صٓۚ sad Saad وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ wal-qur'āni By the Quran ذِي dhī full (of) reminder ٱلذِّكۡرِ l-dhik'ri full (of) reminder
sad wal-qur'āni dhī l-dhik'ri
Ṣãd. By the Quran, full of reminders!
بَلِ bali Nay ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُواْ kafarū disbelieve فِي fī (are) in عِزَّةٖ ʿizzatin self-glory وَشِقَاقٖ washiqāqin and opposition
bali alladhīna kafarū fī ʿizzatin washiqāqin
˹This is the truth,˺ yet the disbelievers are ˹entrenched˺ in arrogance and opposition.
كَمۡ kam How many أَهۡلَكۡنَا ahlaknā We destroyed مِن min before them قَبۡلِهِم qablihim before them مِّن min of قَرۡنٖ qarnin a generation فَنَادَواْ fanādaw then they called out وَّلَاتَ walāta when there (was) no longer حِينَ ḥīna time مَنَاصٖ manāṣin (for) escape
kam ahlaknā min qablihim min qarnin fanādaw walāta ḥīna manāṣin
˹Imagine˺ how many peoples We destroyed before them, and they cried out when it was too late to escape.
وَعَجِبُوٓاْ waʿajibū And they wonder أَن an that جَآءَهُم jāahum has come to them مُّنذِرٞ mundhirun a warner مِّنۡهُمۡۖ min'hum from themselves وَقَالَ waqāla And said ٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ l-kāfirūna the disbelievers هَٰذَا hādhā This سَٰحِرٞ sāḥirun (is) a magician كَذَّابٌ kadhābun a liar
waʿajibū an jāahum mundhirun min'hum waqāla l-kāfirūna hādhā sāḥirun kadhābun
Now, the pagans are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, “This is a magician, a total liar!
أَجَعَلَ ajaʿala Has he made ٱلۡأٓلِهَةَ l-ālihata the gods إِلَٰهٗا ilāhan (into) one god وَٰحِدًاۖ wāḥidan (into) one god إِنَّ inna Indeed هَٰذَا hādhā this لَشَيۡءٌ lashayon (is) certainly a thing عُجَابٞ ʿujābun curious
ajaʿala l-ālihata ilāhan wāḥidan inna hādhā lashayon ʿujābun
Has he reduced ˹all˺ the gods to One God? Indeed, this is something totally astonishing.”
وَٱنطَلَقَ wa-inṭalaqa And went forth ٱلۡمَلَأُ l-mala-u the chiefs مِنۡهُمۡ min'hum among them أَنِ ani that ٱمۡشُواْ im'shū Continue وَٱصۡبِرُواْ wa-iṣ'birū and be patient عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā over ءَالِهَتِكُمۡۖ ālihatikum your gods إِنَّ inna Indeed هَٰذَا hādhā this لَشَيۡءٞ lashayon (is) certainly a thing يُرَادُ yurādu intended
wa-inṭalaqa l-mala-u min'hum ani im'shū wa-iṣ'birū ʿalā ālihatikum inna hādhā lashayon yurādu
The chiefs among them went forth saying, “Carry on, and stand firm in devotion to your gods. Certainly this is just a scheme ˹for power˺.
مَا mā Not سَمِعۡنَا samiʿ'nā we heard بِهَٰذَا bihādhā of this فِي fī in ٱلۡمِلَّةِ l-milati the religion ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ l-ākhirati the last إِنۡ in Not هَٰذَآ hādhā (is) this إِلَّا illā but ٱخۡتِلَٰقٌ ikh'tilāqun a fabrication
mā samiʿ'nā bihādhā fī l-milati l-ākhirati in hādhā illā ikh'tilāqun
We have never heard of this in the previous faith. This is nothing but a fabrication.
أَءُنزِلَ a-unzila Has been revealed عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi to him ٱلذِّكۡرُ l-dhik'ru the Message مِنۢ min from بَيۡنِنَاۚ bayninā among us بَلۡ bal Nay هُمۡ hum They فِي fī (are) in شَكّٖ shakkin doubt مِّن min about ذِكۡرِيۚ dhik'rī My Message بَل bal Nay لَّمَّا lammā not yet يَذُوقُواْ yadhūqū they have tasted عَذَابِ ʿadhābi My punishment
a-unzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru min bayninā bal hum fī shakkin min dhik'rī bal lammā yadhūqū ʿadhābi
Has the Reminder been revealed ˹only˺ to him out of ˹all of˺ us?” In fact, they are ˹only˺ in doubt of My ˹revealed˺ Reminder. In fact, ˹they do so because˺ they have not yet tasted My punishment.
