بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
حمٓ hha-meem Ha Meem
hha-meem
Ḥâ-Mĩm.
وَٱلۡكِتَٰبِ wal-kitābi By the Book ٱلۡمُبِينِ l-mubīni the clear
wal-kitābi l-mubīni
By the clear Book!
إِنَّا innā Indeed, We جَعَلۡنَٰهُ jaʿalnāhu (have) made it قُرۡءَٰنًا qur'ānan a Quran عَرَبِيّٗا ʿarabiyyan (in) Arabic لَّعَلَّكُمۡ laʿallakum so that you may تَعۡقِلُونَ taʿqilūna understand
innā jaʿalnāhu qur'ānan ʿarabiyyan laʿallakum taʿqilūna
Certainly, We have made it a Quran in Arabic so perhaps you will understand.
وَإِنَّهُۥ wa-innahu And indeed, it فِيٓ fī (is) in أُمِّ ummi (the) Mother ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ l-kitābi (of) the Book لَدَيۡنَا ladaynā with Us لَعَلِيٌّ laʿaliyyun surely exalted حَكِيمٌ ḥakīmun full of wisdom
wa-innahu fī ummi l-kitābi ladaynā laʿaliyyun ḥakīmun
And indeed, it is—in the Master Record with Us—highly esteemed, rich in wisdom.
أَفَنَضۡرِبُ afanaḍribu Then should We take away عَنكُمُ ʿankumu from you ٱلذِّكۡرَ l-dhik'ra the Reminder صَفۡحًا ṣafḥan disregarding (you) أَن an because كُنتُمۡ kuntum you are قَوۡمٗا qawman a people مُّسۡرِفِينَ mus'rifīna transgressing
afanaḍribu ʿankumu l-dhik'ra ṣafḥan an kuntum qawman mus'rifīna
Should We then turn the ˹Quranic˺ Reminder away from you ˹simply˺ because you have been a transgressing people?
وَكَمۡ wakam And how many أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā We sent مِن min of نَّبِيّٖ nabiyyin a Prophet فِي fī among ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna the former (people)
wakam arsalnā min nabiyyin fī l-awalīna
˹Imagine˺ how many prophets We sent to those ˹destroyed˺ before!
وَمَا wamā And not يَأۡتِيهِم yatīhim came to them مِّن min any Prophet نَّبِيٍّ nabiyyin any Prophet إِلَّا illā but كَانُواْ kānū they used to بِهِۦ bihi mock at him يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ yastahziūna mock at him
wamā yatīhim min nabiyyin illā kānū bihi yastahziūna
But no prophet ever came to them without being mocked.
فَأَهۡلَكۡنَآ fa-ahlaknā Then We destroyed أَشَدَّ ashadda stronger مِنۡهُم min'hum than them بَطۡشٗا baṭshan (in) power وَمَضَىٰ wamaḍā and has passed مَثَلُ mathalu (the) example ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)
fa-ahlaknā ashadda min'hum baṭshan wamaḍā mathalu l-awalīna
So We destroyed those who were far mightier than these ˹Meccans˺. The examples of ˹their˺ predecessors have ˹already˺ been related.
وَلَئِن wala-in And if سَأَلۡتَهُم sa-altahum you ask them مَّنۡ man Who خَلَقَ khalaqa created ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ wal-arḍa and the earth لَيَقُولُنَّ layaqūlunna They will surely say خَلَقَهُنَّ khalaqahunna Created them ٱلۡعَزِيزُ l-ʿazīzu the All-Mighty ٱلۡعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu the All-Knower
wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna khalaqahunna l-ʿazīzu l-ʿalīmu
If you ask them ˹O Prophet˺ who created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly say, “The Almighty, All-Knowing did.”
ٱلَّذِي alladhī The One Who جَعَلَ jaʿala made لَكُمُ lakumu for you ٱلۡأَرۡضَ l-arḍa the earth مَهۡدٗا mahdan a bed وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala and made لَكُمۡ lakum for you فِيهَا fīhā therein سُبُلٗا subulan roads لَّعَلَّكُمۡ laʿallakum so that you may تَهۡتَدُونَ tahtadūna (be) guided
alladhī jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa mahdan wajaʿala lakum fīhā subulan laʿallakum tahtadūna
˹He is the One˺ Who has laid out the earth for you, and set in it pathways for you so that you may find your way.
