سُبۡحَٰنَ sub'ḥāna Exalted ٱلَّذِيٓ alladhī (is) the One Who أَسۡرَىٰ asrā took بِعَبۡدِهِۦ biʿabdihi His servant لَيۡلٗا laylan (by) night مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ l-masjidi Al-Masjid Al-Haraam ٱلۡحَرَامِ l-ḥarāmi Al-Masjid Al-Haraam إِلَى ilā to ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ l-masjidi Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa ٱلۡأَقۡصَا l-aqṣā Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa ٱلَّذِي alladhī which بَٰرَكۡنَا bāraknā We blessed حَوۡلَهُۥ ḥawlahu its surroundings لِنُرِيَهُۥ linuriyahu that We may show him مِنۡ min of ءَايَٰتِنَآۚ āyātinā Our Signs إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed He هُوَ huwa He ٱلسَّمِيعُ l-samīʿu (is) the All-Hearer ٱلۡبَصِيرُ l-baṣīru the All-Seer
sub'ḥāna alladhī asrā biʿabdihi laylan mina l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi ilā l-masjidi l-aqṣā alladhī bāraknā ḥawlahu linuriyahu min āyātinā innahu huwa l-samīʿu l-baṣīru
Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muḥammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
وَءَاتَيۡنَا waātaynā And We gave مُوسَى mūsā Musa ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ l-kitāba the Book وَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ wajaʿalnāhu and made it هُدٗى hudan a guidance لِّبَنِيٓ libanī for the Children إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (of) Israel أَلَّا allā That not تَتَّخِذُواْ tattakhidhū you take مِن min other than Me دُونِي dūnī other than Me وَكِيلٗا wakīlan (as) a Disposer of affairs
waātaynā mūsā l-kitāba wajaʿalnāhu hudan libanī is'rāīla allā tattakhidhū min dūnī wakīlan
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guide for the Children of Israel, ˹stating:˺ “Do not take besides Me any other Trustee of Affairs,
ذُرِّيَّةَ dhurriyyata Offsprings مَنۡ man (of one) who حَمَلۡنَا ḥamalnā We carried مَعَ maʿa with نُوحٍۚ nūḥin Nuh إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, he كَانَ kāna was عَبۡدٗا ʿabdan a servant شَكُورٗا shakūran grateful
dhurriyyata man ḥamalnā maʿa nūḥin innahu kāna ʿabdan shakūran
˹O˺ descendants of those We carried with Noah ˹in the Ark˺! He was indeed a grateful servant.”
وَقَضَيۡنَآ waqaḍaynā And We decreed إِلَىٰ ilā for بَنِيٓ banī (the) Children إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ is'rāīla (of) Israel فِي fī in ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ l-kitābi the Book لَتُفۡسِدُنَّ latuf'sidunna Surely you will cause corruption فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth مَرَّتَيۡنِ marratayni twice وَلَتَعۡلُنَّ walataʿlunna and surely you will reach عُلُوّٗا ʿuluwwan haughtiness كَبِيرٗا kabīran great
waqaḍaynā ilā banī is'rāīla fī l-kitābi latuf'sidunna fī l-arḍi marratayni walataʿlunna ʿuluwwan kabīran
And We warned the Children of Israel in the Scripture, “You will certainly cause corruption in the land twice, and you will become extremely arrogant.
فَإِذَا fa-idhā So when جَآءَ jāa came وَعۡدُ waʿdu (the) promise أُولَىٰهُمَا ūlāhumā (for) the first of the two بَعَثۡنَا baʿathnā We raised عَلَيۡكُمۡ ʿalaykum against you عِبَادٗا ʿibādan servants لَّنَآ lanā of Ours أُوْلِي ulī those of great military might بَأۡسٖ basin those of great military might شَدِيدٖ shadīdin those of great military might فَجَاسُواْ fajāsū and they entered خِلَٰلَ khilāla the inner most part ٱلدِّيَارِۚ l-diyāri (of) the homes وَكَانَ wakāna and (it) was وَعۡدٗا waʿdan a promise مَّفۡعُولٗا mafʿūlan fulfilled
fa-idhā jāa waʿdu ūlāhumā baʿathnā ʿalaykum ʿibādan lanā ulī basin shadīdin fajāsū khilāla l-diyāri wakāna waʿdan mafʿūlan
When the first of the two warnings would come to pass, We would send against you some of Our servants of great might, who would ravage your homes. This would be a warning fulfilled.
