Adh-Dhariyat

وَٱلذَّٰرِيَٰتِwal-dhāriyātiBy those scatteringذَرۡوٗاdharwandispersing

wal-dhāriyāti dharwan

By the winds scattering ˹dust˺,

فَٱلۡحَٰمِلَٰتِfal-ḥāmilātiAnd those carryingوِقۡرٗاwiq'rana load

fal-ḥāmilāti wiq'ran

and ˹the clouds˺ loaded with rain,

فَٱلۡجَٰرِيَٰتِfal-jāriyātiAnd those sailingيُسۡرٗاyus'ran(with) ease

fal-jāriyāti yus'ran

and ˹the ships˺ gliding with ease,

فَٱلۡمُقَسِّمَٰتِfal-muqasimātiAnd those distributingأَمۡرًاamranCommand

fal-muqasimāti amran

and ˹the angels˺ administering affairs by ˹Allah’s˺ command!

إِنَّمَاinnamāIndeed, whatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promisedلَصَادِقٞlaṣādiqun(is) surely true

innamā tūʿadūna laṣādiqun

Indeed, what you are promised is true.

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedٱلدِّينَl-dīnathe Judgmentلَوَٰقِعٞlawāqiʿun(is) surely to occur

wa-inna l-dīna lawāqiʿun

And the Judgment will certainly come to pass.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiBy the heavenذَاتِdhātifull ofٱلۡحُبُكِl-ḥubukipathways

wal-samāi dhāti l-ḥubuki

˹And˺ by the heavens in their marvellous design!

إِنَّكُمۡinnakumIndeed, youلَفِيlafī(are) surely inقَوۡلٖqawlina speechمُّخۡتَلِفٖmukh'talifindiffering

innakum lafī qawlin mukh'talifin

Surely you are ˹lost˺ in conflicting views ˹regarding the truth˺.

يُؤۡفَكُyu'fakuDeluded awayعَنۡهُʿanhufrom itمَنۡman(is he) whoأُفِكَufikais deluded

yu'faku ʿanhu man ufika

Only those ˹destined to be˺ deluded are turned away from it.

قُتِلَqutilaCursed beٱلۡخَرَّٰصُونَl-kharāṣūnathe liars

qutila l-kharāṣūna

Condemned are the liars—

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoهُمۡhum[they]فِيfī(are) inغَمۡرَةٖghamratinfloodسَاهُونَsāhūna(of) heedlessness

alladhīna hum fī ghamratin sāhūna

those who are ˹steeped˺ in ignorance, totally heedless.

يَسۡـَٔلُونَyasalūnaThey askأَيَّانَayyānaWhenيَوۡمُyawmu(is the) Dayٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) Judgment

yasalūna ayyāna yawmu l-dīni

They ask ˹mockingly˺, “When is this Day of Judgment?”

يَوۡمَyawmaA Dayهُمۡhumtheyعَلَىʿalāoverٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fireيُفۡتَنُونَyuf'tanūnawill be tried

yawma hum ʿalā l-nāri yuf'tanūna

˹It is˺ the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.

ذُوقُواْdhūqūTasteفِتۡنَتَكُمۡfit'natakumyour trialهَٰذَاhādhāThisٱلَّذِيalladhī(is) whatكُنتُمkuntumyou wereبِهِۦbihifor itتَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَtastaʿjilūnaseeking to hasten

dhūqū fit'natakum hādhā alladhī kuntum bihi tastaʿjilūna

˹They will be told,˺ “Taste your torment! This is what you sought to hasten.”

إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلۡمُتَّقِينَl-mutaqīnathe righteousفِيfī(will be) inجَنَّٰتٖjannātinGardensوَعُيُونٍwaʿuyūninand springs

inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin waʿuyūnin

Indeed, the righteous will be amid Gardens and springs,

ءَاخِذِينَākhidhīnaTakingمَآmāwhatءَاتَىٰهُمۡātāhumtheir Lord has given themرَبُّهُمۡۚrabbuhumtheir Lord has given themإِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُواْkānūwereقَبۡلَqablabeforeذَٰلِكَdhālikathatمُحۡسِنِينَmuḥ'sinīnagood-doers

ākhidhīna mā ātāhum rabbuhum innahum kānū qabla dhālika muḥ'sinīna

˹joyfully˺ receiving what their Lord will grant them. Before this ˹reward˺ they were truly good-doers ˹in the world˺:

كَانُواْkānūThey used toقَلِيلٗاqalīlanlittleمِّنَminaofٱلَّيۡلِal-laylithe nightمَاmā[what]يَهۡجَعُونَyahjaʿūnasleep

kānū qalīlan mina al-layli mā yahjaʿūna

they used to sleep only little in the night,

وَبِٱلۡأَسۡحَارِwabil-asḥāriAnd in the hours before dawnهُمۡhumtheyيَسۡتَغۡفِرُونَyastaghfirūnawould ask forgiveness

wabil-asḥāri hum yastaghfirūna

and pray for forgiveness before dawn.

وَفِيٓwafīAnd inأَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡamwālihimtheir wealthحَقّٞḥaqqun(was the) rightلِّلسَّآئِلِlilssāili(of) those who askedوَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِwal-maḥrūmiand the deprived

wafī amwālihim ḥaqqun lilssāili wal-maḥrūmi

And in their wealth there was a rightful share ˹fulfilled˺ for the beggar and the poor.