أَمۡ am Or عِندَهُمۡ ʿindahum have they خَزَآئِنُ khazāinu (the) treasures رَحۡمَةِ raḥmati (of the) Mercy رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord ٱلۡعَزِيزِ l-ʿazīzi the All-Mighty ٱلۡوَهَّابِ l-wahābi the Bestower
am ʿindahum khazāinu raḥmati rabbika l-ʿazīzi l-wahābi
Or ˹is it because˺ they possess the treasuries of the mercy of your Lord—the Almighty, the Giver ˹of all bounties˺.
أَمۡ am Or لَهُم lahum for them مُّلۡكُ mul'ku (is the) dominion ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ wal-arḍi and the earth وَمَا wamā and whatever بَيۡنَهُمَاۖ baynahumā (is) between them فَلۡيَرۡتَقُواْ falyartaqū Then let them ascend فِي fī by ٱلۡأَسۡبَٰبِ l-asbābi the means
am lahum mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā falyartaqū fī l-asbābi
Or ˹is it because˺ the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between belongs to them? Let them then climb their way ˹to heaven, if their claim is true˺.
جُندٞ jundun Soldiers مَّا mā there هُنَالِكَ hunālika there مَهۡزُومٞ mahzūmun (they will be) defeated مِّنَ mina among ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ l-aḥzābi the companies
jundun mā hunālika mahzūmun mina l-aḥzābi
This is just another ˹enemy˺ force bound for defeat out there.
كَذَّبَتۡ kadhabat Denied قَبۡلَهُمۡ qablahum before them قَوۡمُ qawmu (the) people نُوحٖ nūḥin (of) Nuh وَعَادٞ waʿādun and Aad وَفِرۡعَوۡنُ wafir'ʿawnu and Firaun ذُو dhū (the) owner ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ l-awtādi (of) the stakes
kadhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin waʿādun wafir'ʿawnu dhū l-awtādi
Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth˺, as did ’Âd, Pharaoh of the mighty structures,
وَثَمُودُ wathamūdu And Thamud وَقَوۡمُ waqawmu and (the) people لُوطٖ lūṭin (of) Lut وَأَصۡحَٰبُ wa-aṣḥābu and (the) companions لۡـَٔيۡكَةِۚ al'aykati (of) the wood أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ulāika Those ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ l-aḥzābu (were) the companies
wathamūdu waqawmu lūṭin wa-aṣḥābu al'aykati ulāika l-aḥzābu
Thamûd, the people of Lot, and the residents of the Forest. These were ˹all˺ enemy forces.
إِن in Not كُلٌّ kullun all (of them) إِلَّا illā but كَذَّبَ kadhaba denied ٱلرُّسُلَ l-rusula the Messengers فَحَقَّ faḥaqqa so (was) just عِقَابِ ʿiqābi My penalty
in kullun illā kadhaba l-rusula faḥaqqa ʿiqābi
Each rejected their messenger, so My punishment was justified.
وَمَا wamā And not يَنظُرُ yanẓuru await هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ hāulāi these إِلَّا illā but صَيۡحَةٗ ṣayḥatan a shout وَٰحِدَةٗ wāḥidatan one مَّا mā not لَهَا lahā for it مِن min any فَوَاقٖ fawāqin delay
wamā yanẓuru hāulāi illā ṣayḥatan wāḥidatan mā lahā min fawāqin
These ˹pagans˺ are awaiting nothing but a single Blast that cannot be stopped.
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they say رَبَّنَا rabbanā Our Lord عَجِّل ʿajjil Hasten لَّنَا lanā for us قِطَّنَا qiṭṭanā our share قَبۡلَ qabla before يَوۡمِ yawmi (the) Day ٱلۡحِسَابِ l-ḥisābi (of) the Account
waqālū rabbanā ʿajjil lanā qiṭṭanā qabla yawmi l-ḥisābi
They say ˹mockingly˺, “Our Lord! Hasten for us our share ˹of the punishment˺ before the Day of Reckoning.”