ثُمَّ thumma Then رَدَدۡنَا radadnā We gave back لَكُمُ lakumu to you ٱلۡكَرَّةَ l-karata the return victory عَلَيۡهِمۡ ʿalayhim over them وَأَمۡدَدۡنَٰكُم wa-amdadnākum And We reinforced you بِأَمۡوَٰلٖ bi-amwālin with the wealth وَبَنِينَ wabanīna and sons وَجَعَلۡنَٰكُمۡ wajaʿalnākum and made you أَكۡثَرَ akthara more نَفِيرًا nafīran numerous
thumma radadnā lakumu l-karata ʿalayhim wa-amdadnākum bi-amwālin wabanīna wajaʿalnākum akthara nafīran
Then ˹after your repentance˺ We would give you the upper hand over them and aid you with wealth and offspring, causing you to outnumber them.
إِنۡ in If أَحۡسَنتُمۡ aḥsantum you do good أَحۡسَنتُمۡ aḥsantum you do good لِأَنفُسِكُمۡۖ li-anfusikum for yourselves وَإِنۡ wa-in and if أَسَأۡتُمۡ asatum you do evil فَلَهَاۚ falahā then it is for it فَإِذَا fa-idhā So when جَآءَ jāa came وَعۡدُ waʿdu promise ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ l-ākhirati the last لِيَسُـُٔواْ liyasūū to sadden وُجُوهَكُمۡ wujūhakum your faces وَلِيَدۡخُلُواْ waliyadkhulū and to enter ٱلۡمَسۡجِدَ l-masjida the Masjid كَمَا kamā just as دَخَلُوهُ dakhalūhu they (had) entered it أَوَّلَ awwala first مَرَّةٖ marratin time وَلِيُتَبِّرُواْ waliyutabbirū and to destroy مَا mā what عَلَوۡاْ ʿalaw they had conquered تَتۡبِيرًا tatbīran (with) destruction
in aḥsantum aḥsantum li-anfusikum wa-in asatum falahā fa-idhā jāa waʿdu l-ākhirati liyasūū wujūhakum waliyadkhulū l-masjida kamā dakhalūhu awwala marratin waliyutabbirū mā ʿalaw tatbīran
If you act rightly, it is for your own good, but if you do wrong, it is to your own loss. “And when the second warning would come to pass, your enemies would ˹be left to˺ totally disgrace you and enter that place of worship as they entered it the first time, and utterly destroy whatever would fall into their hands.
عَسَىٰ ʿasā (It) may be رَبُّكُمۡ rabbukum that your Lord أَن an that your Lord يَرۡحَمَكُمۡۚ yarḥamakum (may) have mercy upon you وَإِنۡ wa-in But if عُدتُّمۡ ʿudttum you return عُدۡنَاۚ ʿud'nā We will return وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā And We have made جَهَنَّمَ jahannama Hell لِلۡكَٰفِرِينَ lil'kāfirīna for the disbelievers حَصِيرًا ḥaṣīran a prison-bed
ʿasā rabbukum an yarḥamakum wa-in ʿudttum ʿud'nā wajaʿalnā jahannama lil'kāfirīna ḥaṣīran
Perhaps your Lord will have mercy on you ˹if you repent˺, but if you return ˹to sin˺, We will return ˹to punishment˺. And We have made Hell a ˹permanent˺ confinement for the disbelievers.”
إِنَّ inna Indeed هَٰذَا hādhā this ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ l-qur'āna the Quran يَهۡدِي yahdī guides لِلَّتِي lillatī to that هِيَ hiya which أَقۡوَمُ aqwamu (is) most straight وَيُبَشِّرُ wayubashiru and gives glad tidings ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ l-mu'minīna to the believers ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who يَعۡمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna do ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ l-ṣāliḥāti the righteous deeds أَنَّ anna that لَهُمۡ lahum for them أَجۡرٗا ajran (is) a reward كَبِيرٗا kabīran great
inna hādhā l-qur'āna yahdī lillatī hiya aqwamu wayubashiru l-mu'minīna alladhīna yaʿmalūna l-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran kabīran
Surely this Quran guides to what is most upright, and gives good news to the believers—who do good—that they will have a mighty reward.
