is) noإِلَٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillābutٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahوَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡwa-is'taghfirand ask forgivenessلِذَنۢبِكَlidhanbikafor your sinوَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَwalil'mu'minīnaand for the believing menوَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۗwal-mu'minātiand the believing womenوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahيَعۡلَمُyaʿlamuknowsمُتَقَلَّبَكُمۡmutaqallabakumyour movementوَمَثۡوَىٰكُمۡwamathwākumand your resting places

fa-iʿ'lam annahu lā ilāha illā l-lahu wa-is'taghfir lidhanbika walil'mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti wal-lahu yaʿlamu mutaqallabakum wamathwākum

So, know ˹well, O Prophet,˺ that there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Allah. And seek forgiveness for your shortcomings and for ˹the sins of˺ the believing men and women. For Allah ˹fully˺ knows your movements and places of rest ˹O people˺.

وَيَقُولُwayaqūluAnd sayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveلَوۡلَاlawlāWhy notنُزِّلَتۡnuzzilathas been revealedسُورَةٞۖsūratuna Surahفَإِذَآfa-idhāBut whenأُنزِلَتۡunzilatis revealedسُورَةٞsūratuna Surahمُّحۡكَمَةٞmuḥ'kamatunpreciseوَذُكِرَwadhukiraand is mentionedفِيهَاfīhāin itٱلۡقِتَالُl-qitāluthe fightingرَأَيۡتَra-aytayou seeٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoفِيfīinقُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir heartsمَّرَضٞmaraḍun(is) a diseaseيَنظُرُونَyanẓurūnalookingإِلَيۡكَilaykaat you نَظَرَnaẓaraa lookٱلۡمَغۡشِيِّl-maghshiyi(of) one faintingعَلَيۡهِʿalayhi(of) one faintingمِنَminafromٱلۡمَوۡتِۖl-mawtithe deathفَأَوۡلَىٰfa-awlāBut more appropriateلَهُمۡlahumfor them

wayaqūlu alladhīna āmanū lawlā nuzzilat sūratun fa-idhā unzilat sūratun muḥ'kamatun wadhukira fīhā l-qitālu ra-ayta alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun yanẓurūna ilayka naẓara l-maghshiyi ʿalayhi mina l-mawti fa-awlā lahum

And the believers say, “If only a sûrah was revealed ˹allowing self-defence˺!” Yet when a precise sûrah is revealed, in which fighting is ˹explicitly˺ mentioned, you see those with sickness in their hearts staring at you like someone in the throes of death. It would have been better for them

طَاعَةٞṭāʿatun(Is) obedienceوَقَوۡلٞwaqawlunand a wordمَّعۡرُوفٞۚmaʿrūfunkindفَإِذَاfa-idhāAnd whenعَزَمَʿazama(is) determinedٱلۡأَمۡرُl-amruthe matterفَلَوۡfalawthen ifصَدَقُواْṣadaqūthey had been trueٱللَّهَl-laha(to) Allahلَكَانَlakānasurely, it would have beenخَيۡرٗاkhayranbetterلَّهُمۡlahumfor them

ṭāʿatun waqawlun maʿrūfun fa-idhā ʿazama l-amru falaw ṣadaqū l-laha lakāna khayran lahum

to obey and speak rightly. Then when fighting was ordained, it surely would have been better for them if they were true to Allah.

فَهَلۡfahalThen wouldعَسَيۡتُمۡʿasaytumyou perhapsإِنinifتَوَلَّيۡتُمۡtawallaytumyou are given authorityأَنanthatتُفۡسِدُواْtuf'sidūyou cause corruptionفِيfīinٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earthوَتُقَطِّعُوٓاْwatuqaṭṭiʿūand cut offأَرۡحَامَكُمۡarḥāmakumyour ties of kinship

fahal ʿasaytum in tawallaytum an tuf'sidū fī l-arḍi watuqaṭṭiʿū arḥāmakum

Now if you ˹hypocrites˺ turn away, perhaps you would then spread corruption throughout the land and sever your ˹ties of˺ kinship!

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَulāikaThoseٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(are) the onesلَعَنَهُمُlaʿanahumuAllah has cursed themٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has cursed themفَأَصَمَّهُمۡfa-aṣammahumso He made them deafوَأَعۡمَىٰٓwa-aʿmāand blindedأَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡabṣārahumtheir vision

ulāika alladhīna laʿanahumu l-lahu fa-aṣammahum wa-aʿmā abṣārahum

These are the ones who Allah has condemned, deafening them and blinding their eyes.

أَفَلَاafalāThen do notيَتَدَبَّرُونَyatadabbarūnathey ponderٱلۡقُرۡءَانَl-qur'āna(over) the Quranأَمۡamorعَلَىٰʿalāuponقُلُوبٍqulūbin(their) heartsأَقۡفَالُهَآaqfāluhā(are) locks

afalā yatadabbarūna l-qur'āna am ʿalā qulūbin aqfāluhā

Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Or are there locks upon their hearts?

إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoٱرۡتَدُّواْir'taddūreturnعَلَىٰٓʿalāonأَدۡبَٰرِهِمadbārihimtheir backsمِّنۢminafterبَعۡدِbaʿdiafterمَاmāwhatتَبَيَّنَtabayyana(has) become clearلَهُمُlahumuto themٱلۡهُدَىl-hudā(of) the guidanceٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُl-shayṭānuShaitaanسَوَّلَsawwalaenticedلَهُمۡlahum[for] themوَأَمۡلَىٰwa-amlāand prolonged hopeلَهُمۡlahumfor them

inna alladhīna ir'taddū ʿalā adbārihim min baʿdi mā tabayyana lahumu l-hudā l-shayṭānu sawwala lahum wa-amlā lahum

Indeed, those who relapse ˹into disbelief˺ after ˹true˺ guidance has become clear to them, ˹it is˺ Satan ˹that˺ has tempted them, luring them with false hopes.

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّهُمۡbi-annahum(is) because theyقَالُواْqālū[they] saidلِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those whoكَرِهُواْkarihūhateمَاmāwhatنَزَّلَnazzalaAllah has revealedٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah has revealedسَنُطِيعُكُمۡsanuṭīʿukumWe will obey youفِيfīinبَعۡضِbaʿḍipartٱلۡأَمۡرِۖl-amri(of) the matterوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuBut Allahيَعۡلَمُyaʿlamuknowsإِسۡرَارَهُمۡis'rārahumtheir secrets

dhālika bi-annahum qālū lilladhīna karihū mā nazzala l-lahu sanuṭīʿukum fī baʿḍi l-amri wal-lahu yaʿlamu is'rārahum

That is because they said ˹privately˺ to those who ˹also˺ detest what Allah has revealed, “We will obey you in some matters.” But Allah ˹fully˺ knows what they are hiding.

فَكَيۡفَfakayfaThen howإِذَاidhāwhenتَوَفَّتۡهُمُtawaffathumutake them in deathٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angelsيَضۡرِبُونَyaḍribūnastrikingوُجُوهَهُمۡwujūhahumtheir facesوَأَدۡبَٰرَهُمۡwa-adbārahumand their backs

fakayfa idhā tawaffathumu l-malāikatu yaḍribūna wujūhahum wa-adbārahum

Then how ˹horrible˺ will it be when the angels take their souls, beating their faces and backs!

ذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatبِأَنَّهُمُbi-annahumu(is) because theyٱتَّبَعُواْittabaʿūfollowedمَآmāwhatأَسۡخَطَaskhaṭaangeredٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahوَكَرِهُواْwakarihūand hatedرِضۡوَٰنَهُۥriḍ'wānahuHis pleasureفَأَحۡبَطَfa-aḥbaṭaso He made worthlessأَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡaʿmālahumtheir deeds

dhālika bi-annahumu ittabaʿū mā askhaṭa l-laha wakarihū riḍ'wānahu fa-aḥbaṭa aʿmālahum

This is because they follow whatever displeases Allah and hate whatever pleases Him, so He has rendered their deeds void.

أَمۡamOr doحَسِبَḥasibathinkٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoفِيfīinقُلُوبِهِمqulūbihimtheir heartsمَّرَضٌmaraḍun(is) a diseaseأَنanthatلَّنlanneverيُخۡرِجَyukh'rijawill Allah bring forthٱللَّهُl-lahuwill Allah bring forthأَضۡغَٰنَهُمۡaḍghānahumtheir hatred

am ḥasiba alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun an lan yukh'rija l-lahu aḍghānahum

Or do those with sickness in their hearts think that Allah will not ˹be able to˺ expose their malice?

وَلَوۡwalawAnd ifنَشَآءُnashāuWe willedلَأَرَيۡنَٰكَهُمۡla-araynākahumsurely, We could show them to youفَلَعَرَفۡتَهُمfalaʿaraftahumand you would know themبِسِيمَٰهُمۡۚbisīmāhumby their marksوَلَتَعۡرِفَنَّهُمۡwalataʿrifannahumbut surely, you will know themفِيfībyلَحۡنِlaḥni(the) toneٱلۡقَوۡلِۚl-qawli(of their) speechوَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahيَعۡلَمُyaʿlamuknowsأَعۡمَٰلَكُمۡaʿmālakumyour deeds

walaw nashāu la-araynākahum falaʿaraftahum bisīmāhum walataʿrifannahum fī laḥni l-qawli wal-lahu yaʿlamu aʿmālakum

Had We willed, We could have truly shown them to you ˹O Prophet˺, and you would have certainly recognized them by their appearance. But you will surely recognize them by their tone of speech. And Allah ˹fully˺ knows your doings ˹O people˺.