ٱصۡبِرۡ iṣ'bir Be patient عَلَىٰ ʿalā over مَا mā what يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna they say وَٱذۡكُرۡ wa-udh'kur and remember عَبۡدَنَا ʿabdanā Our slave دَاوُۥدَ dāwūda Dawood ذَا dhā the possessor of strength ٱلۡأَيۡدِۖ l-aydi the possessor of strength إِنَّهُۥٓ innahu Indeed, he (was) أَوَّابٌ awwābun repeatedly turning
iṣ'bir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wa-udh'kur ʿabdanā dāwūda dhā l-aydi innahu awwābun
Be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say. And remember Our servant, David, the man of strength. Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.
إِنَّا innā Indeed, We سَخَّرۡنَا sakharnā subjected ٱلۡجِبَالَ l-jibāla the mountains مَعَهُۥ maʿahu with him يُسَبِّحۡنَ yusabbiḥ'na glorifying بِٱلۡعَشِيِّ bil-ʿashiyi in the evening وَٱلۡإِشۡرَاقِ wal-ish'rāqi and [the] sunrise
innā sakharnā l-jibāla maʿahu yusabbiḥ'na bil-ʿashiyi wal-ish'rāqi
We truly subjected the mountains to hymn ˹Our praises˺ along with him in the evening and after sunrise.
وَٱلطَّيۡرَ wal-ṭayra And the birds مَحۡشُورَةٗۖ maḥshūratan assembled كُلّٞ kullun all لَّهُۥٓ lahu with him أَوَّابٞ awwābun repeatedly turning
wal-ṭayra maḥshūratan kullun lahu awwābun
And ˹We subjected˺ the birds, flocking together. All turned to him ˹echoing his hymns˺.
وَشَدَدۡنَا washadadnā And We strengthened مُلۡكَهُۥ mul'kahu his kingdom وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُ waātaynāhu and We gave him ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ l-ḥik'mata [the] wisdom وَفَصۡلَ wafaṣla and decisive ٱلۡخِطَابِ l-khiṭābi speech
washadadnā mul'kahu waātaynāhu l-ḥik'mata wafaṣla l-khiṭābi
We strengthened his kingship, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment.
۞ وَهَلۡ wahal And has (there) أَتَىٰكَ atāka come to you نَبَؤُاْ naba-u (the) news ٱلۡخَصۡمِ l-khaṣmi (of) the litigants إِذۡ idh when تَسَوَّرُواْ tasawwarū they climbed over the wall ٱلۡمِحۡرَابَ l-miḥ'rāba (of) the chamber
wahal atāka naba-u l-khaṣmi idh tasawwarū l-miḥ'rāba
Has the story of the two plaintiffs, who scaled the ˹wall of David’s˺ sanctuary, reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
إِذۡ idh When دَخَلُواْ dakhalū they entered عَلَىٰ ʿalā upon دَاوُۥدَ dāwūda Dawood فَفَزِعَ fafaziʿa and he was afraid مِنۡهُمۡۖ min'hum of them قَالُواْ qālū they said لَا lā (Do) not تَخَفۡۖ takhaf fear خَصۡمَانِ khaṣmāni (We are) two litigants بَغَىٰ baghā has wronged بَعۡضُنَا baʿḍunā one of us عَلَىٰ ʿalā to بَعۡضٖ baʿḍin another فَٱحۡكُم fa-uḥ'kum so judge بَيۡنَنَا baynanā between us بِٱلۡحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi in truth وَلَا walā and (do) not تُشۡطِطۡ tush'ṭiṭ be unjust وَٱهۡدِنَآ wa-ih'dinā and guide us إِلَىٰ ilā to سَوَآءِ sawāi an even ٱلصِّرَٰطِ l-ṣirāṭi [the] path
idh dakhalū ʿalā dāwūda fafaziʿa min'hum qālū lā takhaf khaṣmāni baghā baʿḍunā ʿalā baʿḍin fa-uḥ'kum baynanā bil-ḥaqi walā tush'ṭiṭ wa-ih'dinā ilā sawāi l-ṣirāṭi
When they came into David’s presence, he was startled by them. They said, “Have no fear. ˹We are merely˺ two in a dispute: one of us has wronged the other. So judge between us with truth—do not go beyond ˹it˺—and guide us to the right way.
