Al-Inshiqaq

إِذَاidhāWhenٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyٱنشَقَّتۡinshaqqatis split asunder

idhā l-samāu inshaqqat

When the sky bursts open,

وَأَذِنَتۡwa-adhinatAnd has listenedلِرَبِّهَاlirabbihāto its Lordوَحُقَّتۡwaḥuqqatand was obligated

wa-adhinat lirabbihā waḥuqqat

obeying its Lord as it must,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡأَرۡضُl-arḍuthe earthمُدَّتۡmuddatis spread

wa-idhā l-arḍu muddat

and when the earth is flattened out,

وَأَلۡقَتۡwa-alqatAnd has cast outمَاmāwhatفِيهَاfīhā(is) in itوَتَخَلَّتۡwatakhallatand becomes empty

wa-alqat mā fīhā watakhallat

and ejects ˹all˺ its contents and becomes empty,

وَأَذِنَتۡwa-adhinatAnd has listenedلِرَبِّهَاlirabbihāto its Lordوَحُقَّتۡwaḥuqqatand was obligated

wa-adhinat lirabbihā waḥuqqat

obeying its Lord as it must, ˹surely you will all be judged˺.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَاyāayyuhāOٱلۡإِنسَٰنُl-insānumankindإِنَّكَinnakaIndeed, youكَادِحٌkādiḥun(are) laboringإِلَىٰilātoرَبِّكَrabbikayour Lordكَدۡحٗاkadḥan(with) exertionفَمُلَٰقِيهِfamulāqīhiand you (will) meet Him

yāayyuhā l-insānu innaka kādiḥun ilā rabbika kadḥan famulāqīhi

O humanity! Indeed, you are labouring restlessly towards your Lord, and will ˹eventually˺ meet the consequences.

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as forمَنۡman(him) whoأُوتِيَūtiyais givenكِتَٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordبِيَمِينِهِۦbiyamīnihiin his right (hand)

fa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu biyamīnihi

As for those who are given their record in their right hand,

فَسَوۡفَfasawfaThen soonيُحَاسَبُyuḥāsabuhis account will be takenحِسَابٗاḥisābanan accountيَسِيرٗاyasīraneasy

fasawfa yuḥāsabu ḥisāban yasīran

they will have an easy reckoning,

وَيَنقَلِبُwayanqalibuAnd he will returnإِلَىٰٓilātoأَهۡلِهِۦahlihihis peopleمَسۡرُورٗاmasrūranhappily

wayanqalibu ilā ahlihi masrūran

and will return to their people joyfully.

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنۡman(him) whoأُوتِيَūtiyais givenكِتَٰبَهُۥkitābahuhis recordوَرَآءَwarāabehindظَهۡرِهِۦẓahrihihis back

wa-ammā man ūtiya kitābahu warāa ẓahrihi

And as for those who are given their record ˹in their left hand˺ from behind their backs,

فَسَوۡفَfasawfaThen soonيَدۡعُواْyadʿūhe will callثُبُورٗاthubūran(for) destruction

fasawfa yadʿū thubūran

they will cry for ˹instant˺ destruction,

وَيَصۡلَىٰwayaṣlāAnd he will burnسَعِيرًاsaʿīran(in) a Blaze

wayaṣlā saʿīran

and will burn in the blazing Fire.

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heكَانَkānahad beenفِيٓfīamongأَهۡلِهِۦahlihihis peopleمَسۡرُورًاmasrūranhappy

innahu kāna fī ahlihi masrūran

For they used to be prideful among their people,

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, heظَنَّẓanna(had) thoughtأَنanthatلَّنlanneverيَحُورَyaḥūrahe would return

innahu ẓanna an lan yaḥūra

thinking they would never return ˹to Allah˺.

بَلَىٰٓۚbalāYesإِنَّinnaIndeedرَبَّهُۥrabbahuhis Lordكَانَkānawasبِهِۦbihiof himبَصِيرٗاbaṣīranAll-Seer

balā inna rabbahu kāna bihi baṣīran

Yes ˹they would˺! Surely their Lord has always been All-Seeing of them.

فَلَآfalāBut nayأُقۡسِمُuq'simuI swearبِٱلشَّفَقِbil-shafaqiby the twilight glow

falā uq'simu bil-shafaqi

So, I do swear by the twilight!

وَٱلَّيۡلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightوَمَاwamāand whatوَسَقَwasaqait envelops

wa-al-layli wamā wasaqa

And by the night and whatever it envelops!

وَٱلۡقَمَرِwal-qamariAnd the moonإِذَاidhāwhenٱتَّسَقَittasaqait becomes full

wal-qamari idhā ittasaqa

And by the moon when it waxes full!

لَتَرۡكَبُنَّlatarkabunnaYou will surely embarkطَبَقًاṭabaqan(to) stageعَنʿanfromطَبَقٖṭabaqinstage

latarkabunna ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaqin

You will certainly pass from one state to another.

فَمَاfamāSo whatلَهُمۡlahum(is) for themلَاlānotيُؤۡمِنُونَyu'minūnathey believe

famā lahum lā yu'minūna

So what is the matter with them that they do not believe,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenقُرِئَquri-ais recitedعَلَيۡهِمُʿalayhimuto themٱلۡقُرۡءَانُl-qur'ānuthe Quranلَاlānotيَسۡجُدُونَۤ ۩yasjudūnathey prostrate

wa-idhā quri-a ʿalayhimu l-qur'ānu lā yasjudūna

and when the Quran is recited to them, they do not bow down ˹in submission˺?

بَلِbaliNayٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoكَفَرُواْkafarūdisbelievedيُكَذِّبُونَyukadhibūnadeny

bali alladhīna kafarū yukadhibūna

In fact, the disbelievers persist in denial.

وَٱللَّهُwal-lahuAnd Allahأَعۡلَمُaʿlamu(is) most knowingبِمَاbimāof whatيُوعُونَyūʿūnathey keep within themselves

wal-lahu aʿlamu bimā yūʿūna

But Allah knows best whatever they hide.

فَبَشِّرۡهُمfabashir'humso give them tidingsبِعَذَابٍbiʿadhābinof a punishmentأَلِيمٍalīminpainful

fabashir'hum biʿadhābin alīmin

So give them good news of a painful punishment.

إِلَّاillāExceptٱلَّذِينَalladhīnathose whoءَامَنُواْāmanūbelieveوَعَمِلُواْwaʿamilūand doٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِl-ṣāliḥātirighteous deedsلَهُمۡlahumFor themأَجۡرٌajrun(is) a rewardغَيۡرُghayruneverمَمۡنُونِۭmamnūninending

illā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lahum ajrun ghayru mamnūnin

But those who believe and do good will have a never-ending reward.
