بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
ٱقۡتَرَبَ iq'taraba (Has) approached لِلنَّاسِ lilnnāsi for [the] mankind حِسَابُهُمۡ ḥisābuhum their account وَهُمۡ wahum while they فِي fī (are) in غَفۡلَةٖ ghaflatin heedlessness مُّعۡرِضُونَ muʿ'riḍūna turning away
iq'taraba lilnnāsi ḥisābuhum wahum fī ghaflatin muʿ'riḍūna
˹The time of˺ people’s judgment has drawn near, yet they are heedlessly turning away.
مَا mā Not يَأۡتِيهِم yatīhim comes to them مِّن min of ذِكۡرٖ dhik'rin a Reminder مِّن min from رَّبِّهِم rabbihim their Lord مُّحۡدَثٍ muḥ'dathin anew إِلَّا illā except ٱسۡتَمَعُوهُ is'tamaʿūhu they listen to it وَهُمۡ wahum while they يَلۡعَبُونَ yalʿabūna (are at) play
mā yatīhim min dhik'rin min rabbihim muḥ'dathin illā is'tamaʿūhu wahum yalʿabūna
Whatever new reminder comes to them from their Lord, they only listen to it jokingly,
لَاهِيَةٗ lāhiyatan Distracted قُلُوبُهُمۡۗ qulūbuhum their hearts وَأَسَرُّواْ wa-asarrū And they conceal ٱلنَّجۡوَى l-najwā the private conversation ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who ظَلَمُواْ ẓalamū [they] wronged هَلۡ hal Is هَٰذَآ hādhā this إِلَّا illā except بَشَرٞ basharun a human being مِّثۡلُكُمۡۖ mith'lukum like you أَفَتَأۡتُونَ afatatūna So would you approach ٱلسِّحۡرَ l-siḥ'ra the magic وَأَنتُمۡ wa-antum while you تُبۡصِرُونَ tub'ṣirūna see (it)
lāhiyatan qulūbuhum wa-asarrū l-najwā alladhīna ẓalamū hal hādhā illā basharun mith'lukum afatatūna l-siḥ'ra wa-antum tub'ṣirūna
with their hearts ˹totally˺ distracted. The evildoers would converse secretly, ˹saying,˺ “Is this ˹one˺ not human like yourselves? Would you fall for ˹this˺ witchcraft, even though you can ˹clearly˺ see?”
قَالَ qāla He said رَبِّي rabbī My Lord يَعۡلَمُ yaʿlamu knows ٱلۡقَوۡلَ l-qawla the word فِي fī in ٱلسَّمَآءِ l-samāi the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ wal-arḍi and the earth وَهُوَ wahuwa And He ٱلسَّمِيعُ l-samīʿu (is) the All-Hearer ٱلۡعَلِيمُ l-ʿalīmu the All-Knower
qāla rabbī yaʿlamu l-qawla fī l-samāi wal-arḍi wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīmu
The Prophet responded, “My Lord ˹fully˺ knows every word spoken in the heavens and the earth. For He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
بَلۡ bal Nay قَالُوٓاْ qālū they say أَضۡغَٰثُ aḍghāthu Muddled أَحۡلَٰمِۭ aḥlāmin dreams بَلِ bali nay ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ if'tarāhu he (has) invented it بَلۡ bal nay هُوَ huwa he شَاعِرٞ shāʿirun (is) a poet فَلۡيَأۡتِنَا falyatinā So let him bring us بِـَٔايَةٖ biāyatin a sign كَمَآ kamā like what أُرۡسِلَ ur'sila was sent ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ l-awalūna (to) the former
bal qālū aḍghāthu aḥlāmin bali if'tarāhu bal huwa shāʿirun falyatinā biāyatin kamā ur'sila l-awalūna
Yet they say, “This ˹Quran˺ is a set of confused dreams! No, he has fabricated it! No, he must be a poet! So let him bring us a ˹tangible˺ sign like those ˹prophets˺ sent before.”