إِنَّ inna Indeed هَٰذَآ hādhā this أَخِي akhī (is) my brother لَهُۥ lahu he has تِسۡعٞ tis'ʿun ninety-nine وَتِسۡعُونَ watis'ʿūna ninety-nine نَعۡجَةٗ naʿjatan ewe(s) وَلِيَ waliya while I have نَعۡجَةٞ naʿjatun ewe وَٰحِدَةٞ wāḥidatun one فَقَالَ faqāla so he said أَكۡفِلۡنِيهَا akfil'nīhā Entrust her to me وَعَزَّنِي waʿazzanī and he overpowered me فِي fī in ٱلۡخِطَابِ l-khiṭābi [the] speech
inna hādhā akhī lahu tis'ʿun watis'ʿūna naʿjatan waliya naʿjatun wāḥidatun faqāla akfil'nīhā waʿazzanī fī l-khiṭābi
This is my brother. He has ninety-nine sheep while I have ˹only˺ one. ˹Still˺ he asked me to give it up to him, overwhelming me with ˹his˺ argument.”
قَالَ qāla He said لَقَدۡ laqad Certainly ظَلَمَكَ ẓalamaka he has wronged you بِسُؤَالِ bisuāli by demanding نَعۡجَتِكَ naʿjatika your ewe إِلَىٰ ilā to نِعَاجِهِۦۖ niʿājihi his ewes وَإِنَّ wa-inna And indeed كَثِيرٗا kathīran many مِّنَ mina of ٱلۡخُلَطَآءِ l-khulaṭāi the partners لَيَبۡغِي layabghī certainly oppress بَعۡضُهُمۡ baʿḍuhum some of them عَلَىٰ ʿalā [on] بَعۡضٍ baʿḍin another إِلَّا illā except ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ءَامَنُواْ āmanū believe وَعَمِلُواْ waʿamilū and do ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ l-ṣāliḥāti righteous deeds وَقَلِيلٞ waqalīlun and few مَّا mā (are) they هُمۡۗ hum (are) they وَظَنَّ waẓanna And became certain دَاوُۥدُ dāwūdu Dawood أَنَّمَا annamā that فَتَنَّٰهُ fatannāhu We (had) tried him فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ fa-is'taghfara and he asked forgiveness رَبَّهُۥ rabbahu (of) his Lord وَخَرَّۤ wakharra and fell down رَاكِعٗاۤ rākiʿan bowing وَأَنَابَ ۩ wa-anāba and turned in repentance
qāla laqad ẓalamaka bisuāli naʿjatika ilā niʿājihi wa-inna kathīran mina l-khulaṭāi layabghī baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti waqalīlun mā hum waẓanna dāwūdu annamā fatannāhu fa-is'taghfara rabbahu wakharra rākiʿan wa-anāba
David ˹eventually˺ ruled, “He has definitely wronged you in demanding ˹to add˺ your sheep to his. And certainly many partners wrong each other, except those who believe and do good—but how few are they!” Then David realized that We had tested him so he asked for his Lord’s forgiveness, fell down in prostration, and turned ˹to Him in repentance˺.
فَغَفَرۡنَا faghafarnā So We forgave لَهُۥ lahu for him ذَٰلِكَۖ dhālika that وَإِنَّ wa-inna And indeed لَهُۥ lahu for him عِندَنَا ʿindanā with Us لَزُلۡفَىٰ lazul'fā surely is a near access وَحُسۡنَ waḥus'na and a good مَـَٔابٖ maābin place of return
faghafarnā lahu dhālika wa-inna lahu ʿindanā lazul'fā waḥus'na maābin
So We forgave that for him. And he will indeed have ˹a status of˺ closeness to Us and an honourable destination!