وَأَنَّ wa-anna And that ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna those who لَا lā (do) not يُؤۡمِنُونَ yu'minūna believe بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ bil-ākhirati in the Hereafter أَعۡتَدۡنَا aʿtadnā We have prepared لَهُمۡ lahum for them عَذَابًا ʿadhāban a punishment أَلِيمٗا alīman painful
wa-anna alladhīna lā yu'minūna bil-ākhirati aʿtadnā lahum ʿadhāban alīman
And ˹it warns˺ those who do not believe in the Hereafter ˹that˺ We have prepared for them a painful punishment.
وَيَدۡعُ wayadʿu And prays ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ l-insānu the man بِٱلشَّرِّ bil-shari for evil دُعَآءَهُۥ duʿāahu (as) he prays بِٱلۡخَيۡرِۖ bil-khayri for the good وَكَانَ wakāna And is ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ l-insānu the man عَجُولٗا ʿajūlan ever hasty
wayadʿu l-insānu bil-shari duʿāahu bil-khayri wakāna l-insānu ʿajūlan
And humans ˹swiftly˺ pray for evil as they pray for good. For humankind is ever hasty.
وَجَعَلۡنَا wajaʿalnā And We have made ٱلَّيۡلَ al-layla the night وَٱلنَّهَارَ wal-nahāra and the day ءَايَتَيۡنِۖ āyatayni (as) two signs فَمَحَوۡنَآ famaḥawnā Then We erased ءَايَةَ āyata (the) sign ٱلَّيۡلِ al-layli (of) the night وَجَعَلۡنَآ wajaʿalnā and We made ءَايَةَ āyata (the) sign ٱلنَّهَارِ l-nahāri (of) the day مُبۡصِرَةٗ mub'ṣiratan visible لِّتَبۡتَغُواْ litabtaghū that you may seek فَضۡلٗا faḍlan bounty مِّن min from رَّبِّكُمۡ rabbikum your Lord وَلِتَعۡلَمُواْ walitaʿlamū and that you may know عَدَدَ ʿadada (the) number ٱلسِّنِينَ l-sinīna (of) the years وَٱلۡحِسَابَۚ wal-ḥisāba and the account وَكُلَّ wakulla And every شَيۡءٖ shayin thing فَصَّلۡنَٰهُ faṣṣalnāhu We have explained it تَفۡصِيلٗا tafṣīlan (in) detail
wajaʿalnā al-layla wal-nahāra āyatayni famaḥawnā āyata al-layli wajaʿalnā āyata l-nahāri mub'ṣiratan litabtaghū faḍlan min rabbikum walitaʿlamū ʿadada l-sinīna wal-ḥisāba wakulla shayin faṣṣalnāhu tafṣīlan
We made the day and night as two signs. So We made the sign of the night devoid of light, and We made the sign of the day ˹perfectly˺ bright, so that you may seek the bounty of your Lord and know the number of years and calculation ˹of time˺. And We have explained everything in detail.
وَكُلَّ wakulla And (for) every إِنسَٰنٍ insānin man أَلۡزَمۡنَٰهُ alzamnāhu We have fastened to him طَٰٓئِرَهُۥ ṭāirahu his fate فِي fī in عُنُقِهِۦۖ ʿunuqihi his neck وَنُخۡرِجُ wanukh'riju and We will bring forth لَهُۥ lahu for him يَوۡمَ yawma (on the) Day ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ l-qiyāmati (of) the Resurrection كِتَٰبٗا kitāban a record يَلۡقَىٰهُ yalqāhu which he will find مَنشُورًا manshūran wide open
wakulla insānin alzamnāhu ṭāirahu fī ʿunuqihi wanukh'riju lahu yawma l-qiyāmati kitāban yalqāhu manshūran
We have bound every human’s destiny to their neck. And on the Day of Judgment We will bring forth to each ˹person˺ a record which they will find laid open.
ٱقۡرَأۡ iq'ra Read كِتَٰبَكَ kitābaka your record كَفَىٰ kafā Sufficient بِنَفۡسِكَ binafsika (is) yourself ٱلۡيَوۡمَ l-yawma today عَلَيۡكَ ʿalayka against you حَسِيبٗا ḥasīban (as) accountant
iq'ra kitābaka kafā binafsika l-yawma ʿalayka ḥasīban
˹And it will be said,˺ “Read your record. You ˹alone˺ are sufficient this Day to take account of yourself.”
