بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
نٓۚ noon Nun وَٱلۡقَلَمِ wal-qalami By the pen وَمَا wamā and what يَسۡطُرُونَ yasṭurūna they write
noon wal-qalami wamā yasṭurūna
Nũn. By the pen and what everyone writes!
مَآ mā Not أَنتَ anta you (are) بِنِعۡمَةِ biniʿ'mati by (the) Grace رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord بِمَجۡنُونٖ bimajnūnin a madman
mā anta biniʿ'mati rabbika bimajnūnin
By the grace of your Lord, you ˹O Prophet˺ are not insane.
وَإِنَّ wa-inna And indeed لَكَ laka for you لَأَجۡرًا la-ajran surely (is) a reward غَيۡرَ ghayra without مَمۡنُونٖ mamnūnin end
wa-inna laka la-ajran ghayra mamnūnin
You will certainly have a never-ending reward.
وَإِنَّكَ wa-innaka And indeed, you لَعَلَىٰ laʿalā surely (are) خُلُقٍ khuluqin (of) a moral character عَظِيمٖ ʿaẓīmin great
wa-innaka laʿalā khuluqin ʿaẓīmin
And you are truly ˹a man˺ of outstanding character.
فَسَتُبۡصِرُ fasatub'ṣiru So you will see وَيُبۡصِرُونَ wayub'ṣirūna and they will see
fasatub'ṣiru wayub'ṣirūna
Soon you and the pagans will see,
بِأَييِّكُمُ bi-ayyikumu Which of you ٱلۡمَفۡتُونُ l-maftūnu (is) the afflicted one
bi-ayyikumu l-maftūnu
which of you is mad.
إِنَّ inna Indeed رَبَّكَ rabbaka your Lord هُوَ huwa He أَعۡلَمُ aʿlamu (is) most knowing بِمَن biman of (he) who ضَلَّ ḍalla has strayed عَن ʿan from سَبِيلِهِۦ sabīlihi His way وَهُوَ wahuwa and He أَعۡلَمُ aʿlamu (is) most knowing بِٱلۡمُهۡتَدِينَ bil-muh'tadīna of the guided ones
inna rabbaka huwa aʿlamu biman ḍalla ʿan sabīlihi wahuwa aʿlamu bil-muh'tadīna
Surely your Lord ˹alone˺ knows best who has strayed from His Way and who is ˹rightly˺ guided.
فَلَا falā So (do) not تُطِعِ tuṭiʿi obey ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ l-mukadhibīna the deniers
falā tuṭiʿi l-mukadhibīna
So do not give in to the deniers.
وَدُّواْ waddū They wish لَوۡ law that تُدۡهِنُ tud'hinu you should compromise فَيُدۡهِنُونَ fayud'hinūna so they would compromise
waddū law tud'hinu fayud'hinūna
They wish you would compromise so they would yield ˹to you˺.
وَلَا walā And (do) not تُطِعۡ tuṭiʿ obey كُلَّ kulla every حَلَّافٖ ḥallāfin habitual swearer مَّهِينٍ mahīnin worthless
walā tuṭiʿ kulla ḥallāfin mahīnin
And do not obey the despicable, vain oath-taker,
هَمَّازٖ hammāzin Defamer مَّشَّآءِۭ mashāin going about بِنَمِيمٖ binamīmin with malicious gossip
hammāzin mashāin binamīmin
slanderer, gossip-monger,
مَّنَّاعٖ mannāʿin A preventer لِّلۡخَيۡرِ lil'khayri of (the) good مُعۡتَدٍ muʿ'tadin transgressor أَثِيمٍ athīmin sinful
mannāʿin lil'khayri muʿ'tadin athīmin
withholder of good, transgressor, evildoer,
عُتُلِّۭ ʿutullin Cruel بَعۡدَ baʿda after ذَٰلِكَ dhālika (all) that زَنِيمٍ zanīmin utterly useless
ʿutullin baʿda dhālika zanīmin
brute, and—on top of all that—an illegitimate child.
أَن an Because كَانَ kāna (he) is ذَا dhā a possessor مَالٖ mālin (of) wealth وَبَنِينَ wabanīna and children
an kāna dhā mālin wabanīna
Now, ˹simply˺ because he has been blessed with ˹abundant˺ wealth and children,
إِذَا idhā When تُتۡلَىٰ tut'lā are recited عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi to him ءَايَٰتُنَا āyātunā Our Verses قَالَ qāla he says أَسَٰطِيرُ asāṭīru Stories ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ l-awalīna (of) the former (people)
idhā tut'lā ʿalayhi āyātunā qāla asāṭīru l-awalīna
whenever Our revelations are recited to him, he says, “Ancient fables!”
سَنَسِمُهُۥ sanasimuhu We will brand him عَلَى ʿalā on ٱلۡخُرۡطُومِ l-khur'ṭūmi the snout
sanasimuhu ʿalā l-khur'ṭūmi
We will soon mark his snout.
إِنَّا innā Indeed, We بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ balawnāhum have tried them كَمَا kamā as بَلَوۡنَآ balawnā We tried أَصۡحَٰبَ aṣḥāba (the) companions ٱلۡجَنَّةِ l-janati (of) the garden إِذۡ idh when أَقۡسَمُواْ aqsamū they swore لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا layaṣrimunnahā to pluck its fruit مُصۡبِحِينَ muṣ'biḥīna (in the) morning
innā balawnāhum kamā balawnā aṣḥāba l-janati idh aqsamū layaṣrimunnahā muṣ'biḥīna
Indeed, We have tested those ˹Meccans˺ as We tested the owners of the garden—when they swore they would surely harvest ˹all˺ its fruit in the early morning,
وَلَا walā And not يَسۡتَثۡنُونَ yastathnūna making exception
walā yastathnūna
leaving no thought for Allah’s Will.
فَطَافَ faṭāfa So there came عَلَيۡهَا ʿalayhā upon it طَآئِفٞ ṭāifun a visitation مِّن min from رَّبِّكَ rabbika your Lord وَهُمۡ wahum while they نَآئِمُونَ nāimūna were asleep
faṭāfa ʿalayhā ṭāifun min rabbika wahum nāimūna
Then it was struck by a torment from your Lord while they slept,
فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ fa-aṣbaḥat So it became كَٱلصَّرِيمِ kal-ṣarīmi as if reaped
fa-aṣbaḥat kal-ṣarīmi
so it was reduced to ashes.
فَتَنَادَوۡاْ fatanādaw And they called one another مُصۡبِحِينَ muṣ'biḥīna (at) morning
fatanādaw muṣ'biḥīna
Then by daybreak they called out to each other,
أَنِ ani That ٱغۡدُواْ igh'dū Go early عَلَىٰ ʿalā to حَرۡثِكُمۡ ḥarthikum your crop إِن in if كُنتُمۡ kuntum you would صَٰرِمِينَ ṣārimīna pluck (the) fruit
ani igh'dū ʿalā ḥarthikum in kuntum ṣārimīna
˹saying,˺ “Go early to your harvest, if you want to pick ˹all˺ the fruit.”
فَٱنطَلَقُواْ fa-inṭalaqū So they went وَهُمۡ wahum while they يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ yatakhāfatūna lowered (their) voices
fa-inṭalaqū wahum yatakhāfatūna
So they went off, whispering to one another,
أَن an That لَّا lā Not يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا yadkhulannahā will enter it ٱلۡيَوۡمَ l-yawma today عَلَيۡكُم ʿalaykum upon you مِّسۡكِينٞ mis'kīnun any poor person
an lā yadkhulannahā l-yawma ʿalaykum mis'kīnun
“Do not let any poor person enter your garden today.”
وَغَدَوۡاْ waghadaw And they went early عَلَىٰ ʿalā with حَرۡدٖ ḥardin determination قَٰدِرِينَ qādirīna able
waghadaw ʿalā ḥardin qādirīna
And they proceeded early, totally fixated on their purpose.
فَلَمَّا falammā But when رَأَوۡهَا ra-awhā they saw it قَالُوٓاْ qālū they said إِنَّا innā Indeed, we لَضَآلُّونَ laḍāllūna (are) surely lost
falammā ra-awhā qālū innā laḍāllūna
But when they saw it ˹devastated˺, they cried, “We must have lost ˹our˺ way!
بَلۡ bal Nay نَحۡنُ naḥnu We مَحۡرُومُونَ maḥrūmūna (are) deprived
bal naḥnu maḥrūmūna
In fact, we have been deprived ˹of our livelihood˺.”
قَالَ qāla Said أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ awsaṭuhum (the) most moderate of them أَلَمۡ alam Did not أَقُل aqul I tell لَّكُمۡ lakum you لَوۡلَا lawlā 'Why not تُسَبِّحُونَ tusabbiḥūna you glorify (Allah)?'
qāla awsaṭuhum alam aqul lakum lawlā tusabbiḥūna
The most sensible of them said, “Did I not urge you to say, ‘Allah willing.’?”
قَالُواْ qālū They said سُبۡحَٰنَ sub'ḥāna Glory be رَبِّنَآ rabbinā (to) our Lord إِنَّا innā Indeed, we كُنَّا kunnā [we] were ظَٰلِمِينَ ẓālimīna wrongdoers
qālū sub'ḥāna rabbinā innā kunnā ẓālimīna
They replied, “Glory be to our Lord! We have truly been wrongdoers.”
فَأَقۡبَلَ fa-aqbala Then approached بَعۡضُهُمۡ baʿḍuhum some of them عَلَىٰ ʿalā to بَعۡضٖ baʿḍin others يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ yatalāwamūna blaming each other
fa-aqbala baʿḍuhum ʿalā baʿḍin yatalāwamūna
Then they turned on each other, throwing blame.