يَٰدَاوُۥدُ yādāwūdu O Dawood إِنَّا innā Indeed, We جَعَلۡنَٰكَ jaʿalnāka [We] have made you خَلِيفَةٗ khalīfatan a vicegerent فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth فَٱحۡكُم fa-uḥ'kum so judge بَيۡنَ bayna between ٱلنَّاسِ l-nāsi [the] men بِٱلۡحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi in truth وَلَا walā and (do) not تَتَّبِعِ tattabiʿi follow ٱلۡهَوَىٰ l-hawā the desire فَيُضِلَّكَ fayuḍillaka for it will lead you astray عَن ʿan from سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِۚ l-lahi (of) Allah إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who يَضِلُّونَ yaḍillūna go astray عَن ʿan from سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) way ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah لَهُمۡ lahum for them عَذَابٞ ʿadhābun (is) a punishment شَدِيدُۢ shadīdun severe بِمَا bimā because نَسُواْ nasū they forgot يَوۡمَ yawma (the) Day ٱلۡحِسَابِ l-ḥisābi (of) Account
yādāwūdu innā jaʿalnāka khalīfatan fī l-arḍi fa-uḥ'kum bayna l-nāsi bil-ḥaqi walā tattabiʿi l-hawā fayuḍillaka ʿan sabīli l-lahi inna alladhīna yaḍillūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi lahum ʿadhābun shadīdun bimā nasū yawma l-ḥisābi
˹We instructed him:˺ “O David! We have surely made you an authority in the land, so judge between people with truth. And do not follow ˹your˺ desires or they will lead you astray from Allah’s Way. Surely those who go astray from Allah’s Way will suffer a severe punishment for neglecting the Day of Reckoning.”
وَمَا wamā And not خَلَقۡنَا khalaqnā We created ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa the heaven وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ wal-arḍa and the earth وَمَا wamā and whatever بَيۡنَهُمَا baynahumā (is) between them بَٰطِلٗاۚ bāṭilan without purpose ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That ظَنُّ ẓannu (is the) assumption ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (of) those who كَفَرُواْۚ kafarū disbelieve فَوَيۡلٞ fawaylun So woe لِّلَّذِينَ lilladhīna to those كَفَرُواْ kafarū who disbelieve مِنَ mina from ٱلنَّارِ l-nāri the Fire
wamā khalaqnā l-samāa wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā bāṭilan dhālika ẓannu alladhīna kafarū fawaylun lilladhīna kafarū mina l-nāri
We have not created the heavens and earth and everything in between without purpose—as the disbelievers think. So woe to the disbelievers because of the Fire!
أَمۡ am Or نَجۡعَلُ najʿalu should We treat ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ءَامَنُواْ āmanū believe وَعَمِلُواْ waʿamilū and do ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ l-ṣāliḥāti righteous deeds كَٱلۡمُفۡسِدِينَ kal-muf'sidīna like those who spread corruption فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth أَمۡ am Or نَجۡعَلُ najʿalu should We treat ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ l-mutaqīna the pious كَٱلۡفُجَّارِ kal-fujāri like the wicked
am najʿalu alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti kal-muf'sidīna fī l-arḍi am najʿalu l-mutaqīna kal-fujāri
Or should We treat those who believe and do good like those who make mischief throughout the land? Or should We treat the righteous like the wicked?
كِتَٰبٌ kitābun (This is) a Book أَنزَلۡنَٰهُ anzalnāhu We have revealed it إِلَيۡكَ ilayka to you مُبَٰرَكٞ mubārakun blessed لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓاْ liyaddabbarū that they may ponder ءَايَٰتِهِۦ āyātihi (over) its Verses وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ waliyatadhakkara and may be reminded أُوْلُواْ ulū those of understanding ٱلۡأَلۡبَٰبِ l-albābi those of understanding
kitābun anzalnāhu ilayka mubārakun liyaddabbarū āyātihi waliyatadhakkara ulū l-albābi
˹This is˺ a blessed Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that they may contemplate its verses, and people of reason may be mindful.
وَوَهَبۡنَا wawahabnā And We gave لِدَاوُۥدَ lidāwūda to Dawood سُلَيۡمَٰنَۚ sulaymāna Sulaiman نِعۡمَ niʿ'ma an excellent ٱلۡعَبۡدُ l-ʿabdu slave إِنَّهُۥٓ innahu Indeed, he أَوَّابٌ awwābun (was) one who repeatedly turned
wawahabnā lidāwūda sulaymāna niʿ'ma l-ʿabdu innahu awwābun
And We blessed David with Solomon—what an excellent servant ˹he was˺! Indeed, he ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺.