وَٱلَّذِي wa-alladhī And the One Who نَزَّلَ nazzala sends down مِنَ mina from ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the sky مَآءَۢ māan water بِقَدَرٖ biqadarin in (due) measure فَأَنشَرۡنَا fa-ansharnā then We revive بِهِۦ bihi with it بَلۡدَةٗ baldatan a land مَّيۡتٗاۚ maytan dead كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika thus تُخۡرَجُونَ tukh'rajūna you will be brought forth
wa-alladhī nazzala mina l-samāi māan biqadarin fa-ansharnā bihi baldatan maytan kadhālika tukh'rajūna
And ˹He is the One˺ Who sends down rain from the sky in perfect measure, with which We give life to a lifeless land. And so will you be brought forth ˹from the grave˺.
وَٱلَّذِي wa-alladhī And the One Who خَلَقَ khalaqa created ٱلۡأَزۡوَٰجَ l-azwāja the pairs كُلَّهَا kullahā all of them وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala and made لَكُم lakum for you مِّنَ mina [of] ٱلۡفُلۡكِ l-ful'ki the ships وَٱلۡأَنۡعَٰمِ wal-anʿāmi and the cattle مَا mā what تَرۡكَبُونَ tarkabūna you ride
wa-alladhī khalaqa l-azwāja kullahā wajaʿala lakum mina l-ful'ki wal-anʿāmi mā tarkabūna
And ˹He is the One˺ Who created all ˹things in˺ pairs, and made for you ships and animals to ride
لِتَسۡتَوُۥاْ litastawū That you may sit firmly عَلَىٰ ʿalā on ظُهُورِهِۦ ẓuhūrihi their backs ثُمَّ thumma then تَذۡكُرُواْ tadhkurū remember نِعۡمَةَ niʿ'mata (the) favor رَبِّكُمۡ rabbikum (of) your Lord إِذَا idhā when ٱسۡتَوَيۡتُمۡ is'tawaytum you sit firmly عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi on them وَتَقُولُواْ wataqūlū and say سُبۡحَٰنَ sub'ḥāna Glory be (to) ٱلَّذِي alladhī the One Who سَخَّرَ sakhara (has) subjected لَنَا lanā to us هَٰذَا hādhā this وَمَا wamā and not كُنَّا kunnā we were لَهُۥ lahu of it مُقۡرِنِينَ muq'rinīna capable
litastawū ʿalā ẓuhūrihi thumma tadhkurū niʿ'mata rabbikum idhā is'tawaytum ʿalayhi wataqūlū sub'ḥāna alladhī sakhara lanā hādhā wamā kunnā lahu muq'rinīna
so that you may sit firmly on their backs, and remember your Lord’s blessings once you are settled on them, saying, “Glory be to the One Who has subjected these for us, for we could have never done so ˹on our own˺.
وَإِنَّآ wa-innā And indeed, we إِلَىٰ ilā to رَبِّنَا rabbinā our Lord لَمُنقَلِبُونَ lamunqalibūna will surely return
wa-innā ilā rabbinā lamunqalibūna
And surely to our Lord we will ˹all˺ return.”
وَجَعَلُواْ wajaʿalū But they attribute لَهُۥ lahu to Him مِنۡ min from عِبَادِهِۦ ʿibādihi His slaves جُزۡءًاۚ juz'an a portion إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ l-insāna man لَكَفُورٞ lakafūrun surely (is) clearly ungrateful مُّبِينٌ mubīnun surely (is) clearly ungrateful
wajaʿalū lahu min ʿibādihi juz'an inna l-insāna lakafūrun mubīnun
Still the pagans have made some of His creation out to be a part of Him. Indeed, humankind is clearly ungrateful.
أَمِ ami Or ٱتَّخَذَ ittakhadha has He taken مِمَّا mimmā of what يَخۡلُقُ yakhluqu He has created بَنَاتٖ banātin daughters وَأَصۡفَىٰكُم wa-aṣfākum and He has chosen (for) you بِٱلۡبَنِينَ bil-banīna sons
ami ittakhadha mimmā yakhluqu banātin wa-aṣfākum bil-banīna
Has He taken ˹angels as His˺ daughters from what He created, and favoured you ˹O pagans˺ with sons?
وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when بُشِّرَ bushira is given good news أَحَدُهُم aḥaduhum (to) one of them بِمَا bimā of what ضَرَبَ ḍaraba he sets up لِلرَّحۡمَٰنِ lilrraḥmāni for the Most Gracious مَثَلٗا mathalan (as) a likeness ظَلَّ ẓalla becomes وَجۡهُهُۥ wajhuhu his face مُسۡوَدّٗا mus'waddan dark وَهُوَ wahuwa and he كَظِيمٌ kaẓīmun (is) filled with grief
wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bimā ḍaraba lilrraḥmāni mathalan ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmun
Whenever one of them is given the good news of what they attribute to the Most Compassionate, his face grows gloomy, as he suppresses his rage.