مَآ mā Not ءَامَنَتۡ āmanat believed قَبۡلَهُم qablahum before them مِّن min any قَرۡيَةٍ qaryatin town أَهۡلَكۡنَٰهَآۖ ahlaknāhā which We destroyed أَفَهُمۡ afahum so will they يُؤۡمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe
mā āmanat qablahum min qaryatin ahlaknāhā afahum yu'minūna
Not a ˹single˺ society We destroyed before them ever believed ˹after receiving the signs˺. Will these ˹pagans˺ then believe?
وَمَآ wamā And not أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā We sent قَبۡلَكَ qablaka before you إِلَّا illā except رِجَالٗا rijālan men نُّوحِيٓ nūḥī We revealed إِلَيۡهِمۡۖ ilayhim to them فَسۡـَٔلُوٓاْ fasalū So ask أَهۡلَ ahla (the) people ٱلذِّكۡرِ l-dhik'ri (of) the Reminder إِن in if كُنتُمۡ kuntum you لَا lā (do) not تَعۡلَمُونَ taʿlamūna know
wamā arsalnā qablaka illā rijālan nūḥī ilayhim fasalū ahla l-dhik'ri in kuntum lā taʿlamūna
We did not send ˹messengers˺ before you ˹O Prophet˺ except mere men inspired by Us. If you ˹polytheists˺ do not know ˹this already˺, then ask those who have knowledge ˹of the Scriptures˺.
وَمَا wamā And not جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ jaʿalnāhum We made them جَسَدٗا jasadan bodies لَّا lā not يَأۡكُلُونَ yakulūna eating ٱلطَّعَامَ l-ṭaʿāma the food وَمَا wamā and not كَانُواْ kānū they were خَٰلِدِينَ khālidīna immortals
wamā jaʿalnāhum jasadan lā yakulūna l-ṭaʿāma wamā kānū khālidīna
We did not give those messengers ˹supernatural˺ bodies that did not need food, nor were they immortal.
ثُمَّ thumma Then صَدَقۡنَٰهُمُ ṣadaqnāhumu We fulfilled (for) them ٱلۡوَعۡدَ l-waʿda the promise فَأَنجَيۡنَٰهُمۡ fa-anjaynāhum and We saved them وَمَن waman and whom نَّشَآءُ nashāu We willed وَأَهۡلَكۡنَا wa-ahlaknā and We destroyed ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ l-mus'rifīna the transgressors
thumma ṣadaqnāhumu l-waʿda fa-anjaynāhum waman nashāu wa-ahlaknā l-mus'rifīna
Then We fulfilled Our promise to them, saving them along with whoever We willed and destroying the transgressors.
لَقَدۡ laqad Indeed أَنزَلۡنَآ anzalnā We (have) sent down إِلَيۡكُمۡ ilaykum to you كِتَٰبٗا kitāban a Book فِيهِ fīhi in it ذِكۡرُكُمۡۚ dhik'rukum (is) your mention أَفَلَا afalā Then will not تَعۡقِلُونَ taʿqilūna you use reason
laqad anzalnā ilaykum kitāban fīhi dhik'rukum afalā taʿqilūna
We have surely revealed to you a Book, in which there is glory for you. Will you not then understand?
وَكَمۡ wakam And how many قَصَمۡنَا qaṣamnā We (have) shattered مِن min of قَرۡيَةٖ qaryatin a town كَانَتۡ kānat (that) was ظَالِمَةٗ ẓālimatan unjust وَأَنشَأۡنَا wa-anshanā and We produced بَعۡدَهَا baʿdahā after them قَوۡمًا qawman another people ءَاخَرِينَ ākharīna another people
wakam qaṣamnā min qaryatin kānat ẓālimatan wa-anshanā baʿdahā qawman ākharīna
˹Imagine˺ how many societies of wrongdoers We have destroyed, raising up other people after them!