وَفِيwafīAnd inٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earthءَايَٰتٞāyātun(are) signsلِّلۡمُوقِنِينَlil'mūqinīnafor those who are certain

wafī l-arḍi āyātun lil'mūqinīna

There are ˹countless˺ signs on earth for those with sure faith,

وَفِيٓwafīAnd inأَنفُسِكُمۡۚanfusikumyourselvesأَفَلَاafalāThen will notتُبۡصِرُونَtub'ṣirūnayou see

wafī anfusikum afalā tub'ṣirūna

as there are within yourselves. Can you not see?

وَفِيwafīAnd inٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heavenرِزۡقُكُمۡriz'qukum(is) your provisionوَمَاwamāand whatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promised

wafī l-samāi riz'qukum wamā tūʿadūna

In heaven is your sustenance and whatever you are promised.

فَوَرَبِّfawarabbiThen by (the) Lordٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāi(of) the heavenوَٱلۡأَرۡضِwal-arḍiand the earthإِنَّهُۥinnahuindeed, itلَحَقّٞlaḥaqqun(is) surely (the) truthمِّثۡلَmith'la(just) asمَآmā[what]أَنَّكُمۡannakumyouتَنطِقُونَtanṭiqūnaspeak

fawarabbi l-samāi wal-arḍi innahu laḥaqqun mith'la mā annakum tanṭiqūna

Then by the Lord of heaven and earth! ˹All˺ this is certainly as true as ˹the fact that˺ you can speak!

هَلۡhalHasأَتَىٰكَatākareached youحَدِيثُḥadīthu(the) narrationضَيۡفِḍayfi(of the) guestsإِبۡرَٰهِيمَib'rāhīma(of) Ibrahimٱلۡمُكۡرَمِينَl-muk'ramīnathe honored

hal atāka ḥadīthu ḍayfi ib'rāhīma l-muk'ramīna

Has the story of Abraham’s honoured guests reached you ˹O Prophet˺?

إِذۡidhWhenدَخَلُواْdakhalūthey enteredعَلَيۡهِʿalayhiupon himفَقَالُواْfaqālūand saidسَلَٰمٗاۖsalāmanPeaceقَالَqālaHe saidسَلَٰمٞsalāmunPeaceقَوۡمٞqawmuna peopleمُّنكَرُونَmunkarūnaunknown

idh dakhalū ʿalayhi faqālū salāman qāla salāmun qawmun munkarūna

˹Remember˺ when they entered his presence and greeted ˹him with˺, “Peace!” He replied, “Peace ˹be upon you˺!” ˹Then he said to himself,˺ “These people must be strangers!”

فَرَاغَfarāghaThen he wentإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهۡلِهِۦahlihihis householdفَجَآءَfajāaand cameبِعِجۡلٖbiʿij'linwith a calfسَمِينٖsamīninfat

farāgha ilā ahlihi fajāa biʿij'lin samīnin

Then he slipped off to his family and brought a fat ˹roasted˺ calf,

فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓfaqarrabahuAnd he placed it nearإِلَيۡهِمۡilayhim[to] themقَالَqālahe saidأَلَاalāWill notتَأۡكُلُونَtakulūnayou eat

faqarrabahu ilayhim qāla alā takulūna

and placed it before them, asking, “Will you not eat?”

فَأَوۡجَسَfa-awjasaThen he feltمِنۡهُمۡmin'humfrom themخِيفَةٗۖkhīfatana fearقَالُواْqālūThey saidلَاlā(Do) notتَخَفۡۖtakhaffearوَبَشَّرُوهُwabasharūhuand they gave him glad tidingsبِغُلَٰمٍbighulāminof a sonعَلِيمٖʿalīminlearned

fa-awjasa min'hum khīfatan qālū lā takhaf wabasharūhu bighulāmin ʿalīmin

˹They did not eat,˺ so he grew fearful of them. They reassured ˹him˺, “Do not be afraid,” and gave him good news of a knowledgeable son.

فَأَقۡبَلَتِfa-aqbalatiThen came forwardٱمۡرَأَتُهُۥim'ra-atuhuhis wifeفِيfīwithصَرَّةٖṣarratina loud voiceفَصَكَّتۡfaṣakkatand struckوَجۡهَهَاwajhahāher faceوَقَالَتۡwaqālatand she saidعَجُوزٌʿajūzunAn old womanعَقِيمٞʿaqīmunbarren

fa-aqbalati im'ra-atuhu fī ṣarratin faṣakkat wajhahā waqālat ʿajūzun ʿaqīmun

Then his wife came forward with a cry, clasping her forehead ˹in astonishment˺, exclaiming, “˹A baby from˺ a barren, old woman!”

قَالُواْqālūThey saidكَذَٰلِكِkadhālikiThusقَالَqālasaidرَبُّكِۖrabbukiyour LordإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, Heهُوَhuwa[He]ٱلۡحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmu(is) the All-Wiseٱلۡعَلِيمُl-ʿalīmuthe All-Knower

qālū kadhāliki qāla rabbuki innahu huwa l-ḥakīmu l-ʿalīmu

They replied, “Such has your Lord decreed. He is truly the All-Wise, All-Knowing.”