أَوَمَن awaman Then (is one) who يُنَشَّؤُاْ yunasha-u is brought up فِي fī in ٱلۡحِلۡيَةِ l-ḥil'yati ornaments وَهُوَ wahuwa and he فِي fī in ٱلۡخِصَامِ l-khiṣāmi the dispute غَيۡرُ ghayru (is) not مُبِينٖ mubīnin clear
awaman yunasha-u fī l-ḥil'yati wahuwa fī l-khiṣāmi ghayru mubīnin
˹Do they attribute to Him˺ those who are brought up in fineries and are not commanding in disputes?
وَجَعَلُواْ wajaʿalū And they made ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ l-malāikata the Angels ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who هُمۡ hum themselves عِبَٰدُ ʿibādu (are) slaves ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ l-raḥmāni (of) the Most Gracious إِنَٰثًاۚ ināthan females أَشَهِدُواْ ashahidū Did they witness خَلۡقَهُمۡۚ khalqahum their creation سَتُكۡتَبُ satuk'tabu Will be recorded شَهَٰدَتُهُمۡ shahādatuhum their testimony وَيُسۡـَٔلُونَ wayus'alūna and they will be questioned
wajaʿalū l-malāikata alladhīna hum ʿibādu l-raḥmāni ināthan ashahidū khalqahum satuk'tabu shahādatuhum wayus'alūna
Still they have labelled the angels, who are servants of the Most Compassionate, as female. Did they witness their creation? Their statement will be recorded, and they will be questioned!
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they say لَوۡ law If شَآءَ shāa had willed ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ l-raḥmānu the Most Gracious مَا mā we would not have worshipped them عَبَدۡنَٰهُمۗ ʿabadnāhum we would not have worshipped them مَّا mā Not لَهُم lahum they have بِذَٰلِكَ bidhālika about that مِنۡ min any عِلۡمٍۖ ʿil'min knowledge إِنۡ in Nothing هُمۡ hum they (do) إِلَّا illā but يَخۡرُصُونَ yakhruṣūna lie
waqālū law shāa l-raḥmānu mā ʿabadnāhum mā lahum bidhālika min ʿil'min in hum illā yakhruṣūna
And they argue, “Had the Most Compassionate willed, we would have never worshipped them.” They have no knowledge ˹in support˺ of this ˹claim˺. They do nothing but lie.
أَمۡ am Or ءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمۡ ātaynāhum have We given them كِتَٰبٗا kitāban a book مِّن min before it قَبۡلِهِۦ qablihi before it فَهُم fahum so they بِهِۦ bihi to it مُسۡتَمۡسِكُونَ mus'tamsikūna (are) holding fast
am ātaynāhum kitāban min qablihi fahum bihi mus'tamsikūna
Or have We given them a Book ˹for proof˺, before this ˹Quran˺, to which they are holding firm?
بَلۡ bal Nay قَالُوٓاْ qālū they say إِنَّا innā Indeed, we وَجَدۡنَآ wajadnā [we] found ءَابَآءَنَا ābāanā our forefathers عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā upon أُمَّةٖ ummatin a religion وَإِنَّا wa-innā and indeed, we عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā on ءَاثَٰرِهِم āthārihim their footsteps مُّهۡتَدُونَ muh'tadūna (are) guided
bal qālū innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muh'tadūna
In fact, they say, “We found our forefathers following a ˹particular˺ way, and we are following in their footsteps.”
وَكَذَٰلِكَ wakadhālika And thus مَآ mā not أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā We sent مِن min before you قَبۡلِكَ qablika before you فِي fī in قَرۡيَةٖ qaryatin a town مِّن min any نَّذِيرٍ nadhīrin warner إِلَّا illā except قَالَ qāla said مُتۡرَفُوهَآ mut'rafūhā (the) wealthy ones of it إِنَّا innā Indeed, we وَجَدۡنَآ wajadnā [we] found ءَابَآءَنَا ābāanā our forefathers عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā on أُمَّةٖ ummatin a religion وَإِنَّا wa-innā and indeed, we عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā [on] ءَاثَٰرِهِم āthārihim their footsteps مُّقۡتَدُونَ muq'tadūna (are) following
wakadhālika mā arsalnā min qablika fī qaryatin min nadhīrin illā qāla mut'rafūhā innā wajadnā ābāanā ʿalā ummatin wa-innā ʿalā āthārihim muq'tadūna
Similarly, whenever We sent a warner to a society before you ˹O Prophet˺, its ˹spoiled˺ elite would say, “We found our forefathers following a ˹particular˺ way, and we are walking in their footsteps.”