فَلَمَّآ falammā Then when أَحَسُّواْ aḥassū they perceived بَأۡسَنَآ basanā Our torment إِذَا idhā behold هُم hum they مِّنۡهَا min'hā from it يَرۡكُضُونَ yarkuḍūna were fleeing
falammā aḥassū basanā idhā hum min'hā yarkuḍūna
When the wrongdoers sensed ˹the arrival of˺ Our torment, they started to run away from their cities.
لَا lā Flee not تَرۡكُضُواْ tarkuḍū Flee not وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْ wa-ir'jiʿū but return إِلَىٰ ilā to مَآ mā what أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡ ut'rif'tum you were given luxury فِيهِ fīhi in it وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡ wamasākinikum and to your homes لَعَلَّكُمۡ laʿallakum so that you may تُسۡـَٔلُونَ tus'alūna be questioned
lā tarkuḍū wa-ir'jiʿū ilā mā ut'rif'tum fīhi wamasākinikum laʿallakum tus'alūna
˹They were told,˺ “Do not run away! Return to your luxuries and your homes, so you may be questioned ˹about your fate˺.”
قَالُواْ qālū They said يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ yāwaylanā O woe to us إِنَّا innā Indeed, [we] كُنَّا kunnā we were ظَٰلِمِينَ ẓālimīna wrongdoers
qālū yāwaylanā innā kunnā ẓālimīna
They cried, “Woe to us! We have surely been wrongdoers.”
فَمَا famā Then not زَالَت zālat ceased تِّلۡكَ til'ka [this] دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ daʿwāhum their cry حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until جَعَلۡنَٰهُمۡ jaʿalnāhum We made them حَصِيدًا ḥaṣīdan reaped خَٰمِدِينَ khāmidīna extinct
famā zālat til'ka daʿwāhum ḥattā jaʿalnāhum ḥaṣīdan khāmidīna
They kept repeating their cry until We mowed them down, ˹leaving them˺ lifeless.
وَمَا wamā And not خَلَقۡنَا khalaqnā We created ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ wal-arḍa and the earth وَمَا wamā and what بَيۡنَهُمَا baynahumā (is) between them لَٰعِبِينَ lāʿibīna (for) playing
wamā khalaqnā l-samāa wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā lāʿibīna
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything in between for sport.
لَوۡ law If أَرَدۡنَآ aradnā We intended أَن an that نَّتَّخِذَ nattakhidha We take لَهۡوٗا lahwan a pastime لَّٱتَّخَذۡنَٰهُ la-ittakhadhnāhu surely We (could have) taken it مِن min from لَّدُنَّآ ladunnā Us إِن in if كُنَّا kunnā We were فَٰعِلِينَ fāʿilīna doers
law aradnā an nattakhidha lahwan la-ittakhadhnāhu min ladunnā in kunnā fāʿilīna
Had We intended to take ˹some˺ amusement, We could have found it in Our presence, if that had been Our Will.
بَلۡ bal Nay نَقۡذِفُ naqdhifu We hurl بِٱلۡحَقِّ bil-ḥaqi the truth عَلَى ʿalā against ٱلۡبَٰطِلِ l-bāṭili [the] falsehood فَيَدۡمَغُهُۥ fayadmaghuhu and it breaks its head فَإِذَا fa-idhā behold هُوَ huwa it (is) زَاهِقٞۚ zāhiqun vanishing وَلَكُمُ walakumu And for you ٱلۡوَيۡلُ l-waylu (is) destruction مِمَّا mimmā for what تَصِفُونَ taṣifūna you ascribe
bal naqdhifu bil-ḥaqi ʿalā l-bāṭili fayadmaghuhu fa-idhā huwa zāhiqun walakumu l-waylu mimmā taṣifūna
In fact, We hurl the truth against falsehood, leaving it crushed, and it quickly vanishes. And woe be to you for what you claim!
