Abasa

عَبَسَʿabasaHe frownedوَتَوَلَّىٰٓwatawallāand turned away

ʿabasa watawallā

He frowned and turned ˹his attention˺ away,

أَنanBecauseجَآءَهُjāahucame to himٱلۡأَعۡمَىٰl-aʿmāthe blind man

an jāahu l-aʿmā

˹simply˺ because the blind man came to him ˹interrupting˺.

وَمَاwamāBut whatيُدۡرِيكَyud'rīkawould make you knowلَعَلَّهُۥlaʿallahuthat he mightيَزَّكَّىٰٓyazzakkāpurify himself

wamā yud'rīka laʿallahu yazzakkā

You never know ˹O Prophet˺, perhaps he may be purified,

أَوۡawOrيَذَّكَّرُyadhakkarube remindedفَتَنفَعَهُfatanfaʿahuso would benefit himٱلذِّكۡرَىٰٓl-dhik'rāthe reminder

aw yadhakkaru fatanfaʿahu l-dhik'rā

or he may be mindful, benefitting from the reminder.

أَمَّاammāAs forمَنِmani(him) whoٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰis'taghnāconsiders himself free from need

ammā mani is'taghnā

As for the one who was indifferent,

فَأَنتَfa-antaSo youلَهُۥlahuto himتَصَدَّىٰtaṣaddāgive attention

fa-anta lahu taṣaddā

you gave him your ˹undivided˺ attention,

وَمَاwamāAnd notعَلَيۡكَʿalaykaupon youأَلَّاallāthat notيَزَّكَّىٰyazzakkāhe purifies himself

wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakkā

even though you are not to blame if he would not be purified.

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنman(he) whoجَآءَكَjāakacame to youيَسۡعَىٰyasʿāstriving

wa-ammā man jāaka yasʿā

But as for the one who came to you, eager ˹to learn˺,

وَهُوَwahuwaWhile heيَخۡشَىٰyakhshāfears

wahuwa yakhshā

being in awe ˹of Allah˺,

فَأَنتَfa-antaBut youعَنۡهُʿanhufrom himتَلَهَّىٰtalahhā(are) distracted

fa-anta ʿanhu talahhā

you were inattentive to him.

كـَلَّآkallāNayإِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, itتَذۡكِرَةٞtadhkiratun(is) a reminder

kallā innahā tadhkiratun

But no! This ˹revelation˺ is truly a reminder.

فَمَنfamanSo whosoeverشَآءَshāawillsذَكَرَهُۥdhakarahumay remember it

faman shāa dhakarahu

So let whoever wills be mindful of it.

فِيfīInصُحُفٖṣuḥufinsheetsمُّكَرَّمَةٖmukarramatinhonored

fī ṣuḥufin mukarramatin

It is ˹written˺ on pages held in honour—

مَّرۡفُوعَةٖmarfūʿatinExaltedمُّطَهَّرَةِۭmuṭahharatinpurified

marfūʿatin muṭahharatin

highly esteemed, purified—

بِأَيۡدِيbi-aydīIn (the) handsسَفَرَةٖsafaratin(of) scribes

bi-aydī safaratin

by the hands of angel-scribes,

كِرَامِۭkirāminNobleبَرَرَةٖbararatindutiful

kirāmin bararatin

honourable and virtuous.

قُتِلَqutilaIs destroyedٱلۡإِنسَٰنُl-insānu[the] manمَآmāhowأَكۡفَرَهُۥakfarahuungrateful is he

qutila l-insānu mā akfarahu

Condemned are ˹disbelieving˺ humans! How ungrateful they are ˹to Allah˺!

مِنۡminFromأَيِّayyiwhatشَيۡءٍshayinthingخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created him

min ayyi shayin khalaqahu

From what substance did He create them?

مِنminFromنُّطۡفَةٍnuṭ'fatina semen-dropخَلَقَهُۥkhalaqahuHe created himفَقَدَّرَهُۥfaqaddarahuthen He proportioned him

min nuṭ'fatin khalaqahu faqaddarahu

He created them from a sperm-drop, and ordained their development.

ثُمَّthummaThenٱلسَّبِيلَl-sabīlathe wayيَسَّرَهُۥyassarahuHe made easy for him

thumma l-sabīla yassarahu

Then He makes the way easy for them,

ثُمَّthummaThenأَمَاتَهُۥamātahuHe causes him to dieفَأَقۡبَرَهُۥfa-aqbarahuand provides a grave for him

thumma amātahu fa-aqbarahu

then causes them to die and be buried.

ثُمَّthummaThenإِذَاidhāwhenشَآءَshāaHe willsأَنشَرَهُۥansharahuHe will resurrect him

thumma idhā shāa ansharahu

Then when He wills, He will resurrect them.

كـَلَّاkallāNayلَمَّاlammāNotيَقۡضِyaqḍihe has accomplishedمَآmāwhatأَمَرَهُۥamarahuHe commanded him

kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarahu

But no! They have failed to comply with what He ordered.

فَلۡيَنظُرِfalyanẓuriThen let lookٱلۡإِنسَٰنُl-insānuthe manإِلَىٰilāatطَعَامِهِۦٓṭaʿāmihihis food

falyanẓuri l-insānu ilā ṭaʿāmihi

Let people then consider their food:

أَنَّاannāThat [We]صَبَبۡنَاṣababnā[We] pouredٱلۡمَآءَl-māathe waterصَبّٗاṣabban(in) abundance

annā ṣababnā l-māa ṣabban

how We pour down rain in abundance

ثُمَّthummaThenشَقَقۡنَاshaqaqnāWe cleavedٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍathe earthشَقّٗاshaqqansplitting

thumma shaqaqnā l-arḍa shaqqan

and meticulously split the earth open ˹for sprouts˺,

فَأَنۢبَتۡنَاfa-anbatnāThen We caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinحَبّٗاḥabbangrain

fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabban

causing grain to grow in it,

وَعِنَبٗاwaʿinabanAnd grapesوَقَضۡبٗاwaqaḍbanand green fodder

waʿinaban waqaḍban

as well as grapes and greens,

وَزَيۡتُونٗاwazaytūnanAnd oliveوَنَخۡلٗاwanakhlanand date-palms

wazaytūnan wanakhlan

and olives and palm trees,

وَحَدَآئِقَwaḥadāiqaAnd gardensغُلۡبٗاghul'ban(of) thick foliage

waḥadāiqa ghul'ban

and dense orchards,
