Ḥâ-Mĩm.

وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِwal-kitābiBy the Bookٱلۡمُبِينِl-mubīnithe clear

wal-kitābi l-mubīni

By the clear Book!

إِنَّآinnāIndeed, Weأَنزَلۡنَٰهُanzalnāhurevealed itفِيfīinلَيۡلَةٖlaylatina NightمُّبَٰرَكَةٍۚmubārakatinBlessedإِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weكُنَّاkunnā[We] areمُنذِرِينَmundhirīna(ever) warning

innā anzalnāhu fī laylatin mubārakatin innā kunnā mundhirīna

Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺.

فِيهَاfīhāThereinيُفۡرَقُyuf'raquis made distinctكُلُّkullueveryأَمۡرٍamrinaffairحَكِيمٍḥakīminwise

fīhā yuf'raqu kullu amrin ḥakīmin

On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained

أَمۡرٗاamranA commandمِّنۡminfromعِندِنَآۚʿindināUsإِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weكُنَّاkunnā[We] areمُرۡسِلِينَmur'silīna(ever) sending

amran min ʿindinā innā kunnā mur'silīna

by a command from Us, for We have always sent ˹messengers˺

رَحۡمَةٗraḥmatanAs Mercyمِّنminfromرَّبِّكَۚrabbikayour LordإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, Heهُوَhuwa[He]ٱلسَّمِيعُl-samīʿu(is) the All-Hearerٱلۡعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe All-Knower

raḥmatan min rabbika innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu

as a mercy from your Lord. He ˹alone˺ is truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing—

رَبِّrabbiLordٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلۡأَرۡضِwal-arḍiand the earthوَمَاwamāand whateverبَيۡنَهُمَآۖbaynahumā(is) between both of themإِنinifكُنتُمkuntumyou areمُّوقِنِينَmūqinīnacertain

rabbi l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā in kuntum mūqinīna

the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, if only you had sure faith.

لَآlā(There is) noإِلَٰهَilāhagodإِلَّاillāexceptهُوَhuwaHimيُحۡيِۦyuḥ'yīHe gives lifeوَيُمِيتُۖwayumītuand causes deathرَبُّكُمۡrabbukumyour Lordوَرَبُّwarabbuand (the) Lordءَابَآئِكُمُābāikumu(of) your fathersٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former

lā ilāha illā huwa yuḥ'yī wayumītu rabbukum warabbu ābāikumu l-awalīna

There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He ˹alone˺ gives life and causes death. ˹He is˺ your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers.

بَلۡbalNayهُمۡhumtheyفِيfī(are) inشَكّٖshakkindoubt يَلۡعَبُونَyalʿabūnaplaying

bal hum fī shakkin yalʿabūna

In fact, they are in doubt, amusing themselves.

فَٱرۡتَقِبۡfa-ir'taqibThen watchيَوۡمَyawma(for the) Dayتَأۡتِيtatī(when) will bringٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyبِدُخَانٖbidukhāninsmokeمُّبِينٖmubīninvisible

fa-ir'taqib yawma tatī l-samāu bidukhānin mubīnin

Wait then ˹O Prophet˺ for the day ˹when˺ the sky will be veiled in haze, clearly visible,

يَغۡشَىyaghshāEnvelopingٱلنَّاسَۖl-nāsathe peopleهَٰذَاhādhāThisعَذَابٌʿadhābun(will be) a punishmentأَلِيمٞalīmunpainful

yaghshā l-nāsa hādhā ʿadhābun alīmun

overwhelming the people. ˹They will cry,˺ “This is a painful torment.

رَّبَّنَاrabbanāOur Lordٱكۡشِفۡik'shifRemoveعَنَّاʿannāfrom usٱلۡعَذَابَl-ʿadhābathe punishmentإِنَّاinnāindeed, weمُؤۡمِنُونَmu'minūna(are) believers

rabbanā ik'shif ʿannā l-ʿadhāba innā mu'minūna

Our Lord! Remove ˹this˺ torment from us, ˹and˺ we will certainly believe.”

أَنَّىٰannāHow canلَهُمُlahumu(there be) for themٱلذِّكۡرَىٰl-dhik'rāthe reminderوَقَدۡwaqadwhen verilyجَآءَهُمۡjāahumhad come to themرَسُولٞrasūluna Messengerمُّبِينٞmubīnunclear

annā lahumu l-dhik'rā waqad jāahum rasūlun mubīnun

How can they be reminded when a messenger has already come to them, making things clear,

ثُمَّthummaThenتَوَلَّوۡاْtawallawthey turned awayعَنۡهُʿanhufrom himوَقَالُواْwaqālūand saidمُعَلَّمٞmuʿallamunOne taughtمَّجۡنُونٌmajnūnuna mad man

thumma tawallaw ʿanhu waqālū muʿallamun majnūnun

then they turned away from him, saying, “A madman, taught by others!”?

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, Weكَاشِفُواْkāshifū(will) removeٱلۡعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe punishmentقَلِيلًاۚqalīlana littleإِنَّكُمۡinnakumindeed, youعَآئِدُونَʿāidūna(will) return

innā kāshifū l-ʿadhābi qalīlan innakum ʿāidūna

Indeed, We will remove ˹that˺ torment for a while, and you ˹Meccans˺ will return ˹to disbelief˺.

يَوۡمَyawma(The) DayنَبۡطِشُnabṭishuWe will seizeٱلۡبَطۡشَةَl-baṭshata(with) the seizureٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰٓl-kub'rāthe greatestإِنَّاinnāindeed, Weمُنتَقِمُونَmuntaqimūna(will) take retribution

yawma nabṭishu l-baṭshata l-kub'rā innā muntaqimūna

˹Then˺ on the Day We will deal ˹you˺ the fiercest blow, We will surely inflict punishment.

