بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ al-ḥāqatu The Inevitable Reality
al-ḥāqatu
The Inevitable Hour!
مَا mā What ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ l-ḥāqatu (is) the Inevitable Reality
mā l-ḥāqatu
What is the Inevitable Hour?
وَمَآ wamā And what أَدۡرَىٰكَ adrāka will make you know مَا mā what ٱلۡحَآقَّةُ l-ḥāqatu (is) the Inevitable Reality
wamā adrāka mā l-ḥāqatu
And what will make you realize what the Inevitable Hour is?
كَذَّبَتۡ kadhabat Denied ثَمُودُ thamūdu Thamud وَعَادُۢ waʿādun and Aad بِٱلۡقَارِعَةِ bil-qāriʿati the Striking Calamity
kadhabat thamūdu waʿādun bil-qāriʿati
˹Both˺ Thamûd and ’Ȃd denied the Striking Disaster.
فَأَمَّا fa-ammā So as for ثَمُودُ thamūdu Thamud فَأُهۡلِكُواْ fa-uh'likū they were destroyed بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ bil-ṭāghiyati by the overpowering (blast)
fa-ammā thamūdu fa-uh'likū bil-ṭāghiyati
As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by an overwhelming blast.
وَأَمَّا wa-ammā And as for عَادٞ ʿādun Aad فَأُهۡلِكُواْ fa-uh'likū they were destroyed بِرِيحٖ birīḥin by a wind صَرۡصَرٍ ṣarṣarin screaming عَاتِيَةٖ ʿātiyatin violent
wa-ammā ʿādun fa-uh'likū birīḥin ṣarṣarin ʿātiyatin
And as for ’Ȃd, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind
سَخَّرَهَا sakharahā Which He imposed عَلَيۡهِمۡ ʿalayhim upon them سَبۡعَ sabʿa (for) seven لَيَالٖ layālin nights وَثَمَٰنِيَةَ wathamāniyata and eight أَيَّامٍ ayyāmin days حُسُومٗاۖ ḥusūman (in) succession فَتَرَى fatarā so you would see ٱلۡقَوۡمَ l-qawma the people فِيهَا fīhā therein صَرۡعَىٰ ṣarʿā fallen كَأَنَّهُمۡ ka-annahum as if they were أَعۡجَازُ aʿjāzu trunks نَخۡلٍ nakhlin (of) date-palms خَاوِيَةٖ khāwiyatin hollow
sakharahā ʿalayhim sabʿa layālin wathamāniyata ayyāmin ḥusūman fatarā l-qawma fīhā ṣarʿā ka-annahum aʿjāzu nakhlin khāwiyatin
which Allah unleashed on them non-stop for seven nights and eight days, so that you would have seen its people lying dead like trunks of uprooted palm trees.
فَهَلۡ fahal Then do تَرَىٰ tarā you see لَهُم lahum of them مِّنۢ min any بَاقِيَةٖ bāqiyatin remains
fahal tarā lahum min bāqiyatin
Do you see any of them left alive?
وَجَآءَ wajāa And came فِرۡعَوۡنُ fir'ʿawnu Firaun وَمَن waman and (those) قَبۡلَهُۥ qablahu before him وَٱلۡمُؤۡتَفِكَٰتُ wal-mu'tafikātu and the overturned cities بِٱلۡخَاطِئَةِ bil-khāṭi-ati with sin
wajāa fir'ʿawnu waman qablahu wal-mu'tafikātu bil-khāṭi-ati
Also, Pharaoh and those before him, and ˹the people of˺ the overturned cities ˹of Lot˺ indulged in sin,
فَعَصَوۡاْ faʿaṣaw And they disobeyed رَسُولَ rasūla (the) Messenger رَبِّهِمۡ rabbihim (of) their Lord فَأَخَذَهُمۡ fa-akhadhahum so He seized them أَخۡذَةٗ akhdhatan (with) a seizure رَّابِيَةً rābiyatan exceeding
faʿaṣaw rasūla rabbihim fa-akhadhahum akhdhatan rābiyatan
each disobeying their Lord’s messenger, so He seized them with a crushing grip.
إِنَّا innā Indeed, We لَمَّا lammā when طَغَا ṭaghā overflowed ٱلۡمَآءُ l-māu the water حَمَلۡنَٰكُمۡ ḥamalnākum We carried you فِي fī in ٱلۡجَارِيَةِ l-jāriyati the sailing (ship)
innā lammā ṭaghā l-māu ḥamalnākum fī l-jāriyati
Indeed, when the floodwater had overflowed, We carried you in the floating Ark ˹with Noah˺,
لِنَجۡعَلَهَا linajʿalahā That We might make it لَكُمۡ lakum for you تَذۡكِرَةٗ tadhkiratan a reminder وَتَعِيَهَآ wataʿiyahā and would be conscious of it أُذُنٞ udhunun an ear وَٰعِيَةٞ wāʿiyatun conscious
linajʿalahā lakum tadhkiratan wataʿiyahā udhunun wāʿiyatun
so that We may make this a reminder to you, and that attentive ears may grasp it.
فَإِذَا fa-idhā Then when نُفِخَ nufikha is blown فِي fī in ٱلصُّورِ l-ṣūri the trumpet نَفۡخَةٞ nafkhatun a blast وَٰحِدَةٞ wāḥidatun single
fa-idhā nufikha fī l-ṣūri nafkhatun wāḥidatun
At last, when the Trumpet will be blown with one blast,
وَحُمِلَتِ waḥumilati And are lifted ٱلۡأَرۡضُ l-arḍu the earth وَٱلۡجِبَالُ wal-jibālu and the mountains فَدُكَّتَا fadukkatā and crushed دَكَّةٗ dakkatan (with) a crushing وَٰحِدَةٗ wāḥidatan single
waḥumilati l-arḍu wal-jibālu fadukkatā dakkatan wāḥidatan
and the earth and mountains will be lifted up and crushed with one blow,
فَيَوۡمَئِذٖ fayawma-idhin Then (on) that Day وَقَعَتِ waqaʿati will occur ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ l-wāqiʿatu the Occurrence
fayawma-idhin waqaʿati l-wāqiʿatu
on that Day the Inevitable Event will have come to pass.
