Al-Hijr

الٓرۚalif-lam-raAlif Laam Raتِلۡكَtil'kaTheseءَايَٰتُāyātu(are) the Versesٱلۡكِتَٰبِl-kitābi(of) the Bookوَقُرۡءَانٖwaqur'āninand Quranمُّبِينٖmubīninclear

alif-lam-ra til'ka āyātu l-kitābi waqur'ānin mubīnin

Alif-Lãm-Ra. These are the verses of the Book; the clear Quran.

رُّبَمَاrubamāPerhapsيَوَدُّyawadduwill wishٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelievedلَوۡlawifكَانُواْkānūthey had beenمُسۡلِمِينَmus'limīnaMuslims

rubamā yawaddu alladhīna kafarū law kānū mus'limīna

˹The day will come when˺ the disbelievers will certainly wish they had submitted ˹to Allah˺.

ذَرۡهُمۡdharhumLeave themيَأۡكُلُواْyakulū(to) eatوَيَتَمَتَّعُواْwayatamattaʿūand enjoyوَيُلۡهِهِمُwayul'hihimuand diverted themٱلۡأَمَلُۖl-amaluthe hopeفَسَوۡفَfasawfathen soonيَعۡلَمُونَyaʿlamūnathey will come to know

dharhum yakulū wayatamattaʿū wayul'hihimu l-amalu fasawfa yaʿlamūna

˹So˺ let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by ˹false˺ hope, for they will soon know.

وَمَآwamāAnd notأَهۡلَكۡنَاahlaknāWe destroyedمِنminanyقَرۡيَةٍqaryatintownإِلَّاillābutوَلَهَاwalahā(there was) for itكِتَابٞkitābuna decreeمَّعۡلُومٞmaʿlūmunknown

wamā ahlaknā min qaryatin illā walahā kitābun maʿlūmun

We have never destroyed a society without a destined term.

مَّاmāNotتَسۡبِقُtasbiqu(can) advanceمِنۡminanyأُمَّةٍummatinnationأَجَلَهَاajalahāits termوَمَاwamāand notيَسۡتَـٔۡخِرُونَyastakhirūna(can) delay it

mā tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahā wamā yastakhirūna

No people can advance their doom, nor can they delay it.

وَقَالُواْwaqālūAnd they sayيَٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāO youٱلَّذِيalladhī(to) whomنُزِّلَnuzzilahas been sent downعَلَيۡهِʿalayhi[on him]ٱلذِّكۡرُl-dhik'ruthe Reminderإِنَّكَinnakaindeed, youلَمَجۡنُونٞlamajnūnun(are) surely mad

waqālū yāayyuhā alladhī nuzzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru innaka lamajnūnun

They say, “O you to whom the Reminder is revealed! You must be insane!

لَّوۡlawWhyمَاmānotتَأۡتِينَاtatīnāyou bring to usبِٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِbil-malāikatithe Angelsإِنinifكُنتَkuntayou areمِنَminaofٱلصَّٰدِقِينَl-ṣādiqīnathe truthful

law mā tatīnā bil-malāikati in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīna

Why do you not bring us the angels, if what you say is true?”

مَاmāNotنُنَزِّلُnunazziluWe send downٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَl-malāikatathe Angelsإِلَّاillāexceptبِٱلۡحَقِّbil-ḥaqiwith the truthوَمَاwamāand notكَانُوٓاْkānūthey would beإِذٗاidhanthenمُّنظَرِينَmunẓarīnagiven respite

mā nunazzilu l-malāikata illā bil-ḥaqi wamā kānū idhan munẓarīna

We do not send the angels down except for a just cause, and then ˹the end of˺ the disbelievers will not be delayed.

إِنَّاinnāIndeed, WeنَحۡنُnaḥnuWeنَزَّلۡنَاnazzalnāhave sent downٱلذِّكۡرَl-dhik'rathe Reminderوَإِنَّاwa-innāand indeed, Weلَهُۥlahuof itلَحَٰفِظُونَlaḥāfiẓūna(are) surely Guardians

innā naḥnu nazzalnā l-dhik'ra wa-innā lahu laḥāfiẓūna

It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder, and it is certainly We Who will preserve it.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd certainlyأَرۡسَلۡنَاarsalnāWe (had) sentمِنminbefore youقَبۡلِكَqablikabefore youفِيfīinشِيَعِshiyaʿithe sectsٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

walaqad arsalnā min qablika fī shiyaʿi l-awalīna

Indeed, We sent messengers before you ˹O Prophet˺ among the groups of early peoples,

وَمَاwamāAnd notيَأۡتِيهِمyatīhimcame to themمِّنminanyرَّسُولٍrasūlinMessengerإِلَّاillābutكَانُواْkānūthey didبِهِۦbihiat himيَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَyastahziūnamock

wamā yatīhim min rasūlin illā kānū bihi yastahziūna

but no messenger ever came to them without being mocked.

كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَسۡلُكُهُۥnaslukuhuWe let it enterفِيfīinقُلُوبِqulūbi(the) heartsٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَl-muj'rimīna(of) the criminals

kadhālika naslukuhu fī qulūbi l-muj'rimīna

This is how We allow disbelief ˹to steep˺ into the hearts of the wicked.

لَاlāNotيُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believeبِهِۦbihiin itوَقَدۡwaqadand verilyخَلَتۡkhalathave passedسُنَّةُsunnatuthe way(s)ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīna(of) the former (people)

lā yu'minūna bihi waqad khalat sunnatu l-awalīna

They would not believe in this ˹Quran˺ despite the ˹many˺ examples of those ˹destroyed˺ before.

وَلَوۡwalawAnd (even) ifفَتَحۡنَاfataḥnāWe openedعَلَيۡهِمʿalayhimto themبَابٗاbābana gateمِّنَminafromٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heavenفَظَلُّواْfaẓallūand they were to continueفِيهِfīhithereinيَعۡرُجُونَyaʿrujūna(to) ascend

walaw fataḥnā ʿalayhim bāban mina l-samāi faẓallū fīhi yaʿrujūna

And even if We opened for them a gate to heaven, through which they continued to ascend,

لَقَالُوٓاْlaqālūThey would surely sayإِنَّمَاinnamāOnlyسُكِّرَتۡsukkirathave been dazzledأَبۡصَٰرُنَاabṣārunāour eyesبَلۡbalNayنَحۡنُnaḥnuweقَوۡمٞqawmun(are) a peopleمَّسۡحُورُونَmasḥūrūnabewitched

laqālū innamā sukkirat abṣārunā bal naḥnu qawmun masḥūrūna

still they would say, “Our eyes have truly been dazzled! In fact, we must have been bewitched.”

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd verilyجَعَلۡنَاjaʿalnāWe have placedفِيfīinٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe heavensبُرُوجٗاburūjanconstellationsوَزَيَّنَّٰهَاwazayyannāhāand We have beautified itلِلنَّٰظِرِينَlilnnāẓirīnafor the observers

walaqad jaʿalnā fī l-samāi burūjan wazayyannāhā lilnnāẓirīna

Indeed, We have placed constellations in the sky, and adorned it for all to see.

وَحَفِظۡنَٰهَاwaḥafiẓ'nāhāAnd We have protected itمِنminfromكُلِّkullieveryشَيۡطَٰنٖshayṭānindevilرَّجِيمٍrajīminaccursed

waḥafiẓ'nāhā min kulli shayṭānin rajīmin

And We protected it from every accursed devil,

إِلَّاillāExceptمَنِmani(one) whoٱسۡتَرَقَis'taraqastealsٱلسَّمۡعَl-samʿathe hearingفَأَتۡبَعَهُۥfa-atbaʿahuthen follows himشِهَابٞshihābuna burning flameمُّبِينٞmubīnunclear

illā mani is'taraqa l-samʿa fa-atbaʿahu shihābun mubīnun

except the one eavesdropping, who is then pursued by a visible flare.

وَٱلۡأَرۡضَwal-arḍaAnd the earthمَدَدۡنَٰهَاmadadnāhāWe have spread itوَأَلۡقَيۡنَاwa-alqaynāand [We] castفِيهَاfīhāthereinرَوَٰسِيَrawāsiyafirm mountainsوَأَنۢبَتۡنَاwa-anbatnāand [We] caused to growفِيهَاfīhāthereinمِنminofكُلِّkullieveryشَيۡءٖshayinthingمَّوۡزُونٖmawzūninwell-balanced

wal-arḍa madadnāhā wa-alqaynā fīhā rawāsiya wa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli shayin mawzūnin

As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and caused everything to grow there in perfect balance.

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We have madeلَكُمۡlakumfor youفِيهَاfīhāthereinمَعَٰيِشَmaʿāyishameans of livingوَمَنwamanand whomلَّسۡتُمۡlastumyou are notلَهُۥlahufor himبِرَٰزِقِينَbirāziqīnaproviders

wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha waman lastum lahu birāziqīna

And We made in it means of sustenance for you and others, who you do not provide for.

وَإِنwa-inAnd notمِّنmin(is) anyشَيۡءٍshayinthingإِلَّاillābutعِندَنَاʿindanāwith Usخَزَآئِنُهُۥkhazāinuhu(are) its treasuresوَمَاwamāand notنُنَزِّلُهُۥٓnunazziluhuWe send it downإِلَّاillāexceptبِقَدَرٖbiqadarinin a measureمَّعۡلُومٖmaʿlūminknown

wa-in min shayin illā ʿindanā khazāinuhu wamā nunazziluhu illā biqadarin maʿlūmin

There is not any means ˹of sustenance˺ whose reserves We do not hold, only bringing it forth in precise measure.