مَّنِ mani Whoever ٱهۡتَدَىٰ ih'tadā (is) guided فَإِنَّمَا fa-innamā then only يَهۡتَدِي yahtadī he is guided لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ linafsihi for his soul وَمَن waman And whoever ضَلَّ ḍalla goes astray فَإِنَّمَا fa-innamā then only يَضِلُّ yaḍillu he goes astray عَلَيۡهَاۚ ʿalayhā against it وَلَا walā And not تَزِرُ taziru will bear وَازِرَةٞ wāziratun a bearer of burden وِزۡرَ wiz'ra burden أُخۡرَىٰۗ ukh'rā (of) another وَمَا wamā And not كُنَّا kunnā We مُعَذِّبِينَ muʿadhibīna are to punish حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until نَبۡعَثَ nabʿatha We have sent رَسُولٗا rasūlan a Messenger
mani ih'tadā fa-innamā yahtadī linafsihi waman ḍalla fa-innamā yaḍillu ʿalayhā walā taziru wāziratun wiz'ra ukh'rā wamā kunnā muʿadhibīna ḥattā nabʿatha rasūlan
Whoever chooses to be guided, it is only for their own good. And whoever chooses to stray, it is only to their own loss. No soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another. And We would never punish ˹a people˺ until We have sent a messenger ˹to warn them˺.
وَإِذَآ wa-idhā And when أَرَدۡنَآ aradnā We intend أَن an that نُّهۡلِكَ nuh'lika We destroy قَرۡيَةً qaryatan a town أَمَرۡنَا amarnā We order مُتۡرَفِيهَا mut'rafīhā its wealthy people فَفَسَقُواْ fafasaqū but they defiantly disobey فِيهَا fīhā therein فَحَقَّ faḥaqqa so (is) proved true عَلَيۡهَا ʿalayhā against it ٱلۡقَوۡلُ l-qawlu the word فَدَمَّرۡنَٰهَا fadammarnāhā and We destroy it تَدۡمِيرٗا tadmīran (with) destruction
wa-idhā aradnā an nuh'lika qaryatan amarnā mut'rafīhā fafasaqū fīhā faḥaqqa ʿalayhā l-qawlu fadammarnāhā tadmīran
Whenever We intend to destroy a society, We command its elite ˹to obey Allah˺ but they act rebelliously in it. So the decree ˹of punishment˺ is justified, and We destroy it utterly.
وَكَمۡ wakam And how many أَهۡلَكۡنَا ahlaknā We destroyed مِنَ mina from ٱلۡقُرُونِ l-qurūni the generations مِنۢ min after بَعۡدِ baʿdi after نُوحٖۗ nūḥin Nuh وَكَفَىٰ wakafā And sufficient بِرَبِّكَ birabbika (is) your Lord بِذُنُوبِ bidhunūbi concerning the sins عِبَادِهِۦ ʿibādihi (of) His servants خَبِيرَۢا khabīran All-Aware بَصِيرٗا baṣīran All-Seer
wakam ahlaknā mina l-qurūni min baʿdi nūḥin wakafā birabbika bidhunūbi ʿibādihi khabīran baṣīran
˹Imagine˺ how many peoples We have destroyed after Noah! And sufficient is your Lord as All-Aware and All-Seeing of the sins of His servants.
مَّن man Whoever كَانَ kāna should يُرِيدُ yurīdu desire ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ l-ʿājilata the immediate عَجَّلۡنَا ʿajjalnā We hasten لَهُۥ lahu for him فِيهَا fīhā in it مَا mā what نَشَآءُ nashāu We will لِمَن liman to whom نُّرِيدُ nurīdu We intend ثُمَّ thumma Then جَعَلۡنَا jaʿalnā We have made لَهُۥ lahu for him جَهَنَّمَ jahannama Hell يَصۡلَىٰهَا yaṣlāhā he will burn مَذۡمُومٗا madhmūman disgraced مَّدۡحُورٗا madḥūran rejected
man kāna yurīdu l-ʿājilata ʿajjalnā lahu fīhā mā nashāu liman nurīdu thumma jaʿalnā lahu jahannama yaṣlāhā madhmūman madḥūran
Whoever desires this fleeting world ˹alone˺, We hasten in it whatever We please to whoever We will; then We destine them for Hell, where they will burn, condemned and rejected.
