بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
وَٱلطُّورِ wal-ṭūri By the Mount
wal-ṭūri
By Mount Ṭûr!
وَكِتَٰبٖ wakitābin And by (the) Book مَّسۡطُورٖ masṭūrin written
wakitābin masṭūrin
And by the Book written
فِي fī In رَقّٖ raqqin parchment مَّنشُورٖ manshūrin unrolled
fī raqqin manshūrin
on open pages ˹for all to read˺!
وَٱلۡبَيۡتِ wal-bayti By the House ٱلۡمَعۡمُورِ l-maʿmūri frequented
wal-bayti l-maʿmūri
And by the ˹Sacred˺ House frequently visited!
وَٱلسَّقۡفِ wal-saqfi By the roof ٱلۡمَرۡفُوعِ l-marfūʿi raised high
wal-saqfi l-marfūʿi
And by the canopy raised ˹high˺!
وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ wal-baḥri By the sea ٱلۡمَسۡجُورِ l-masjūri filled
wal-baḥri l-masjūri
And by the seas set on fire!
إِنَّ inna Indeed عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (the) punishment رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord لَوَٰقِعٞ lawāqiʿun (will) surely occur
inna ʿadhāba rabbika lawāqiʿun
Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will come to pass—
مَّا mā Not لَهُۥ lahu for it مِن min any دَافِعٖ dāfiʿin preventer
mā lahu min dāfiʿin
none will avert it—
يَوۡمَ yawma (On the) Day تَمُورُ tamūru will shake ٱلسَّمَآءُ l-samāu the heaven مَوۡرٗا mawran (with violent) shake
yawma tamūru l-samāu mawran
on the Day the heavens will be shaken violently,
وَتَسِيرُ watasīru And will move away ٱلۡجِبَالُ l-jibālu the mountains سَيۡرٗا sayran (with an awful) movement
watasīru l-jibālu sayran
and the mountains will be blown away entirely.
فَوَيۡلٞ fawaylun Then woe يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin that Day لِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ lil'mukadhibīna to the deniers
fawaylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna
Then woe on that Day to the deniers—
ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna Who هُمۡ hum [they] فِي fī in خَوۡضٖ khawḍin (vain) discourse يَلۡعَبُونَ yalʿabūna are playing
alladhīna hum fī khawḍin yalʿabūna
those who amuse themselves with falsehood!
يَوۡمَ yawma (The) Day يُدَعُّونَ yudaʿʿūna they will be thrust إِلَىٰ ilā (in)to نَارِ nāri (the) Fire جَهَنَّمَ jahannama (of) Hell دَعًّا daʿʿan (with) a thrust
yawma yudaʿʿūna ilā nāri jahannama daʿʿan
˹It is˺ the Day they will be fiercely shoved into the Fire of Hell.
هَٰذِهِ hādhihi This ٱلنَّارُ l-nāru (is) the Fire ٱلَّتِي allatī which كُنتُم kuntum you used to بِهَا bihā [of it] تُكَذِّبُونَ tukadhibūna deny
hādhihi l-nāru allatī kuntum bihā tukadhibūna
˹They will be told,˺ “This is the Fire which you used to deny.
أَفَسِحۡرٌ afasiḥ'run Then is this magic هَٰذَآ hādhā Then is this magic أَمۡ am or أَنتُمۡ antum you لَا lā (do) not تُبۡصِرُونَ tub'ṣirūna see
afasiḥ'run hādhā am antum lā tub'ṣirūna
Is this magic, or do you not see?
ٱصۡلَوۡهَا iṣ'lawhā Burn in it فَٱصۡبِرُوٓاْ fa-iṣ'birū then be patient أَوۡ aw or لَا lā (do) not تَصۡبِرُواْ taṣbirū be patient سَوَآءٌ sawāon (it is) same عَلَيۡكُمۡۖ ʿalaykum for you إِنَّمَا innamā Only تُجۡزَوۡنَ tuj'zawna you are being recompensed مَا mā (for) what كُنتُمۡ kuntum you used to تَعۡمَلُونَ taʿmalūna do
iṣ'lawhā fa-iṣ'birū aw lā taṣbirū sawāon ʿalaykum innamā tuj'zawna mā kuntum taʿmalūna
Burn in it! It is the same whether you endure ˹it˺ patiently or not. You are only rewarded for what you used to do.”
إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ l-mutaqīna the righteous فِي fī (will be) in جَنَّٰتٖ jannātin Gardens وَنَعِيمٖ wanaʿīmin and pleasure
inna l-mutaqīna fī jannātin wanaʿīmin
Indeed, the righteous will be in Gardens and bliss,
فَٰكِهِينَ fākihīna Enjoying بِمَآ bimā in what ءَاتَىٰهُمۡ ātāhum has given them رَبُّهُمۡ rabbuhum their Lord وَوَقَىٰهُمۡ wawaqāhum and protected them رَبُّهُمۡ rabbuhum their Lord عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (from the) punishment ٱلۡجَحِيمِ l-jaḥīmi (of) Hellfire
fākihīna bimā ātāhum rabbuhum wawaqāhum rabbuhum ʿadhāba l-jaḥīmi
enjoying whatever their Lord will have granted them. And their Lord will have protected them from the torment of the Hellfire.
كُلُواْ kulū Eat وَٱشۡرَبُواْ wa-ish'rabū and drink هَنِيٓـَٔۢا hanīan (in) satisfaction بِمَا bimā for what كُنتُمۡ kuntum you used to تَعۡمَلُونَ taʿmalūna do
kulū wa-ish'rabū hanīan bimā kuntum taʿmalūna
˹They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink happily for what you used to do.”
مُتَّكِـِٔينَ muttakiīna Reclining عَلَىٰ ʿalā on سُرُرٖ sururin thrones مَّصۡفُوفَةٖۖ maṣfūfatin lined up وَزَوَّجۡنَٰهُم wazawwajnāhum and We will marry them بِحُورٍ biḥūrin to fair ones عِينٖ ʿīnin (with) large eyes
muttakiīna ʿalā sururin maṣfūfatin wazawwajnāhum biḥūrin ʿīnin
They will be reclining on thrones, ˹neatly˺ lined up ˹facing each other˺. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.
وَٱلَّذِينَ wa-alladhīna And those who ءَامَنُواْ āmanū believed وَٱتَّبَعَتۡهُمۡ wa-ittabaʿathum and followed them ذُرِّيَّتُهُم dhurriyyatuhum their offspring بِإِيمَٰنٍ biīmānin in faith أَلۡحَقۡنَا alḥaqnā We will join بِهِمۡ bihim with them ذُرِّيَّتَهُمۡ dhurriyyatahum their offspring وَمَآ wamā and not أَلَتۡنَٰهُم alatnāhum We will deprive them مِّنۡ min of عَمَلِهِم ʿamalihim their deeds مِّن min (in) any شَيۡءٖۚ shayin thing كُلُّ kullu Every ٱمۡرِيِٕۭ im'ri-in person بِمَا bimā for what كَسَبَ kasaba he earned رَهِينٞ rahīnun (is) pledged
wa-alladhīna āmanū wa-ittabaʿathum dhurriyyatuhum biīmānin alḥaqnā bihim dhurriyyatahum wamā alatnāhum min ʿamalihim min shayin kullu im'ri-in bimā kasaba rahīnun
As for those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith, We will elevate their descendants to their rank, never discounting anything ˹of the reward˺ of their deeds. Every person will reap only what they sowed.
وَأَمۡدَدۡنَٰهُم wa-amdadnāhum And We will provide them بِفَٰكِهَةٖ bifākihatin with fruit وَلَحۡمٖ walaḥmin and meat مِّمَّا mimmā from what يَشۡتَهُونَ yashtahūna they desire
wa-amdadnāhum bifākihatin walaḥmin mimmā yashtahūna
And We will ˹continually˺ provide them with whatever fruit or meat they desire.