وَٱنشَقَّتِ wa-inshaqqati And will split ٱلسَّمَآءُ l-samāu the heaven فَهِيَ fahiya so it يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin (is on) that Day وَاهِيَةٞ wāhiyatun frail
wa-inshaqqati l-samāu fahiya yawma-idhin wāhiyatun
The sky will then be so torn that it will be frail,
وَٱلۡمَلَكُ wal-malaku And the Angels عَلَىٰٓ ʿalā (will be) on أَرۡجَآئِهَاۚ arjāihā its edges وَيَحۡمِلُ wayaḥmilu and will bear عَرۡشَ ʿarsha (the) Throne رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord فَوۡقَهُمۡ fawqahum above them يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin that Day ثَمَٰنِيَةٞ thamāniyatun eight
wal-malaku ʿalā arjāihā wayaḥmilu ʿarsha rabbika fawqahum yawma-idhin thamāniyatun
with the angels on its sides. On that Day eight ˹mighty angels˺ will bear the Throne of your Lord above them.
يَوۡمَئِذٖ yawma-idhin That Day تُعۡرَضُونَ tuʿ'raḍūna you will be exhibited لَا lā not تَخۡفَىٰ takhfā will be hidden مِنكُمۡ minkum among you خَافِيَةٞ khāfiyatun any secret
yawma-idhin tuʿ'raḍūna lā takhfā minkum khāfiyatun
You will then be presented ˹before Him for judgment˺, and none of your secrets will stay hidden.
فَأَمَّا fa-ammā Then as for مَنۡ man (him) who أُوتِيَ ūtiya is given كِتَٰبَهُۥ kitābahu his record بِيَمِينِهِۦ biyamīnihi in his right hand فَيَقُولُ fayaqūlu will say هَآؤُمُ hāumu Here ٱقۡرَءُواْ iq'raū read كِتَٰبِيَهۡ kitābiyah my record
fa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu biyamīnihi fayaqūlu hāumu iq'raū kitābiyah
As for those given their records in their right hand, they will cry ˹happily˺, “Here ˹everyone˺! Read my record!
إِنِّي innī Indeed, I ظَنَنتُ ẓanantu was certain أَنِّي annī that I مُلَٰقٍ mulāqin (will) meet حِسَابِيَهۡ ḥisābiyah my account
innī ẓanantu annī mulāqin ḥisābiyah
I surely knew I would face my reckoning.”
فَهُوَ fahuwa So he فِي fī (will be) in عِيشَةٖ ʿīshatin a life رَّاضِيَةٖ rāḍiyatin pleasant
fahuwa fī ʿīshatin rāḍiyatin
They will be in a life of bliss,
فِي fī In جَنَّةٍ jannatin a Garden عَالِيَةٖ ʿāliyatin elevated
fī jannatin ʿāliyatin
in an elevated Garden,
قُطُوفُهَا quṭūfuhā Its clusters of fruits دَانِيَةٞ dāniyatun hanging near
quṭūfuhā dāniyatun
whose fruit will hang within reach.
كُلُواْ kulū Eat وَٱشۡرَبُواْ wa-ish'rabū and drink هَنِيٓـَٔۢا hanīan (in) satisfaction بِمَآ bimā for what أَسۡلَفۡتُمۡ aslaftum you sent before you فِي fī in ٱلۡأَيَّامِ l-ayāmi the days ٱلۡخَالِيَةِ l-khāliyati past
kulū wa-ish'rabū hanīan bimā aslaftum fī l-ayāmi l-khāliyati
˹They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink joyfully for what you did in the days gone by.”
وَأَمَّا wa-ammā But as for مَنۡ man (him) who أُوتِيَ ūtiya is given كِتَٰبَهُۥ kitābahu his record بِشِمَالِهِۦ bishimālihi in his left hand فَيَقُولُ fayaqūlu will say يَٰلَيۡتَنِي yālaytanī O! I wish لَمۡ lam not أُوتَ ūta I had been given كِتَٰبِيَهۡ kitābiyah my record
wa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu bishimālihi fayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ūta kitābiyah
And as for those given their record in their left hand, they will cry ˹bitterly˺, “I wish I had not been given my record,
وَلَمۡ walam And not أَدۡرِ adri I had known مَا mā what حِسَابِيَهۡ ḥisābiyah (is) my account
walam adri mā ḥisābiyah
nor known anything of my reckoning!
يَٰلَيۡتَهَا yālaytahā O! I wish it كَانَتِ kānati had been ٱلۡقَاضِيَةَ l-qāḍiyata the end
yālaytahā kānati l-qāḍiyata
I wish death was the end!
مَآ mā Not أَغۡنَىٰ aghnā has availed عَنِّي ʿannī me مَالِيَهۡۜ māliyah my wealth
mā aghnā ʿannī māliyah
My wealth has not benefited me!
هَلَكَ halaka Is gone عَنِّي ʿannī from me سُلۡطَٰنِيَهۡ sul'ṭāniyah my authority
halaka ʿannī sul'ṭāniyah
My authority has been stripped from me.”
خُذُوهُ khudhūhu Seize him فَغُلُّوهُ faghullūhu and shackle him
khudhūhu faghullūhu
˹It will be said,˺ “Seize and shackle them,