وَمَنۡ waman And whoever أَرَادَ arāda desires ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ l-ākhirata the Hereafter وَسَعَىٰ wasaʿā and exerts لَهَا lahā for it سَعۡيَهَا saʿyahā the effort وَهُوَ wahuwa while he مُؤۡمِنٞ mu'minun (is) a believer فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those كَانَ kāna [are] سَعۡيُهُم saʿyuhum their effort مَّشۡكُورٗا mashkūran (is) appreciated
waman arāda l-ākhirata wasaʿā lahā saʿyahā wahuwa mu'minun fa-ulāika kāna saʿyuhum mashkūran
But whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it accordingly, and is a ˹true˺ believer, it is they whose striving will be appreciated.
كُلّٗا kullan (To) each نُّمِدُّ numiddu We extend هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ hāulāi (to) these وَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ wahāulāi and (to) these مِنۡ min from عَطَآءِ ʿaṭāi (the) gift رَبِّكَۚ rabbika (of) your Lord وَمَا wamā And not كَانَ kāna is عَطَآءُ ʿaṭāu (the) gift رَبِّكَ rabbika (of) your Lord مَحۡظُورًا maḥẓūran restricted
kullan numiddu hāulāi wahāulāi min ʿaṭāi rabbika wamā kāna ʿaṭāu rabbika maḥẓūran
We provide both the former and the latter from the bounty of your Lord. And the bounty of your Lord can never be withheld.
ٱنظُرۡ unẓur See كَيۡفَ kayfa how فَضَّلۡنَا faḍḍalnā We preferred بَعۡضَهُمۡ baʿḍahum some of them عَلَىٰ ʿalā over بَعۡضٖۚ baʿḍin others وَلَلۡأٓخِرَةُ walalākhiratu And surely the Hereafter أَكۡبَرُ akbaru (is) greater دَرَجَٰتٖ darajātin (in) degrees وَأَكۡبَرُ wa-akbaru and greater تَفۡضِيلٗا tafḍīlan (in) excellence
unẓur kayfa faḍḍalnā baʿḍahum ʿalā baʿḍin walalākhiratu akbaru darajātin wa-akbaru tafḍīlan
See how We have favoured some over others ˹in this life˺, but the Hereafter is certainly far greater in rank and in favour.
لَّا lā (Do) not تَجۡعَلۡ tajʿal make مَعَ maʿa with ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah إِلَٰهًا ilāhan god ءَاخَرَ ākhara another فَتَقۡعُدَ fataqʿuda lest you will sit مَذۡمُومٗا madhmūman disgraced مَّخۡذُولٗا makhdhūlan forsaken
lā tajʿal maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara fataqʿuda madhmūman makhdhūlan
Do not set up any other god with Allah, or you will end up condemned, abandoned.
۞ وَقَضَىٰ waqaḍā And has decreed رَبُّكَ rabbuka your Lord أَلَّا allā that (do) not تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ taʿbudū worship إِلَّآ illā except إِيَّاهُ iyyāhu Him Alone وَبِٱلۡوَٰلِدَيۡنِ wabil-wālidayni and to the parents إِحۡسَٰنًاۚ iḥ'sānan (be) good إِمَّا immā Whether يَبۡلُغَنَّ yablughanna reach عِندَكَ ʿindaka with you ٱلۡكِبَرَ l-kibara the old age أَحَدُهُمَآ aḥaduhumā one of them أَوۡ aw or كِلَاهُمَا kilāhumā both of them فَلَا falā then (do) not تَقُل taqul say لَّهُمَآ lahumā to both of them أُفّٖ uffin a word of disrespect وَلَا walā and (do) not تَنۡهَرۡهُمَا tanharhumā repel them وَقُل waqul but speak لَّهُمَا lahumā to them قَوۡلٗا qawlan a word كَرِيمٗا karīman noble
waqaḍā rabbuka allā taʿbudū illā iyyāhu wabil-wālidayni iḥ'sānan immā yablughanna ʿindaka l-kibara aḥaduhumā aw kilāhumā falā taqul lahumā uffin walā tanharhumā waqul lahumā qawlan karīman
For your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And honour your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your care, never say to them ˹even˺ ‘ugh,’ nor yell at them. Rather, address them respectfully.