يَتَنَٰزَعُونَ yatanāzaʿūna They will pass to one another فِيهَا fīhā therein كَأۡسٗا kasan a cup لَّا lā no لَغۡوٞ laghwun ill speech فِيهَا fīhā therein وَلَا walā and no تَأۡثِيمٞ tathīmun sin
yatanāzaʿūna fīhā kasan lā laghwun fīhā walā tathīmun
They will pass around to each other a drink ˹of pure wine,˺ which leads to no idle talk or sinfulness.
۞ وَيَطُوفُ wayaṭūfu And will circulate عَلَيۡهِمۡ ʿalayhim among them غِلۡمَانٞ ghil'mānun boys لَّهُمۡ lahum for them كَأَنَّهُمۡ ka-annahum as if they (were) لُؤۡلُؤٞ lu'lu-on pearls مَّكۡنُونٞ maknūnun well-protected
wayaṭūfu ʿalayhim ghil'mānun lahum ka-annahum lu'lu-on maknūnun
And they will be waited on by their youthful servants like spotless pearls.
وَأَقۡبَلَ wa-aqbala And will approach بَعۡضُهُمۡ baʿḍuhum some of them عَلَىٰ ʿalā to بَعۡضٖ baʿḍin others يَتَسَآءَلُونَ yatasāalūna inquiring
wa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatasāalūna
They will turn to one another inquisitively.
قَالُوٓاْ qālū They will say إِنَّا innā Indeed, we كُنَّا kunnā [we] were قَبۡلُ qablu before فِيٓ fī among أَهۡلِنَا ahlinā our families مُشۡفِقِينَ mush'fiqīna fearful
qālū innā kunnā qablu fī ahlinā mush'fiqīna
They will say, “Before ˹this reward˺ we used to be in awe ˹of Allah˺ in the midst of our people.
فَمَنَّ famanna But Allah conferred favor ٱللَّهُ l-lahu But Allah conferred favor عَلَيۡنَا ʿalaynā upon us وَوَقَىٰنَا wawaqānā and protected us عَذَابَ ʿadhāba (from the) punishment ٱلسَّمُومِ l-samūmi (of) the Scorching Fire
famanna l-lahu ʿalaynā wawaqānā ʿadhāba l-samūmi
So Allah has graced us and protected us from the torment of ˹Hell’s˺ scorching heat.
إِنَّا innā Indeed, we كُنَّا kunnā [we] used to مِن min before قَبۡلُ qablu before نَدۡعُوهُۖ nadʿūhu call Him إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He هُوَ huwa [He] ٱلۡبَرُّ l-baru (is) the Most Kind ٱلرَّحِيمُ l-raḥīmu the Most Merciful
innā kunnā min qablu nadʿūhu innahu huwa l-baru l-raḥīmu
Indeed, we used to call upon Him ˹alone˺ before. He is truly the Most Kind, Most Merciful.”
فَذَكِّرۡ fadhakkir Therefore remind فَمَآ famā for not أَنتَ anta you بِنِعۡمَتِ biniʿ'mati (are) by (the) grace رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord بِكَاهِنٖ bikāhinin a soothsayer وَلَا walā and not مَجۡنُونٍ majnūnin a madman
fadhakkir famā anta biniʿ'mati rabbika bikāhinin walā majnūnin
So ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺. For you, by the grace of your Lord, are not a fortune-teller or a madman.
أَمۡ am Or يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna (do) they say شَاعِرٞ shāʿirun A poet نَّتَرَبَّصُ natarabbaṣu we wait بِهِۦ bihi for him رَيۡبَ rayba a misfortune of time ٱلۡمَنُونِ l-manūni a misfortune of time
am yaqūlūna shāʿirun natarabbaṣu bihi rayba l-manūni
Or do they say, “˹He is˺ a poet, for whom we ˹eagerly˺ await an ill-fate!”?