وَلَهُۥ walahu And to Him (belongs) مَن man whoever فِي fī (is) in ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ wal-arḍi and the earth وَمَنۡ waman And (those) who عِندَهُۥ ʿindahu (are) near Him لَا lā not يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ yastakbirūna they are arrogant عَنۡ ʿan to عِبَادَتِهِۦ ʿibādatihi worship Him وَلَا walā and not يَسۡتَحۡسِرُونَ yastaḥsirūna they tire
walahu man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi waman ʿindahu lā yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatihi walā yastaḥsirūna
To Him belong all those in the heavens and the earth. And those nearest to Him are not too proud to worship Him, nor do they tire.
يُسَبِّحُونَ yusabbiḥūna They glorify (Him) ٱلَّيۡلَ al-layla [the] night وَٱلنَّهَارَ wal-nahāra and [the] day لَا lā not يَفۡتُرُونَ yafturūna they slacken
yusabbiḥūna al-layla wal-nahāra lā yafturūna
They glorify ˹Him˺ day and night, never wavering.
أَمِ ami Or ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ ittakhadhū (have) they taken ءَالِهَةٗ ālihatan gods مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth هُمۡ hum they يُنشِرُونَ yunshirūna raise (the dead)
ami ittakhadhū ālihatan mina l-arḍi hum yunshirūna
Or have they taken gods from the earth, who can raise the dead?
لَوۡ law If كَانَ kāna (there) were فِيهِمَآ fīhimā in both of them ءَالِهَةٌ ālihatun gods إِلَّا illā besides ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah لَفَسَدَتَاۚ lafasadatā surely they (would) have been ruined فَسُبۡحَٰنَ fasub'ḥāna So glorified ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (is) Allah رَبِّ rabbi Lord ٱلۡعَرۡشِ l-ʿarshi (of) the Throne عَمَّا ʿammā (above) what يَصِفُونَ yaṣifūna they attribute
law kāna fīhimā ālihatun illā l-lahu lafasadatā fasub'ḥāna l-lahi rabbi l-ʿarshi ʿammā yaṣifūna
Had there been other gods besides Allah in the heavens or the earth, both ˹realms˺ would have surely been corrupted. So Glorified is Allah, Lord of the Throne, far above what they claim.
لَا lā Not يُسۡـَٔلُ yus'alu He (can) be questioned عَمَّا ʿammā about what يَفۡعَلُ yafʿalu He does وَهُمۡ wahum but they يُسۡـَٔلُونَ yus'alūna will be questioned
lā yus'alu ʿammā yafʿalu wahum yus'alūna
He cannot be questioned about what He does, but they will ˹all˺ be questioned.
أَمِ ami Or ٱتَّخَذُواْ ittakhadhū (have) they taken مِن min besides Him دُونِهِۦٓ dūnihi besides Him ءَالِهَةٗۖ ālihatan gods قُلۡ qul Say هَاتُواْ hātū Bring بُرۡهَٰنَكُمۡۖ bur'hānakum your proof هَٰذَا hādhā This ذِكۡرُ dhik'ru (is) a Reminder مَن man (for those) who مَّعِيَ maʿiya (are) with me وَذِكۡرُ wadhik'ru and a Reminder مَن man (for those) who قَبۡلِيۚ qablī (were) before me بَلۡ bal But أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ aktharuhum most of them لَا lā (do) not يَعۡلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna know ٱلۡحَقَّۖ l-ḥaqa the truth فَهُم fahum so they مُّعۡرِضُونَ muʿ'riḍūna (are) averse
ami ittakhadhū min dūnihi ālihatan qul hātū bur'hānakum hādhā dhik'ru man maʿiya wadhik'ru man qablī bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūna l-ḥaqa fahum muʿ'riḍūna
Or have they taken other gods besides Him? Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Show ˹me˺ your proof. Here is ˹the Quran,˺ the Reminder for those with me; along with ˹earlier Scriptures,˺ the Reminder for those before me.” But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away.