وَٱخۡفِضۡ wa-ikh'fiḍ And lower لَهُمَا lahumā to them جَنَاحَ janāḥa (the) wing ٱلذُّلِّ l-dhuli (of) humility مِنَ mina (out) of ٱلرَّحۡمَةِ l-raḥmati [the] mercy وَقُل waqul and say رَّبِّ rabbi My Lord ٱرۡحَمۡهُمَا ir'ḥamhumā Have mercy on both of them كَمَا kamā as رَبَّيَانِي rabbayānī they brought me up صَغِيرٗا ṣaghīran (when I was) small
wa-ikh'fiḍ lahumā janāḥa l-dhuli mina l-raḥmati waqul rabbi ir'ḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīran
And be humble with them out of mercy, and pray, “My Lord! Be merciful to them as they raised me when I was young.”
رَّبُّكُمۡ rabbukum Your Lord أَعۡلَمُ aʿlamu (is) most knowing بِمَا bimā of what فِي fī (is) in نُفُوسِكُمۡۚ nufūsikum yourselves إِن in If تَكُونُواْ takūnū you are صَٰلِحِينَ ṣāliḥīna righteous فَإِنَّهُۥ fa-innahu then indeed, He كَانَ kāna is لِلۡأَوَّٰبِينَ lil'awwābīna to those who often turn (to Him) غَفُورٗا ghafūran Most Forgiving
rabbukum aʿlamu bimā fī nufūsikum in takūnū ṣāliḥīna fa-innahu kāna lil'awwābīna ghafūran
Your Lord knows best what is within yourselves. If you are righteous, He is certainly All-Forgiving to those who ˹constantly˺ turn to Him.
وَءَاتِ waāti And give ذَا dhā the relatives ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ l-qur'bā the relatives حَقَّهُۥ ḥaqqahu his right وَٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ wal-mis'kīna and the needy وَٱبۡنَ wa-ib'na and the wayfarer ٱلسَّبِيلِ l-sabīli and the wayfarer وَلَا walā and (do) not تُبَذِّرۡ tubadhir spend تَبۡذِيرًا tabdhīran wastefully
waāti dhā l-qur'bā ḥaqqahu wal-mis'kīna wa-ib'na l-sabīli walā tubadhir tabdhīran
Give to close relatives their due, as well as the poor and ˹needy˺ travellers. And do not spend wastefully.
إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱلۡمُبَذِّرِينَ l-mubadhirīna the spendthrifts كَانُوٓاْ kānū are إِخۡوَٰنَ ikh'wāna brothers ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِۖ l-shayāṭīni (of) the devils وَكَانَ wakāna And is ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ l-shayṭānu the Shaitaan لِرَبِّهِۦ lirabbihi to his Lord كَفُورٗا kafūran ungrateful
inna l-mubadhirīna kānū ikh'wāna l-shayāṭīni wakāna l-shayṭānu lirabbihi kafūran
Surely the wasteful are ˹like˺ brothers to the devils. And the Devil is ever ungrateful to his Lord.
وَإِمَّا wa-immā And if تُعۡرِضَنَّ tuʿ'riḍanna you turn away عَنۡهُمُ ʿanhumu from them ٱبۡتِغَآءَ ib'tighāa seeking رَحۡمَةٖ raḥmatin mercy مِّن min from رَّبِّكَ rabbika your Lord تَرۡجُوهَا tarjūhā which you expect فَقُل faqul then say لَّهُمۡ lahum to them قَوۡلٗا qawlan a word مَّيۡسُورٗا maysūran gentle
wa-immā tuʿ'riḍanna ʿanhumu ib'tighāa raḥmatin min rabbika tarjūhā faqul lahum qawlan maysūran
But if you must turn them down ˹because you lack the means to give˺—while hoping to receive your Lord’s bounty—then ˹at least˺ give them a kind word.
وَلَا walā And (do) not تَجۡعَلۡ tajʿal make يَدَكَ yadaka your hand مَغۡلُولَةً maghlūlatan chained إِلَىٰ ilā to عُنُقِكَ ʿunuqika your neck وَلَا walā and not تَبۡسُطۡهَا tabsuṭ'hā extend it كُلَّ kulla (to its) utmost ٱلۡبَسۡطِ l-basṭi reach فَتَقۡعُدَ fataqʿuda so that you sit مَلُومٗا malūman blameworthy مَّحۡسُورًا maḥsūran insolvent
walā tajʿal yadaka maghlūlatan ilā ʿunuqika walā tabsuṭ'hā kulla l-basṭi fataqʿuda malūman maḥsūran
Do not be so tight-fisted, for you will be blameworthy; nor so open-handed, for you will end up in poverty.