۞ قَٰلَ qāla He said أَوَلَوۡ awalaw Even if جِئۡتُكُم ji'tukum I brought you بِأَهۡدَىٰ bi-ahdā better guidance مِمَّا mimmā than what وَجَدتُّمۡ wajadttum you found عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi on it ءَابَآءَكُمۡۖ ābāakum your forefathers قَالُوٓاْ qālū They said إِنَّا innā Indeed, we بِمَآ bimā with what أُرۡسِلۡتُم ur'sil'tum you are sent بِهِۦ bihi with [it] كَٰفِرُونَ kāfirūna (are) disbelievers
qāla awalaw ji'tukum bi-ahdā mimmā wajadttum ʿalayhi ābāakum qālū innā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi kāfirūna
Each ˹warner˺ asked, “Even if what I brought you is better guidance than what you found your forefathers practicing?” They replied, “We totally reject whatever you have been sent with.”
فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا fa-intaqamnā So We took retribution مِنۡهُمۡۖ min'hum from them فَٱنظُرۡ fa-unẓur Then see كَيۡفَ kayfa how كَانَ kāna was عَٰقِبَةُ ʿāqibatu (the) end ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ l-mukadhibīna (of) the deniers
fa-intaqamnā min'hum fa-unẓur kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu l-mukadhibīna
So We inflicted punishment upon them. See then what was the fate of the deniers!
وَإِذۡ wa-idh And when قَالَ qāla Ibrahim Said إِبۡرَٰهِيمُ ib'rāhīmu Ibrahim Said لِأَبِيهِ li-abīhi to his father وَقَوۡمِهِۦٓ waqawmihi and his people إِنَّنِي innanī Indeed, I (am) بَرَآءٞ barāon disassociated مِّمَّا mimmā from what تَعۡبُدُونَ taʿbudūna you worship
wa-idh qāla ib'rāhīmu li-abīhi waqawmihi innanī barāon mimmā taʿbudūna
˹Remember, O Prophet˺ when Abraham declared to his father and his people, “I am totally free of whatever ˹gods˺ you worship,
إِلَّا illā Except ٱلَّذِي alladhī the One Who فَطَرَنِي faṭaranī created me فَإِنَّهُۥ fa-innahu and indeed, He سَيَهۡدِينِ sayahdīni will guide me
illā alladhī faṭaranī fa-innahu sayahdīni
except the One Who originated me, and He will surely guide me.”
وَجَعَلَهَا wajaʿalahā And he made it كَلِمَةَۢ kalimatan a word بَاقِيَةٗ bāqiyatan lasting فِي fī among عَقِبِهِۦ ʿaqibihi his descendents لَعَلَّهُمۡ laʿallahum so that they may يَرۡجِعُونَ yarjiʿūna return
wajaʿalahā kalimatan bāqiyatan fī ʿaqibihi laʿallahum yarjiʿūna
And he left this enduring declaration among his descendants, so they may ˹always˺ turn back ˹to Allah˺.
بَلۡ bal Nay مَتَّعۡتُ mattaʿtu I gave enjoyment هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ hāulāi (to) these وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ waābāahum and their forefathers حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until جَآءَهُمُ jāahumu came to them ٱلۡحَقُّ l-ḥaqu the truth وَرَسُولٞ warasūlun and a Messenger مُّبِينٞ mubīnun clear
bal mattaʿtu hāulāi waābāahum ḥattā jāahumu l-ḥaqu warasūlun mubīnun
In fact, I had allowed enjoyment for these ˹Meccans˺ and their forefathers, until the truth came to them along with a messenger making things clear.
وَلَمَّا walammā And when جَآءَهُمُ jāahumu came to them ٱلۡحَقُّ l-ḥaqu the truth قَالُواْ qālū they said هَٰذَا hādhā This سِحۡرٞ siḥ'run (is) magic وَإِنَّا wa-innā and indeed, we بِهِۦ bihi of it كَٰفِرُونَ kāfirūna (are) disbelievers
walammā jāahumu l-ḥaqu qālū hādhā siḥ'run wa-innā bihi kāfirūna
˹But˺ when the truth came to them, they said, “This is magic, and we totally reject it.”