وَأَرۡسَلۡنَاwa-arsalnāAnd We have sentٱلرِّيَٰحَl-riyāḥathe windsلَوَٰقِحَlawāqiḥafertilizingفَأَنزَلۡنَاfa-anzalnāand We sent downمِنَminafromٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe skyمَآءٗmāanwaterفَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُمُوهُfa-asqaynākumūhuand We gave it to you to drinkوَمَآwamāAnd notأَنتُمۡantumyouلَهُۥlahuof itبِخَٰزِنِينَbikhāzinīna(are) retainers

wa-arsalnā l-riyāḥa lawāqiḥa fa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-asqaynākumūhu wamā antum lahu bikhāzinīna

We send fertilizing winds, and bring down rain from the sky for you to drink. It is not you who hold its reserves.

وَإِنَّاwa-innāAnd indeed, Weلَنَحۡنُlanaḥnusurely [We]نُحۡيِۦnuḥ'yīWe give lifeوَنُمِيتُwanumītuand We cause deathوَنَحۡنُwanaḥnuand Weٱلۡوَٰرِثُونَl-wārithūna(are) the Inheritors

wa-innā lanaḥnu nuḥ'yī wanumītu wanaḥnu l-wārithūna

Surely it is We Who give life and cause death. And We are the ˹Eternal˺ Successor.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd verilyعَلِمۡنَاʿalim'nāWe knowٱلۡمُسۡتَقۡدِمِينَl-mus'taqdimīnathe preceding onesمِنكُمۡminkumamong youوَلَقَدۡwalaqadand verilyعَلِمۡنَاʿalim'nāWe knowٱلۡمُسۡتَـٔۡخِرِينَl-mus'takhirīnathe later ones

walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'taqdimīna minkum walaqad ʿalim'nā l-mus'takhirīna

We certainly know those who have gone before you and those who will come after ˹you˺.

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedرَبَّكَrabbakayour LordهُوَhuwaHeيَحۡشُرُهُمۡۚyaḥshuruhumwill gather themإِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, Heحَكِيمٌḥakīmun(is) All-WiseعَلِيمٞʿalīmunAll-Knowing

wa-inna rabbaka huwa yaḥshuruhum innahu ḥakīmun ʿalīmun

Surely your Lord ˹alone˺ will gather them together ˹for judgment˺. He is truly All-Wise, All-Knowing.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd verilyخَلَقۡنَاkhalaqnāWe createdٱلۡإِنسَٰنَl-insānahumankindمِنmin(out) ofصَلۡصَٰلٖṣalṣālinsounding clayمِّنۡminfromحَمَإٖḥama-inblack mudمَّسۡنُونٖmasnūninaltered

walaqad khalaqnā l-insāna min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūnin

Indeed, We created man from sounding clay moulded from black mud.

وَٱلۡجَآنَّwal-jānaAnd the jinnخَلَقۡنَٰهُkhalaqnāhuWe created itمِنminbeforeقَبۡلُqablubeforeمِنminfromنَّارِnārifireٱلسَّمُومِl-samūmiscorching

wal-jāna khalaqnāhu min qablu min nāri l-samūmi

As for the jinn, We created them earlier from smokeless fire.

وَإِذۡwa-idhAnd whenقَالَqālayour Lord saidرَبُّكَrabbukayour Lord saidلِلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِlil'malāikatito the AngelsإِنِّيinnīIndeed, Iخَٰلِقُۢkhāliqun(will) createبَشَرٗاbasharana human beingمِّنmin(out) ofصَلۡصَٰلٖṣalṣālinclayمِّنۡminfromحَمَإٖḥama-inblack mudمَّسۡنُونٖmasnūninaltered

wa-idh qāla rabbuka lil'malāikati innī khāliqun basharan min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūnin

˹Remember, O Prophet˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being from sounding clay moulded from black mud.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo, whenسَوَّيۡتُهُۥsawwaytuhuI have fashioned himوَنَفَخۡتُwanafakhtuand [I] breathedفِيهِfīhiinto himمِنminofرُّوحِيrūḥīMy spiritفَقَعُواْfaqaʿūthen fall downلَهُۥlahuto himسَٰجِدِينَsājidīnaprostrating

fa-idhā sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu fīhi min rūḥī faqaʿū lahu sājidīna

So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own ˹creation˺ breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”

فَسَجَدَfasajadaSo prostratedٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angelsكُلُّهُمۡkulluhumall of themأَجۡمَعُونَajmaʿūnatogether

fasajada l-malāikatu kulluhum ajmaʿūna

So the angels prostrated all together—