وَمَآ wamā And not أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā We sent مِن min before you قَبۡلِكَ qablika before you مِن min any رَّسُولٍ rasūlin Messenger إِلَّا illā but نُوحِيٓ nūḥī We reveal(ed) إِلَيۡهِ ilayhi to him أَنَّهُۥ annahu that [He] لَآ lā (There is) no إِلَٰهَ ilāha god إِلَّآ illā except أَنَا۠ anā Me فَٱعۡبُدُونِ fa-uʿ'budūni so worship Me
wamā arsalnā min qablika min rasūlin illā nūḥī ilayhi annahu lā ilāha illā anā fa-uʿ'budūni
We never sent a messenger before you ˹O Prophet˺ without revealing to him: “There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Me, so worship Me ˹alone˺.”
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they say ٱتَّخَذَ ittakhadha Has taken ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ l-raḥmānu the Most Gracious وَلَدٗاۗ waladan a son سُبۡحَٰنَهُۥۚ sub'ḥānahu Glorified is He بَلۡ bal Nay عِبَادٞ ʿibādun (they are) slaves مُّكۡرَمُونَ muk'ramūna honored
waqālū ittakhadha l-raḥmānu waladan sub'ḥānahu bal ʿibādun muk'ramūna
And they say, “The Most Compassionate has offspring!” Glory be to Him! In fact, those ˹angels˺ are only ˹His˺ honoured servants,
لَا lā Not يَسۡبِقُونَهُۥ yasbiqūnahu they (can) precede Him بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ bil-qawli in word وَهُم wahum and they بِأَمۡرِهِۦ bi-amrihi by His command يَعۡمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna act
lā yasbiqūnahu bil-qawli wahum bi-amrihi yaʿmalūna
who do not speak until He has spoken, ˹only˺ acting at His command.
يَعۡلَمُ yaʿlamu He knows مَا mā what بَيۡنَ bayna (is) before them أَيۡدِيهِمۡ aydīhim (is) before them وَمَا wamā and what خَلۡفَهُمۡ khalfahum (is) behind them وَلَا walā and not يَشۡفَعُونَ yashfaʿūna they (can) intercede إِلَّا illā except لِمَنِ limani for whom ٱرۡتَضَىٰ ir'taḍā He approves وَهُم wahum And they مِّنۡ min from خَشۡيَتِهِۦ khashyatihi fear of Him مُشۡفِقُونَ mush'fiqūna stand in awe
yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wamā khalfahum walā yashfaʿūna illā limani ir'taḍā wahum min khashyatihi mush'fiqūna
He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them. They do not intercede except for whom He approves, and they tremble in awe of Him.
۞ وَمَن waman And whoever يَقُلۡ yaqul says مِنۡهُمۡ min'hum of them إِنِّيٓ innī Indeed, I am إِلَٰهٞ ilāhun a god مِّن min besides Him دُونِهِۦ dūnihi besides Him فَذَٰلِكَ fadhālika Then that نَجۡزِيهِ najzīhi We will recompense جَهَنَّمَۚ jahannama (with) Hell كَذَٰلِكَ kadhālika Thus نَجۡزِي najzī We recompense ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers
waman yaqul min'hum innī ilāhun min dūnihi fadhālika najzīhi jahannama kadhālika najzī l-ẓālimīna
Whoever of them were to say, “I am a god besides Him,” they would be rewarded with Hell by Us. This is how We reward the wrongdoers.
أَوَلَمۡ awalam Do not يَرَ yara see ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who كَفَرُوٓاْ kafarū disbelieved أَنَّ anna that ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ wal-arḍa and the earth كَانَتَا kānatā were رَتۡقٗا ratqan a joined entity فَفَتَقۡنَٰهُمَاۖ fafataqnāhumā then We parted them وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā and We made مِنَ mina from ٱلۡمَآءِ l-māi [the] water كُلَّ kulla every شَيۡءٍ shayin living thing حَيٍّۚ ḥayyin living thing أَفَلَا afalā Then will not يُؤۡمِنُونَ yu'minūna they believe
awalam yara alladhīna kafarū anna l-samāwāti wal-arḍa kānatā ratqan fafataqnāhumā wajaʿalnā mina l-māi kulla shayin ḥayyin afalā yu'minūna
Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?
