بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
إِذَا idhā When جَآءَكَ jāaka come to you ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقُونَ l-munāfiqūna the hypocrites قَالُواْ qālū they say نَشۡهَدُ nashhadu We testify إِنَّكَ innaka that you لَرَسُولُ larasūlu (are) surely (the) Messenger ٱللَّهِۗ l-lahi (of) Allah وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah يَعۡلَمُ yaʿlamu knows إِنَّكَ innaka that you لَرَسُولُهُۥ larasūluhu (are) surely His Messenger وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu and Allah يَشۡهَدُ yashhadu testifies إِنَّ inna that ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites لَكَٰذِبُونَ lakādhibūna (are) surely liars
idhā jāaka l-munāfiqūna qālū nashhadu innaka larasūlu l-lahi wal-lahu yaʿlamu innaka larasūluhu wal-lahu yashhadu inna l-munāfiqīna lakādhibūna
When the hypocrites come to you ˹O Prophet˺, they say, “We bear witness that you are certainly the Messenger of Allah”—and surely Allah knows that you are His Messenger—but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are truly liars.
ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ ittakhadhū They take أَيۡمَٰنَهُمۡ aymānahum their oaths جُنَّةٗ junnatan (as) a cover فَصَدُّواْ faṣaddū so they turn away عَن ʿan from سَبِيلِ sabīli (the) Way ٱللَّهِۚ l-lahi (of) Allah إِنَّهُمۡ innahum Indeed, [they] سَآءَ sāa evil is مَا mā what كَانُواْ kānū they used to يَعۡمَلُونَ yaʿmalūna do
ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūna
They have made their ˹false˺ oaths as a shield, hindering ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they do!
ذَٰلِكَ dhālika That بِأَنَّهُمۡ bi-annahum (is) because ءَامَنُواْ āmanū they believed ثُمَّ thumma then كَفَرُواْ kafarū they disbelieved فَطُبِعَ faṭubiʿa so were sealed عَلَىٰ ʿalā [upon] قُلُوبِهِمۡ qulūbihim their hearts فَهُمۡ fahum so they لَا lā (do) not يَفۡقَهُونَ yafqahūna understand
dhālika bi-annahum āmanū thumma kafarū faṭubiʿa ʿalā qulūbihim fahum lā yafqahūna
This is because they believed and then abandoned faith. Therefore, their hearts have been sealed, so they do not comprehend.
۞ وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when رَأَيۡتَهُمۡ ra-aytahum you see them تُعۡجِبُكَ tuʿ'jibuka pleases you أَجۡسَامُهُمۡۖ ajsāmuhum their bodies وَإِن wa-in and if يَقُولُواْ yaqūlū they speak تَسۡمَعۡ tasmaʿ you listen لِقَوۡلِهِمۡۖ liqawlihim to their speech كَأَنَّهُمۡ ka-annahum as if they (were) خُشُبٞ khushubun pieces of wood مُّسَنَّدَةٞۖ musannadatun propped up يَحۡسَبُونَ yaḥsabūna They think كُلَّ kulla every صَيۡحَةٍ ṣayḥatin shout عَلَيۡهِمۡۚ ʿalayhim (is) against them هُمُ humu They ٱلۡعَدُوُّ l-ʿaduwu (are) the enemy فَٱحۡذَرۡهُمۡۚ fa-iḥ'dharhum so beware of them قَٰتَلَهُمُ qātalahumu May destroy them ٱللَّهُۖ l-lahu Allah أَنَّىٰ annā How يُؤۡفَكُونَ yu'fakūna are they deluded
wa-idhā ra-aytahum tuʿ'jibuka ajsāmuhum wa-in yaqūlū tasmaʿ liqawlihim ka-annahum khushubun musannadatun yaḥsabūna kulla ṣayḥatin ʿalayhim humu l-ʿaduwu fa-iḥ'dharhum qātalahumu l-lahu annā yu'fakūna
When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their ˹impressive˺ speech. But they are ˹just˺ like ˹worthless˺ planks of wood leaned ˹against a wall˺. They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded ˹from the truth˺?
وَإِذَا wa-idhā And when قِيلَ qīla it is said لَهُمۡ lahum to them تَعَالَوۡاْ taʿālaw Come يَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ yastaghfir will ask forgiveness لَكُمۡ lakum for you رَسُولُ rasūlu (the) Messenger ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah لَوَّوۡاْ lawwaw They turn aside رُءُوسَهُمۡ ruūsahum their heads وَرَأَيۡتَهُمۡ wara-aytahum and you see them يَصُدُّونَ yaṣuddūna turning away وَهُم wahum while they مُّسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ mus'takbirūna (are) arrogant
wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw yastaghfir lakum rasūlu l-lahi lawwaw ruūsahum wara-aytahum yaṣuddūna wahum mus'takbirūna
When it is said to them, “Come! The Messenger of Allah will pray for you to be forgiven,” they turn their heads ˹in disgust˺, and you see them ˹O Prophet˺ turn away in arrogance.
سَوَآءٌ sawāon (It) is same عَلَيۡهِمۡ ʿalayhim for them أَسۡتَغۡفَرۡتَ astaghfarta whether you ask forgiveness لَهُمۡ lahum for them أَمۡ am or لَمۡ lam (do) not تَسۡتَغۡفِرۡ tastaghfir ask forgiveness لَهُمۡ lahum for them لَن lan Never يَغۡفِرَ yaghfira will forgive ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah لَهُمۡۚ lahum [to] them إِنَّ inna Indeed ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah لَا lā (does) not يَهۡدِي yahdī guide ٱلۡقَوۡمَ l-qawma the people ٱلۡفَٰسِقِينَ l-fāsiqīna the defiantly disobedient
sawāon ʿalayhim astaghfarta lahum am lam tastaghfir lahum lan yaghfira l-lahu lahum inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīna
It is the same whether you pray for their forgiveness or not, Allah will not forgive them. Surely Allah does not guide the rebellious people.
هُمُ humu They ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna (are) those who يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna say لَا lā (Do) not تُنفِقُواْ tunfiqū spend عَلَىٰ ʿalā on مَنۡ man (those) who عِندَ ʿinda (are) with رَسُولِ rasūli (the) Messenger ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah حَتَّىٰ ḥattā until يَنفَضُّواْۗ yanfaḍḍū they disband وَلِلَّهِ walillahi And for Allah خَزَآئِنُ khazāinu (are the) treasures ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ l-samāwāti (of) the heavens وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ wal-arḍi and the earth وَلَٰكِنَّ walākinna but ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites لَا lā (do) not يَفۡقَهُونَ yafqahūna understand
humu alladhīna yaqūlūna lā tunfiqū ʿalā man ʿinda rasūli l-lahi ḥattā yanfaḍḍū walillahi khazāinu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yafqahūna
They are the ones who say ˹to one another˺, “Do not spend ˹anything˺ on those ˹emigrants˺ with the Messenger of Allah so that they will break away ˹from him˺.” But to Allah ˹alone˺ belong the treasuries of the heavens and the earth, yet the hypocrites do not comprehend.
يَقُولُونَ yaqūlūna They say لَئِن la-in If رَّجَعۡنَآ rajaʿnā we return إِلَى ilā to ٱلۡمَدِينَةِ l-madīnati Al-Madinah لَيُخۡرِجَنَّ layukh'rijanna surely, will expel ٱلۡأَعَزُّ l-aʿazu the more honorable مِنۡهَا min'hā from it ٱلۡأَذَلَّۚ l-adhala the more humble وَلِلَّهِ walillahi But for Allah ٱلۡعِزَّةُ l-ʿizatu (is) the honor وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ walirasūlihi and for His Messenger وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ walil'mu'minīna and for the believers وَلَٰكِنَّ walākinna but ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ l-munāfiqīna the hypocrites لَا lā (do) not يَعۡلَمُونَ yaʿlamūna know
yaqūlūna la-in rajaʿnā ilā l-madīnati layukh'rijanna l-aʿazu min'hā l-adhala walillahi l-ʿizatu walirasūlihi walil'mu'minīna walākinna l-munāfiqīna lā yaʿlamūna
They say, “If we return to Medina, the honourable will definitely expel the inferior.” But all honour and power belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, yet the hypocrites do not know.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا yāayyuhā O ٱلَّذِينَ alladhīna you (who) ءَامَنُواْ āmanū believe لَا lā (Let) not تُلۡهِكُمۡ tul'hikum divert you أَمۡوَٰلُكُمۡ amwālukum your wealth وَلَآ walā and not أَوۡلَٰدُكُمۡ awlādukum your children عَن ʿan from ذِكۡرِ dhik'ri (the) remembrance ٱللَّهِۚ l-lahi (of) Allah وَمَن waman And whoever يَفۡعَلۡ yafʿal does ذَٰلِكَ dhālika that فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those هُمُ humu [they] ٱلۡخَٰسِرُونَ l-khāsirūna (are) the losers
yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tul'hikum amwālukum walā awlādukum ʿan dhik'ri l-lahi waman yafʿal dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-khāsirūna
O believers! Do not let your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. For whoever does so, it is they who are the ˹true˺ losers.
وَأَنفِقُواْ wa-anfiqū And spend مِن min from مَّا mā what رَزَقۡنَٰكُم razaqnākum We have provided you مِّن min from قَبۡلِ qabli before أَن an [that] يَأۡتِيَ yatiya comes أَحَدَكُمُ aḥadakumu (to) one of you ٱلۡمَوۡتُ l-mawtu the death فَيَقُولَ fayaqūla and he says رَبِّ rabbi My Lord لَوۡلَآ lawlā Why not أَخَّرۡتَنِيٓ akhartanī You delay me إِلَىٰٓ ilā for أَجَلٖ ajalin a term قَرِيبٖ qarībin near فَأَصَّدَّقَ fa-aṣṣaddaqa so I would give charity وَأَكُن wa-akun and be مِّنَ mina among ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ l-ṣāliḥīna the righteous
wa-anfiqū min mā razaqnākum min qabli an yatiya aḥadakumu l-mawtu fayaqūla rabbi lawlā akhartanī ilā ajalin qarībin fa-aṣṣaddaqa wa-akun mina l-ṣāliḥīna
And donate from what We have provided for you before death comes to one of you, and you cry, “My Lord! If only You delayed me for a short while, I would give in charity and be one of the righteous.”
وَلَن walan But never يُؤَخِّرَ yu-akhira will (be) delayed ٱللَّهُ l-lahu (by) Allah نَفۡسًا nafsan a soul إِذَا idhā when جَآءَ jāa has come أَجَلُهَاۚ ajaluhā its term وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah خَبِيرُۢ khabīrun (is) All-Aware بِمَا bimā of what تَعۡمَلُونَ taʿmalūna you do
walan yu-akhira l-lahu nafsan idhā jāa ajaluhā wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūna
But Allah never delays a soul when its appointed time comes. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
