At-Takwir

إِذَاidhāWhenٱلشَّمۡسُl-shamsuthe sunكُوِّرَتۡkuwwiratis wrapped up

idhā l-shamsu kuwwirat

When the sun is put out,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلنُّجُومُl-nujūmuthe starsٱنكَدَرَتۡinkadaratfall, losing their luster

wa-idhā l-nujūmu inkadarat

and when the stars fall down,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsسُيِّرَتۡsuyyiratare moved away

wa-idhā l-jibālu suyyirat

and when the mountains are blown away,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡعِشَارُl-ʿishāruthe full-term she-camelsعُطِّلَتۡʿuṭṭilat(are) left untended

wa-idhā l-ʿishāru ʿuṭṭilat

and when pregnant camels are left untended,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡوُحُوشُl-wuḥūshuthe wild beastsحُشِرَتۡḥushiratare gathered

wa-idhā l-wuḥūshu ḥushirat

and when wild beasts are gathered together,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡبِحَارُl-biḥāruthe seasسُجِّرَتۡsujjiratare made to overflow

wa-idhā l-biḥāru sujjirat

and when the seas are set on fire,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلنُّفُوسُl-nufūsuthe soulsزُوِّجَتۡzuwwijatare paired

wa-idhā l-nufūsu zuwwijat

and when the souls ˹and their bodies˺ are paired ˹once more˺,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡمَوۡءُۥدَةُl-mawūdatuthe female infant buried aliveسُئِلَتۡsu-ilatis asked

wa-idhā l-mawūdatu su-ilat

and when baby girls, buried alive, are asked

بِأَيِّbi-ayyiFor whatذَنۢبٖdhanbinsinقُتِلَتۡqutilatshe was killed

bi-ayyi dhanbin qutilat

for what crime they were put to death,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلصُّحُفُl-ṣuḥufuthe pagesنُشِرَتۡnushiratare laid open

wa-idhā l-ṣuḥufu nushirat

and when the records ˹of deeds˺ are laid open,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyكُشِطَتۡkushiṭatis stripped away

wa-idhā l-samāu kushiṭat

and when the sky is stripped away,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡجَحِيمُl-jaḥīmuthe Hellfireسُعِّرَتۡsuʿʿiratis set ablaze

wa-idhā l-jaḥīmu suʿʿirat

and when the Hellfire is fiercely flared up,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡجَنَّةُl-janatuParadiseأُزۡلِفَتۡuz'lifatis brought near

wa-idhā l-janatu uz'lifat

and when Paradise is brought near—

عَلِمَتۡʿalimatWill knowنَفۡسٞnafsuna soulمَّآmāwhatأَحۡضَرَتۡaḥḍaratit has brought

ʿalimat nafsun mā aḥḍarat

˹on that Day˺ each soul will know what ˹deeds˺ it has brought along.

فَلَآfalāBut nayأُقۡسِمُuq'simuI swearبِٱلۡخُنَّسِbil-khunasiby the retreating planets

falā uq'simu bil-khunasi

I do swear by the receding stars

ٱلۡجَوَارِal-jawāriThose that runٱلۡكُنَّسِl-kunasi(and) disappear

al-jawāri l-kunasi

which travel and hide,

وَٱلَّيۡلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenعَسۡعَسَʿasʿasait departs

wa-al-layli idhā ʿasʿasa

and the night as it falls

وَٱلصُّبۡحِwal-ṣub'ḥiAnd the dawnإِذَاidhāwhenتَنَفَّسَtanaffasait breathes

wal-ṣub'ḥi idhā tanaffasa

and the day as it breaks!

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, itلَقَوۡلُlaqawlu(is) surely a wordرَسُولٖrasūlin(of) a Messengerكَرِيمٖkarīminnoble

innahu laqawlu rasūlin karīmin

Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the Word of ˹Allah delivered by Gabriel,˺ a noble messenger-angel,

ذِيdhīPossessor ofقُوَّةٍquwwatinpowerعِندَʿindawithذِيdhī(the) Owner ofٱلۡعَرۡشِl-ʿarshithe Throneمَكِينٖmakīninsecure

dhī quwwatin ʿinda dhī l-ʿarshi makīnin

full of power, held in honour by the Lord of the Throne,

مُّطَاعٖmuṭāʿinOne to be obeyedثَمَّthammaandأَمِينٖamīnintrustworthy

muṭāʿin thamma amīnin

obeyed there ˹in heaven˺, and trustworthy.

وَمَاwamāAnd notصَاحِبُكُمṣāḥibukum(is) your companionبِمَجۡنُونٖbimajnūninmad

wamā ṣāḥibukum bimajnūnin

And your fellow man is not insane.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainlyرَءَاهُraāhuhe saw himبِٱلۡأُفُقِbil-ufuqiin the horizonٱلۡمُبِينِl-mubīnithe clear

walaqad raāhu bil-ufuqi l-mubīni

And he did see that ˹angel˺ on the clear horizon,

وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwahe (is)عَلَىʿalāonٱلۡغَيۡبِl-ghaybithe unseenبِضَنِينٖbiḍanīnina withholder

wamā huwa ʿalā l-ghaybi biḍanīnin

and he does not withhold ˹what is revealed to him of˺ the unseen.

وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwaitبِقَوۡلِbiqawli(is the) wordشَيۡطَٰنٖshayṭānin(of) Shaitaanرَّجِيمٖrajīminaccursed

wamā huwa biqawli shayṭānin rajīmin

And this ˹Quran˺ is not the word of an outcast devil.

فَأَيۡنَfa-aynaSo whereتَذۡهَبُونَtadhhabūnaare you going

fa-ayna tadhhabūna

So what ˹other˺ path would you take?

إِنۡinNotهُوَhuwaitإِلَّاillā(is) exceptذِكۡرٞdhik'runa reminderلِّلۡعَٰلَمِينَlil'ʿālamīnato the worlds

in huwa illā dhik'run lil'ʿālamīna

Surely this ˹Quran˺ is only a reminder to the whole world—

لِمَنlimanFor whoeverشَآءَshāawillsمِنكُمۡminkumamong youأَنantoيَسۡتَقِيمَyastaqīmatake a straight way

liman shāa minkum an yastaqīma

to whoever of you wills to take the Straight Way.

وَمَاwamāAnd notتَشَآءُونَtashāūnayou willإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatيَشَآءَyashāawillsٱللَّهُl-lahuAllahرَبُّrabbuLordٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَl-ʿālamīna(of) the worlds

wamā tashāūna illā an yashāa l-lahu rabbu l-ʿālamīna

But you cannot will ˹to do so˺, except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