۞ وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainlyفَتَنَّاfatannāWe triedقَبۡلَهُمۡqablahumbefore themقَوۡمَqawma(the) peopleفِرۡعَوۡنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaunوَجَآءَهُمۡwajāahumand came to themرَسُولٞrasūluna Messengerكَرِيمٌkarīmunnoble

walaqad fatannā qablahum qawma fir'ʿawna wajāahum rasūlun karīmun

Indeed, before them We tested Pharaoh’s people: a noble messenger came to them,

أَنۡanThatأَدُّوٓاْaddūDeliverإِلَيَّilayyato meعِبَادَʿibāda(the) servantsٱللَّهِۖl-lahi(of) AllahإِنِّيinnīIndeed, I amلَكُمۡlakumto youرَسُولٌrasūluna Messengerأَمِينٞamīnuntrustworthy

an addū ilayya ʿibāda l-lahi innī lakum rasūlun amīnun

˹proclaiming,˺ “Hand over the servants of Allah to me. I am truly a trustworthy messenger to you.

وَأَنwa-anAnd thatلَّاlā(do) notتَعۡلُواْtaʿlūexalt yourselvesعَلَىʿalāagainstٱللَّهِۖl-lahiAllahإِنِّيٓinnīIndeed, Iءَاتِيكُمātīkum[I] have come to youبِسُلۡطَٰنٖbisul'ṭāninwith an authorityمُّبِينٖmubīninclear

wa-an lā taʿlū ʿalā l-lahi innī ātīkum bisul'ṭānin mubīnin

And do not be arrogant with Allah. I have certainly come to you with a compelling proof.

وَإِنِّيwa-innīAnd indeed, Iعُذۡتُʿudh'tu[I] seek refugeبِرَبِّيbirabbīwith my Lordوَرَبِّكُمۡwarabbikumand your Lordأَنanlestتَرۡجُمُونِtarjumūniyou stone me

wa-innī ʿudh'tu birabbī warabbikum an tarjumūni

And indeed, I seek refuge with my Lord and your Lord so you do not stone me ˹to death˺.

وَإِنwa-inAnd ifلَّمۡlamnotتُؤۡمِنُواْtu'minūyou believeلِيlīmeفَٱعۡتَزِلُونِfa-iʿ'tazilūnithen leave me alone

wa-in lam tu'minū lī fa-iʿ'tazilūni

˹But˺ if you do not believe me, then let me be.”

فَدَعَاfadaʿāSo he calledرَبَّهُۥٓrabbahuhis LordأَنَّannaThatهَٰٓؤُلَآءِhāulāitheseقَوۡمٞqawmun(are) a peopleمُّجۡرِمُونَmuj'rimūnacriminals

fadaʿā rabbahu anna hāulāi qawmun muj'rimūna

Ultimately, he cried out to his Lord, “These are a wicked people!”

فَأَسۡرِfa-asriThen "Set outبِعِبَادِيbiʿibādīwith My slavesلَيۡلًاlaylan(by) nightإِنَّكُمinnakumIndeed, youمُّتَّبَعُونَmuttabaʿūna(will be) followed

fa-asri biʿibādī laylan innakum muttabaʿūna

˹Allah responded,˺ “Leave with My servants at night, for you will surely be pursued.

وَٱتۡرُكِwa-ut'rukiAnd leaveٱلۡبَحۡرَl-baḥrathe seaرَهۡوًاۖrahwanat restإِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, theyجُندٞjundun(are) an armyمُّغۡرَقُونَmugh'raqūna(to be) drowned

wa-ut'ruki l-baḥra rahwan innahum jundun mugh'raqūna

And leave the sea parted, for they are certainly an army bound to drown.”

كَمۡkamHow manyتَرَكُواْtarakū(did) they leaveمِنminofجَنَّٰتٖjannātingardensوَعُيُونٖwaʿuyūninand springs

kam tarakū min jannātin waʿuyūnin

˹Imagine˺ how many gardens and springs the tyrants left behind,

وَزُرُوعٖwazurūʿinAnd cornfieldsوَمَقَامٖwamaqāminand placesكَرِيمٖkarīminnoble

wazurūʿin wamaqāmin karīmin

as well as ˹various˺ crops and splendid residences,

وَنَعۡمَةٖwanaʿmatinAnd pleasant thingsكَانُواْkānūthey used toفِيهَاfīhāthereinفَٰكِهِينَfākihīnatake delight

wanaʿmatin kānū fīhā fākihīna

and luxuries which they fully enjoyed.

كَذَٰلِكَۖkadhālikaThusوَأَوۡرَثۡنَٰهَاwa-awrathnāhāAnd We made it (an) inherit(ance)قَوۡمًاqawman(for) a peopleءَاخَرِينَākharīnaanother

kadhālika wa-awrathnāhā qawman ākharīna

So it was. And We awarded it ˹all˺ to another people.

فَمَاfamāAnd notبَكَتۡbakatweptعَلَيۡهِمُʿalayhimufor themٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenوَٱلۡأَرۡضُwal-arḍuand the earthوَمَاwamāand notكَانُواْkānūthey wereمُنظَرِينَmunẓarīnagiven respite

famā bakat ʿalayhimu l-samāu wal-arḍu wamā kānū munẓarīna

Neither heaven nor earth wept over them, nor was their fate delayed.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainlyنَجَّيۡنَاnajjaynāWe savedبَنِيٓbanī(the) Children of Israelإِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَis'rāīla(the) Children of Israelمِنَminafromٱلۡعَذَابِl-ʿadhābithe punishmentٱلۡمُهِينِl-muhīnithe humiliating

walaqad najjaynā banī is'rāīla mina l-ʿadhābi l-muhīni

And We certainly delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment
