الٓرۚalif-lam-raAlif Laam RaكِتَٰبٌkitābunA Bookأَنزَلۡنَٰهُanzalnāhuwhich We have revealedإِلَيۡكَilaykato youلِتُخۡرِجَlitukh'rijaso that you may bring outٱلنَّاسَl-nāsathe mankindمِنَminafromٱلظُّلُمَٰتِl-ẓulumātithe darkness[es]إِلَىilātoٱلنُّورِl-nūrithe lightبِإِذۡنِbi-idh'niby the permissionرَبِّهِمۡrabbihim(of) their Lordإِلَىٰilātoصِرَٰطِṣirāṭithe Pathٱلۡعَزِيزِl-ʿazīzi(of) the All-Mightyٱلۡحَمِيدِl-ḥamīdithe Praiseworthy

alif-lam-ra kitābun anzalnāhu ilayka litukh'rija l-nāsa mina l-ẓulumāti ilā l-nūri bi-idh'ni rabbihim ilā ṣirāṭi l-ʿazīzi l-ḥamīdi

Alif-Lãm-Ra. ˹This is˺ a Book which We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ so that you may lead people out of darkness and into light, by the Will of their Lord, to the Path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy—

ٱللَّهِal-lahiAllahٱلَّذِيalladhī(is) the Oneلَهُۥlahuto Him (belongs)مَاmāwhateverفِيfī(is) inٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَمَاwamāand whateverفِيfī(is) inٱلۡأَرۡضِۗl-arḍithe earthوَوَيۡلٞwawaylunAnd woeلِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnato the disbelieversمِنۡminfromعَذَابٖʿadhābinthe punishmentشَدِيدٍshadīdinsevere

al-lahi alladhī lahu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wawaylun lil'kāfirīna min ʿadhābin shadīdin

Allah, to Whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers because of a severe torment!

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoيَسۡتَحِبُّونَyastaḥibbūnalove moreٱلۡحَيَوٰةَl-ḥayatathe lifeٱلدُّنۡيَاl-dun'yā(of) the worldعَلَىʿalāthanٱلۡأٓخِرَةِl-ākhiratithe Hereafterوَيَصُدُّونَwayaṣuddūnaand hinderعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِsabīli(the) Pathٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahوَيَبۡغُونَهَاwayabghūnahāand seek in itعِوَجًاۚʿiwajancrookednessأُوْلَٰٓئِكَulāikathoseفِيfī[in]ضَلَٰلِۭḍalālin(are) far astrayبَعِيدٖbaʿīdin(are) far astray

alladhīna yastaḥibbūna l-ḥayata l-dun'yā ʿalā l-ākhirati wayaṣuddūna ʿan sabīli l-lahi wayabghūnahā ʿiwajan ulāika fī ḍalālin baʿīdin

˹They are˺ the ones who favour the life of this world over the Hereafter and hinder ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah, striving to make it ˹appear˺ crooked. It is they who have gone far astray.

وَمَآwamāAnd notأَرۡسَلۡنَاarsalnāWe sentمِنminanyرَّسُولٍrasūlinMessengerإِلَّاillāexceptبِلِسَانِbilisāniwith the languageقَوۡمِهِۦqawmihi(of) his peopleلِيُبَيِّنَliyubayyinaso that he might make clearلَهُمۡۖlahumfor themفَيُضِلُّfayuḍilluThen Allah lets go astrayٱللَّهُl-lahuThen Allah lets go astrayمَنmanwhomيَشَآءُyashāuHe willsوَيَهۡدِيwayahdīand guidesمَنmanwhomيَشَآءُۚyashāuHe willsوَهُوَwahuwaAnd Heٱلۡعَزِيزُl-ʿazīzu(is) the All-Mightyٱلۡحَكِيمُl-ḥakīmuthe All-Wise

wamā arsalnā min rasūlin illā bilisāni qawmihi liyubayyina lahum fayuḍillu l-lahu man yashāu wayahdī man yashāu wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

We have not sent a messenger except in the language of his people to clarify ˹the message˺ for them. Then Allah leaves whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.

وَلَقَدۡwalaqadAnd verilyأَرۡسَلۡنَاarsalnāWe sentمُوسَىٰmūsāMusaبِـَٔايَٰتِنَآbiāyātināwith Our SignsأَنۡanthatأَخۡرِجۡakhrijBring outقَوۡمَكَqawmakayour peopleمِنَminafromٱلظُّلُمَٰتِl-ẓulumātithe darkness[es]إِلَىilātoٱلنُّورِl-nūrithe lightوَذَكِّرۡهُمwadhakkir'humAnd remind themبِأَيَّىٰمِbi-ayyāmiof the daysٱللَّهِۚl-lahi(of) AllahإِنَّinnaIndeedفِيfīinذَٰلِكَdhālikathatلَأٓيَٰتٖlaāyātinsurely (are) the signsلِّكُلِّlikullifor everyoneصَبَّارٖṣabbārinpatientشَكُورٖshakūrinand thankful

walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā an akhrij qawmaka mina l-ẓulumāti ilā l-nūri wadhakkir'hum bi-ayyāmi l-lahi inna fī dhālika laāyātin likulli ṣabbārin shakūrin

Indeed, We sent Moses with Our signs, ˹ordering him,˺ “Lead your people out of darkness and into light, and remind them of Allah’s days ˹of favour˺.” Surely in this are signs for whoever is steadfast, grateful.

وَإِذۡwa-idhAnd whenقَالَqālasaidمُوسَىٰmūsāMusaلِقَوۡمِهِliqawmihito his peopleٱذۡكُرُواْudh'kurūRememberنِعۡمَةَniʿ'mata(the) Favor of Allahٱللَّهِl-lahi(the) Favor of Allahعَلَيۡكُمۡʿalaykumupon youإِذۡidhwhenأَنجَىٰكُمanjākumHe saved youمِّنۡminfromءَالِāli(the) peopleفِرۡعَوۡنَfir'ʿawna(of) Firaunيَسُومُونَكُمۡyasūmūnakumthey were afflicting youسُوٓءَsūa(with) evilٱلۡعَذَابِl-ʿadhābitormentوَيُذَبِّحُونَwayudhabbiḥūnaand were slaughteringأَبۡنَآءَكُمۡabnāakumyour sonsوَيَسۡتَحۡيُونَwayastaḥyūnaand letting liveنِسَآءَكُمۡۚnisāakumyour womenوَفِيwafīAnd inذَٰلِكُمdhālikumthatبَلَآءٞbalāon(was) a trialمِّنminfromرَّبِّكُمۡrabbikumyour Lordعَظِيمٞʿaẓīmungreat

wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi udh'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi ʿalaykum idh anjākum min āli fir'ʿawna yasūmūnakum sūa l-ʿadhābi wayudhabbiḥūna abnāakum wayastaḥyūna nisāakum wafī dhālikum balāon min rabbikum ʿaẓīmun

˹Consider˺ when Moses said to his people, “Remember Allah’s favour upon you when He rescued you from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with dreadful torment—slaughtering your sons and keeping your women. That was a severe test from your Lord.

وَإِذۡwa-idhAnd whenتَأَذَّنَta-adhanaproclaimedرَبُّكُمۡrabbukumyour Lordلَئِنla-inIfشَكَرۡتُمۡshakartumyou are thankfulلَأَزِيدَنَّكُمۡۖla-azīdannakumsurely I will increase youوَلَئِنwala-inbut ifكَفَرۡتُمۡkafartumyou are ungratefulإِنَّinnaindeedعَذَابِيʿadhābīMy punishmentلَشَدِيدٞlashadīdun(is) surely severe

wa-idh ta-adhana rabbukum la-in shakartum la-azīdannakum wala-in kafartum inna ʿadhābī lashadīdun

And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.’”

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidمُوسَىٰٓmūsāMusaإِنinIfتَكۡفُرُوٓاْtakfurūyou disbelieveأَنتُمۡantumyouوَمَنwamanand whoeverفِيfī(is) inٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earthجَمِيعٗاjamīʿanallفَإِنَّfa-innathen indeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahلَغَنِيٌّlaghaniyyuncertainly (is) Free of needحَمِيدٌḥamīdunPraiseworthy

waqāla mūsā in takfurū antum waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan fa-inna l-laha laghaniyyun ḥamīdun

Moses added, “If you along with everyone on earth were to be ungrateful, then ˹know that˺ Allah is indeed Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.”

أَلَمۡalamHas notيَأۡتِكُمۡyatikumcome to youنَبَؤُاْnaba-u(the) newsٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those whoمِنmin(were) before youقَبۡلِكُمۡqablikum(were) before youقَوۡمِqawmithe peopleنُوحٖnūḥinof Nuhوَعَادٖwaʿādinand Aadوَثَمُودَwathamūdaand Thamudوَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaand those whoمِنۢmin(were) after themبَعۡدِهِمۡbaʿdihim(were) after themلَاlāNoneيَعۡلَمُهُمۡyaʿlamuhumknows themإِلَّاillāexceptٱللَّهُۚl-lahuAllahجَآءَتۡهُمۡjāathumCame to themرُسُلُهُمrusuluhumtheir Messengersبِٱلۡبَيِّنَٰتِbil-bayinātiwith clear proofsفَرَدُّوٓاْfaraddūbut they returnedأَيۡدِيَهُمۡaydiyahumtheir handsفِيٓfīinأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡafwāhihimtheir mouthsوَقَالُوٓاْwaqālūand they saidإِنَّاinnāIndeed weكَفَرۡنَاkafarnā[we] disbelieveبِمَآbimāin whatأُرۡسِلۡتُمur'sil'tumyou have been sentبِهِۦbihiwith [it]وَإِنَّاwa-innāand indeed, weلَفِيlafī(are) surely inشَكّٖshakkindoubtمِّمَّاmimmāabout whatتَدۡعُونَنَآtadʿūnanāyou invite usإِلَيۡهِilayhito itمُرِيبٖmurībinsuspicious

alam yatikum naba-u alladhīna min qablikum qawmi nūḥin waʿādin wathamūda wa-alladhīna min baʿdihim lā yaʿlamuhum illā l-lahu jāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti faraddū aydiyahum fī afwāhihim waqālū innā kafarnā bimā ur'sil'tum bihi wa-innā lafī shakkin mimmā tadʿūnanā ilayhi murībin

Have you not ˹already˺ received the stories of those who were before you: the people of Noah, ’Âd, Thamûd, and those after them? Only Allah knows how many they were. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they put their hands over their mouths and said, “We totally reject what you have been sent with, and we are certainly in alarming doubt about what you are inviting us to.”

۞ قَالَتۡqālatSaidرُسُلُهُمۡrusuluhumtheir MessengersأَفِيafīCan (there) be aboutٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahشَكّٞshakkunany doubtفَاطِرِfāṭiri(the) Creatorٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwāti(of) the heavensوَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖwal-arḍiand the earthيَدۡعُوكُمۡyadʿūkumHe invites youلِيَغۡفِرَliyaghfiraso that He may forgiveلَكُمlakumfor youمِّنmin[of]ذُنُوبِكُمۡdhunūbikumyour sinsوَيُؤَخِّرَكُمۡwayu-akhirakumand give you respiteإِلَىٰٓilāforأَجَلٖajalina termمُّسَمّٗىۚmusammanappointedقَالُوٓاْqālūThey saidإِنۡinNotأَنتُمۡantumyouإِلَّاillā(are) butبَشَرٞbasharuna humanمِّثۡلُنَاmith'lunālike usتُرِيدُونَturīdūnayou wishأَنantoتَصُدُّونَاtaṣuddūnāhinder usعَمَّاʿammāfrom whatكَانَkānaused toيَعۡبُدُyaʿbuduworshipءَابَآؤُنَاābāunāour forefathersفَأۡتُونَاfatūnāSo bring usبِسُلۡطَٰنٖbisul'ṭāninan authorityمُّبِينٖmubīninclear

qālat rusuluhum afī l-lahi shakkun fāṭiri l-samāwāti wal-arḍi yadʿūkum liyaghfira lakum min dhunūbikum wayu-akhirakum ilā ajalin musamman qālū in antum illā basharun mith'lunā turīdūna an taṣuddūnā ʿammā kāna yaʿbudu ābāunā fatūnā bisul'ṭānin mubīnin

Their messengers asked ˹them˺, “Is there any doubt about Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth? He is inviting you in order to forgive your sins, and delay your end until your appointed term.” They argued, “You are no more than humans like us! You ˹only˺ wish to turn us away from what our forefathers worshipped. So bring us some compelling proof.”

قَالَتۡqālatSaidلَهُمۡlahumto themرُسُلُهُمۡrusuluhumtheir MessengersإِنinNotنَّحۡنُnaḥnuwe (are)إِلَّاillābutبَشَرٞbasharuna humanمِّثۡلُكُمۡmith'lukumlike youوَلَٰكِنَّwalākinnabutٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahيَمُنُّyamunnubestows His GraceعَلَىٰʿalāonمَنmanwhomيَشَآءُyashāuHe willsمِنۡminofعِبَادِهِۦۖʿibādihiHis slavesوَمَاwamāAnd notكَانَkānaisلَنَآlanāfor usأَنanthatنَّأۡتِيَكُمnatiyakumwe bring youبِسُلۡطَٰنٍbisul'ṭāninan authorityإِلَّاillāexceptبِإِذۡنِbi-idh'niby the permission of Allahٱللَّهِۚl-lahiby the permission of AllahوَعَلَىwaʿalāAnd uponٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahفَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِfalyatawakkaliso let put (their) trustٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَl-mu'minūnathe believers

qālat lahum rusuluhum in naḥnu illā basharun mith'lukum walākinna l-laha yamunnu ʿalā man yashāu min ʿibādihi wamā kāna lanā an natiyakum bisul'ṭānin illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūna

Their messengers said to them, “We are ˹indeed˺ only humans like you, but Allah favours whoever He chooses of His servants. It is not for us to bring you any proof without Allah’s permission. And in Allah let the believers put their trust.

وَمَاwamāAnd whatلَنَآlanā(is) for usأَلَّاallāthat notنَتَوَكَّلَnatawakkalawe put our trustعَلَىʿalāuponٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahوَقَدۡwaqadwhile certainlyهَدَىٰنَاhadānāHe has guided usسُبُلَنَاۚsubulanāto our waysوَلَنَصۡبِرَنَّwalanaṣbirannaAnd surely we will bear with patienceعَلَىٰʿalāonمَآmāwhatءَاذَيۡتُمُونَاۚādhaytumūnāharm you may cause usوَعَلَىwaʿalāAnd uponٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahفَلۡيَتَوَكَّلِfalyatawakkaliso let put (their) trustٱلۡمُتَوَكِّلُونَl-mutawakilūnathe ones who put (their) trust

wamā lanā allā natawakkala ʿalā l-lahi waqad hadānā subulanā walanaṣbiranna ʿalā mā ādhaytumūnā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mutawakilūna

Why should we not put our trust in Allah, when He has truly guided us to ˹the very best of˺ ways? Indeed, we will patiently endure whatever harm you may cause us. And in Allah let the faithful put their trust.”

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd saidٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelievedلِرُسُلِهِمۡlirusulihimto their Messengersلَنُخۡرِجَنَّكُمlanukh'rijannakumSurely we will drive you outمِّنۡminofأَرۡضِنَآarḍināour landأَوۡaworلَتَعُودُنَّlataʿūdunnasurely you should returnفِيfītoمِلَّتِنَاۖmillatināour religionفَأَوۡحَىٰٓfa-awḥāSo inspiredإِلَيۡهِمۡilayhimto themرَبُّهُمۡrabbuhumtheir Lordلَنُهۡلِكَنَّlanuh'likannaWe will surely destroyٱلظَّٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoers

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lirusulihim lanukh'rijannakum min arḍinā aw lataʿūdunna fī millatinā fa-awḥā ilayhim rabbuhum lanuh'likanna l-ẓālimīna

The disbelievers then threatened their messengers, “We will certainly expel you from our land, unless you return to our faith.” So their Lord revealed to them, “We will surely destroy the wrongdoers,

وَلَنُسۡكِنَنَّكُمُwalanus'kinannakumuAnd surely We will make you dwellٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍa(in) the landمِنۢminafter themبَعۡدِهِمۡۚbaʿdihimafter themذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatلِمَنۡliman(is) for whoeverخَافَkhāfafearsمَقَامِيmaqāmīstanding before Meوَخَافَwakhāfaand fearsوَعِيدِwaʿīdiMy Threat

walanus'kinannakumu l-arḍa min baʿdihim dhālika liman khāfa maqāmī wakhāfa waʿīdi

and make you reside in the land after them. This is for whoever is in awe of standing before Me and fears My warning.”

وَٱسۡتَفۡتَحُواْwa-is'taftaḥūAnd they sought victoryوَخَابَwakhābaand disappointedكُلُّkullueveryجَبَّارٍjabbārintyrantعَنِيدٖʿanīdinobstinate

wa-is'taftaḥū wakhāba kullu jabbārin ʿanīdin

And both sides called for judgment, so every stubborn tyrant was doomed.

مِّنminof himوَرَآئِهِۦwarāihiAheadجَهَنَّمُjahannamu(is) Hellوَيُسۡقَىٰwayus'qāand he will be made to drinkمِنminofمَّآءٖmāinwaterصَدِيدٖṣadīdinpurulent

min warāihi jahannamu wayus'qā min māin ṣadīdin

Awaiting them is Hell, and they will be left to drink oozing pus,

يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥyatajarraʿuhuHe will sip itوَلَاwalābut notيَكَادُyakāduhe will be nearيُسِيغُهُۥyusīghuhu(to) swallowing itوَيَأۡتِيهِwayatīhiAnd will come to himٱلۡمَوۡتُl-mawtuthe deathمِنminfromكُلِّkullieveryمَكَانٖmakāninsideوَمَاwamābut notهُوَhuwaheبِمَيِّتٖۖbimayyitinwill dieوَمِنwaminAnd ahead of himوَرَآئِهِۦwarāihiAnd ahead of himعَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishmentغَلِيظٞghalīẓunharsh

yatajarraʿuhu walā yakādu yusīghuhu wayatīhi l-mawtu min kulli makānin wamā huwa bimayyitin wamin warāihi ʿadhābun ghalīẓun

which they will sip with difficulty, and can hardly swallow. Death will overwhelm them from every side, yet they will not ˹be able to˺ die. Awaiting them still is harsher torment.

مَّثَلُmathalu(The) exampleٱلَّذِينَalladhīna(of) those whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelieveبِرَبِّهِمۡۖbirabbihimin their Lordأَعۡمَٰلُهُمۡaʿmāluhumtheir deedsكَرَمَادٍkaramādin(are) like ashesٱشۡتَدَّتۡish'taddatblows furiouslyبِهِbihion itٱلرِّيحُl-rīḥuthe windفِيfīinيَوۡمٍyawmina dayعَاصِفٖۖʿāṣifinstormyلَّاlāNoيَقۡدِرُونَyaqdirūnacontrol (they have)مِمَّاmimmāof whatكَسَبُواْkasabūthey have earnedعَلَىٰʿalāonشَيۡءٖۚshayinanythingذَٰلِكَdhālikaThatهُوَhuwa[it]ٱلضَّلَٰلُl-ḍalālu(is) the strayingٱلۡبَعِيدُl-baʿīdufar

mathalu alladhīna kafarū birabbihim aʿmāluhum karamādin ish'taddat bihi l-rīḥu fī yawmin ʿāṣifin lā yaqdirūna mimmā kasabū ʿalā shayin dhālika huwa l-ḍalālu l-baʿīdu

The parable of the deeds of those who disbelieve in their Lord is that of ashes fiercely blown away by wind on a stormy day. They will gain nothing from what they have earned. That is ˹truly˺ the farthest one can stray.

أَلَمۡalamDo notتَرَtarayou seeأَنَّannathatٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahخَلَقَkhalaqacreatedٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِl-samāwātithe heavensوَٱلۡأَرۡضَwal-arḍaand the earthبِٱلۡحَقِّۚbil-ḥaqiin truthإِنinIfيَشَأۡyashaHe willsيُذۡهِبۡكُمۡyudh'hib'kumHe can remove youوَيَأۡتِwayatiand bringبِخَلۡقٖbikhalqina creationجَدِيدٖjadīdinnew

alam tara anna l-laha khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi in yasha yudh'hib'kum wayati bikhalqin jadīdin

Have you not seen that Allah created the heavens and the earth for a reason? If He wills, He can eliminate you and produce a new creation.

وَمَاwamāAnd notذَٰلِكَdhālika(is) thatعَلَىʿalāonٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahبِعَزِيزٖbiʿazīzingreat

wamā dhālika ʿalā l-lahi biʿazīzin

And that is not difficult for Allah ˹at all˺.

وَبَرَزُواْwabarazūAnd they will come forthلِلَّهِlillahibefore Allahجَمِيعٗاjamīʿanall togetherفَقَالَfaqālathen will sayٱلضُّعَفَٰٓؤُاْl-ḍuʿafāuthe weakلِلَّذِينَlilladhīnato those whoٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوٓاْis'takbarūwere arrogantإِنَّاinnāIndeed weكُنَّاkunnāwe wereلَكُمۡlakumyourتَبَعٗاtabaʿanfollowersفَهَلۡfahalso canأَنتُمantumyou (be)مُّغۡنُونَmugh'nūnathe one who availsعَنَّاʿannāusمِنۡminfromعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishmentٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) AllahمِنminanythingشَيۡءٖۚshayinanythingقَالُواْqālūThey will sayلَوۡlawIfهَدَىٰنَاhadānāAllah had guided usٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah had guided usلَهَدَيۡنَٰكُمۡۖlahadaynākumsurely we would have guided youسَوَآءٌsawāon(It is) sameعَلَيۡنَآʿalaynāfor usأَجَزِعۡنَآajaziʿ'nāwhether we show intoleranceأَمۡamorصَبَرۡنَاṣabarnāwe are patientمَاmānotلَنَاlanā(is) for usمِنminanyمَّحِيصٖmaḥīṣinplace of escape

wabarazū lillahi jamīʿan faqāla l-ḍuʿafāu lilladhīna is'takbarū innā kunnā lakum tabaʿan fahal antum mugh'nūna ʿannā min ʿadhābi l-lahi min shayin qālū law hadānā l-lahu lahadaynākum sawāon ʿalaynā ajaziʿ'nā am ṣabarnā mā lanā min maḥīṣin

They will all appear before Allah, and the lowly ˹followers˺ will appeal to the arrogant ˹leaders˺, “We were your ˹dedicated˺ followers, so will you ˹then˺ protect us from Allah’s torment in any way?” They will reply, “Had Allah guided us, we would have guided you. ˹Now˺ it is all the same for us whether we suffer patiently or impatiently, there is no escape for us.”

وَقَالَwaqālaAnd will sayٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُl-shayṭānuthe Shaitaanلَمَّاlammāwhenقُضِيَquḍiyahas been decidedٱلۡأَمۡرُl-amruthe matterإِنَّinnaIndeedٱللَّهَl-lahaAllahوَعَدَكُمۡwaʿadakumpromised youوَعۡدَwaʿdaa promiseٱلۡحَقِّl-ḥaqi(of) truthوَوَعَدتُّكُمۡwawaʿadttukumAnd I promised youفَأَخۡلَفۡتُكُمۡۖfa-akhlaftukumbut I betrayed youوَمَاwamāBut notكَانَkānaI hadلِيَliyaI hadعَلَيۡكُمʿalaykumover youمِّنminanyسُلۡطَٰنٍsul'ṭāninauthorityإِلَّآillāexceptأَنanthatدَعَوۡتُكُمۡdaʿawtukumI invited youفَٱسۡتَجَبۡتُمۡfa-is'tajabtumand you respondedلِيۖlīto meفَلَاfalāSo (do) notتَلُومُونِيtalūmūnīblame meوَلُومُوٓاْwalūmūbut blameأَنفُسَكُمۖanfusakumyourselvesمَّآmāNotأَنَا۠anā(can) Iبِمُصۡرِخِكُمۡbimuṣ'rikhikum(be) your helperوَمَآwamāand notأَنتُمantumyou (can)بِمُصۡرِخِيَّbimuṣ'rikhiyya(be) my helperإِنِّيinnīIndeed, Iكَفَرۡتُkafartudenyبِمَآbimā[of what]أَشۡرَكۡتُمُونِashraktumūniyour association of me (with Allah)مِنminbeforeقَبۡلُۗqablubeforeإِنَّinnaIndeedٱلظَّٰلِمِينَl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoersلَهُمۡlahumfor themعَذَابٌʿadhābun(is) a punishmentأَلِيمٞalīmunpainful

waqāla l-shayṭānu lammā quḍiya l-amru inna l-laha waʿadakum waʿda l-ḥaqi wawaʿadttukum fa-akhlaftukum wamā kāna liya ʿalaykum min sul'ṭānin illā an daʿawtukum fa-is'tajabtum lī falā talūmūnī walūmū anfusakum mā anā bimuṣ'rikhikum wamā antum bimuṣ'rikhiyya innī kafartu bimā ashraktumūni min qablu inna l-ẓālimīna lahum ʿadhābun alīmun

And Satan will say ˹to his followers˺ after the judgment has been passed, “Indeed, Allah has made you a true promise. I too made you a promise, but I failed you. I did not have any authority over you. I only called you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot save you, nor can you save me. Indeed, I denounce your previous association of me with Allah ˹in loyalty˺. Surely the wrongdoers will suffer a painful punishment.”

وَأُدۡخِلَwa-ud'khilaAnd will be admittedٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelievedوَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand didٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deedsجَنَّٰتٖjannātin(to) Gardensتَجۡرِيtajrīflowsمِنminfromتَحۡتِهَاtaḥtihāunderneath itٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُl-anhāruthe riversخَٰلِدِينَkhālidīna(will) abide foreverفِيهَاfīhāin itبِإِذۡنِbi-idh'niby the permissionرَبِّهِمۡۖrabbihim(of) their Lordتَحِيَّتُهُمۡtaḥiyyatuhumtheir greetingsفِيهَاfīhāthereinسَلَٰمٌsalāmun(will be) peace

wa-ud'khila alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā bi-idh'ni rabbihim taḥiyyatuhum fīhā salāmun

Those who believe and do good will be admitted into Gardens, under which rivers flow—to stay there forever by the Will of their Lord—where they will be greeted with “Peace!”

أَلَمۡalamDo notتَرَtarayou seeكَيۡفَkayfahowضَرَبَḍarabaAllah sets forthٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah sets forthمَثَلٗاmathalanthe exampleكَلِمَةٗkalimatana wordطَيِّبَةٗṭayyibatangoodكَشَجَرَةٖkashajaratin(is) like a treeطَيِّبَةٍṭayyibatingoodأَصۡلُهَاaṣluhāits rootثَابِتٞthābitun(is) firmوَفَرۡعُهَاwafarʿuhāand its branchesفِيfī(are) inٱلسَّمَآءِl-samāithe sky

alam tara kayfa ḍaraba l-lahu mathalan kalimatan ṭayyibatan kashajaratin ṭayyibatin aṣluhā thābitun wafarʿuhā fī l-samāi

Do you not see how Allah compares a good word to a good tree? Its root is firm and its branches reach the sky,

تُؤۡتِيٓtu'tīGivingأُكُلَهَاukulahāits fruitكُلَّkullaallحِينِۭḥīnintimeبِإِذۡنِbi-idh'niby the permissionرَبِّهَاۗrabbihāof its LordوَيَضۡرِبُwayaḍribuAnd Allah sets forthٱللَّهُl-lahuAnd Allah sets forthٱلۡأَمۡثَالَl-amthālathe examplesلِلنَّاسِlilnnāsifor mankindلَعَلَّهُمۡlaʿallahumso that they mayيَتَذَكَّرُونَyatadhakkarūnaremember

tu'tī ukulahā kulla ḥīnin bi-idh'ni rabbihā wayaḍribu l-lahu l-amthāla lilnnāsi laʿallahum yatadhakkarūna

˹always˺ yielding its fruit in every season by the Will of its Lord. This is how Allah sets forth parables for the people, so perhaps they will be mindful.

وَمَثَلُwamathaluAnd (the) exampleكَلِمَةٍkalimatin(of) a wordخَبِيثَةٖkhabīthatinevilكَشَجَرَةٍkashajaratin(is) like a treeخَبِيثَةٍkhabīthatinevilٱجۡتُثَّتۡuj'tuthatuprootedمِنminfromفَوۡقِfawqithe surfaceٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍi(of) the earthمَاmānotلَهَاlahāfor itمِنmin(is) anyقَرَارٖqarārinstability

wamathalu kalimatin khabīthatin kashajaratin khabīthatin uj'tuthat min fawqi l-arḍi mā lahā min qarārin

And the parable of an evil word is that of an evil tree, uprooted from the earth, having no stability.

يُثَبِّتُyuthabbituAllah keeps firmٱللَّهُl-lahuAllah keeps firmٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveبِٱلۡقَوۡلِbil-qawliwith the firm wordٱلثَّابِتِl-thābitiwith the firm wordفِيfīinٱلۡحَيَوٰةِl-ḥayatithe lifeٱلدُّنۡيَاl-dun'yā(of) the worldوَفِيwafīand inٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۖl-ākhiratithe HereafterوَيُضِلُّwayuḍilluAnd Allah lets go astrayٱللَّهُl-lahuAnd Allah lets go astrayٱلظَّٰلِمِينَۚl-ẓālimīnathe wrongdoersوَيَفۡعَلُwayafʿaluAnd Allah doesٱللَّهُl-lahuAnd Allah doesمَاmāwhatيَشَآءُyashāuHe wills

yuthabbitu l-lahu alladhīna āmanū bil-qawli l-thābiti fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wafī l-ākhirati wayuḍillu l-lahu l-ẓālimīna wayafʿalu l-lahu mā yashāu

Allah makes the believers steadfast with the firm Word ˹of faith˺ in this worldly life and the Hereafter. And Allah leaves the wrongdoers to stray. For Allah does what He wills.

۞ أَلَمۡalamHave notتَرَtarayou seenإِلَىilā[to]ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoبَدَّلُواْbaddalū(have) changedنِعۡمَتَniʿ'mata(the) Favorٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahكُفۡرٗاkuf'ran(for) disbeliefوَأَحَلُّواْwa-aḥallūand they ledقَوۡمَهُمۡqawmahumtheir peopleدَارَdāra(to the) houseٱلۡبَوَارِl-bawāri(of) destruction

alam tara ilā alladhīna baddalū niʿ'mata l-lahi kuf'ran wa-aḥallū qawmahum dāra l-bawāri

Have you not seen those ˹disbelievers˺ who meet Allah’s favours with ingratitude and lead their own people to their doom?

جَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellيَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖyaṣlawnahā(in) it they will burnوَبِئۡسَwabi'saand a wretchedٱلۡقَرَارُl-qarāruplace to settle

jahannama yaṣlawnahā wabi'sa l-qarāru

In Hell they will burn. What an evil place for settlement.

وَجَعَلُواْwajaʿalūAnd they set upلِلَّهِlillahito Allahأَندَادٗاandādanequalsلِّيُضِلُّواْliyuḍillūso that they misleadعَنʿanfromسَبِيلِهِۦۗsabīlihiHis PathقُلۡqulSayتَمَتَّعُواْtamattaʿūEnjoyفَإِنَّfa-innabut indeedمَصِيرَكُمۡmaṣīrakumyour destinationإِلَىilā(is) toٱلنَّارِl-nārithe Fire

wajaʿalū lillahi andādan liyuḍillū ʿan sabīlihi qul tamattaʿū fa-inna maṣīrakum ilā l-nāri

They set up equals to Allah to mislead ˹others˺ from His Way. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Enjoy yourselves! Surely your destination is the Fire.”
