عَمَّʿammaAbout whatيَتَسَآءَلُونَyatasāalūnaare they asking one another

ʿamma yatasāalūna

What are they asking one another about?

عَنِʿaniAboutٱلنَّبَإِl-naba-ithe Newsٱلۡعَظِيمِl-ʿaẓīmithe Great

ʿani l-naba-i l-ʿaẓīmi

About the momentous news,

ٱلَّذِيalladhī(About) whichهُمۡhumtheyفِيهِfīhi(are) concerning itمُخۡتَلِفُونَmukh'talifūna(in) disagreement

alladhī hum fīhi mukh'talifūna

over which they disagree.

كـَلَّاkallāNayسَيَعۡلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know

kallā sayaʿlamūna

But no! They will come to know.

ثُمَّthummaThenكـَلَّاkallāNayسَيَعۡلَمُونَsayaʿlamūna(soon) they will know

thumma kallā sayaʿlamūna

Again, no! They will come to know.

أَلَمۡalamHave notنَجۡعَلِnajʿaliWe madeٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍathe earthمِهَٰدٗاmihādana resting place

alam najʿali l-arḍa mihādan

Have We not smoothed out the earth ˹like a bed˺,

وَٱلۡجِبَالَwal-jibālaAnd the mountainsأَوۡتَادٗاawtādan(as) pegs

wal-jibāla awtādan

and ˹made˺ the mountains as ˹its˺ pegs,

وَخَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡwakhalaqnākumAnd We created youأَزۡوَٰجٗاazwājan(in) pairs

wakhalaqnākum azwājan

and created you in pairs,

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeنَوۡمَكُمۡnawmakumyour sleepسُبَاتٗاsubātan(for) rest

wajaʿalnā nawmakum subātan

and made your sleep for rest,

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeٱلَّيۡلَal-laylathe nightلِبَاسٗاlibāsan(as) covering

wajaʿalnā al-layla libāsan

and made the night as a cover,

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeٱلنَّهَارَl-nahārathe dayمَعَاشٗاmaʿāshan(for) livelihood

wajaʿalnā l-nahāra maʿāshan

and made the day for livelihood,

وَبَنَيۡنَاwabanaynāAnd We constructedفَوۡقَكُمۡfawqakumover youسَبۡعٗاsabʿansevenشِدَادٗاshidādanstrong

wabanaynā fawqakum sabʿan shidādan

and built above you seven mighty ˹heavens˺,

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We placedسِرَاجٗاsirājana lampوَهَّاجٗاwahhājanburning

wajaʿalnā sirājan wahhājan

and placed ˹in them˺ a shining lamp,

وَأَنزَلۡنَاwa-anzalnāAnd We sent downمِنَminafromٱلۡمُعۡصِرَٰتِl-muʿ'ṣirātithe rain cloudsمَآءٗmāanwaterثَجَّاجٗاthajjājanpouring abundantly

wa-anzalnā mina l-muʿ'ṣirāti māan thajjājan

and sent down from rainclouds pouring water,

لِّنُخۡرِجَlinukh'rijaThat We may bring forthبِهِۦbihitherebyحَبّٗاḥabbangrainوَنَبَاتٗاwanabātanand vegetation

linukh'rija bihi ḥabban wanabātan

producing by it grain and ˹various˺ plants,

وَجَنَّٰتٍwajannātinAnd gardensأَلۡفَافًاalfāfan(of) thick foliage

wajannātin alfāfan

and dense orchards?

إِنَّinnaIndeedيَوۡمَyawma(the) Dayٱلۡفَصۡلِl-faṣli(of) the Judgmentكَانَkānaisمِيقَٰتٗاmīqātanan appointed time

inna yawma l-faṣli kāna mīqātan

Indeed, the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision is an appointed time—

يَوۡمَyawma(The) Dayيُنفَخُyunfakhu(in which) shall be blownفِيfīinٱلصُّورِl-ṣūrithe trumpetفَتَأۡتُونَfatatūnaand you will come forthأَفۡوَاجٗاafwājan(in) crowds

yawma yunfakhu fī l-ṣūri fatatūna afwājan

˹it is˺ the Day the Trumpet will be blown, and you will ˹all˺ come forth in crowds.

وَفُتِحَتِwafutiḥatiAnd is openedٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفَكَانَتۡfakānatand becomesأَبۡوَٰبٗاabwābangateways

wafutiḥati l-samāu fakānat abwāban

The sky will be ˹split˺ open, becoming ˹many˺ gates,

وَسُيِّرَتِwasuyyiratiAnd are movedٱلۡجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsفَكَانَتۡfakānatand becomeسَرَابًاsarābana mirage

wasuyyirati l-jibālu fakānat sarāban

and the mountains will be blown away, becoming ˹like˺ a mirage.

إِنَّinnaIndeedجَهَنَّمَjahannamaHellكَانَتۡkānatisمِرۡصَادٗاmir'ṣādanlying in wait

inna jahannama kānat mir'ṣādan

Indeed, Hell is lying in ambush

لِّلطَّٰغِينَlilṭṭāghīnaFor the transgressorsمَـَٔابٗاmaābana place of return

lilṭṭāghīna maāban

as a home for the transgressors,

لَّٰبِثِينَlābithīna(They will) be remainingفِيهَآfīhāthereinأَحۡقَابٗاaḥqāban(for) ages

lābithīna fīhā aḥqāban

where they will remain for ˹endless˺ ages.

لَّاlāNotيَذُوقُونَyadhūqūnathey will tasteفِيهَاfīhāthereinبَرۡدٗاbardancoolnessوَلَاwalāand notشَرَابًاsharābanany drink

lā yadhūqūna fīhā bardan walā sharāban

There they will not taste any coolness or drink,

إِلَّاillāExceptحَمِيمٗاḥamīmanscalding waterوَغَسَّاقٗاwaghassāqanand purulence

illā ḥamīman waghassāqan

except boiling water and ˹oozing˺ pus—

جَزَآءٗjazāanA recompenseوِفَاقًاwifāqanappropriate

jazāan wifāqan

a fitting reward.

إِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, theyكَانُواْkānūwereلَاlānotيَرۡجُونَyarjūnaexpectingحِسَابٗاḥisābanan account

innahum kānū lā yarjūna ḥisāban

For they never expected any reckoning,

وَكَذَّبُواْwakadhabūAnd they deniedبِـَٔايَٰتِنَاbiāyātināOur Signsكِذَّابٗاkidhāban(with) denial

wakadhabū biāyātinā kidhāban

and totally rejected Our signs.

وَكُلَّwakullaAnd everyشَيۡءٍshayinthingأَحۡصَيۡنَٰهُaḥṣaynāhuWe have enumerated itكِتَٰبٗاkitāban(in) a Book

wakulla shayin aḥṣaynāhu kitāban

And We have everything recorded precisely.

فَذُوقُواْfadhūqūSo tasteفَلَنfalanand neverنَّزِيدَكُمۡnazīdakumWe will increase youإِلَّاillāexceptعَذَابًاʿadhāban(in) punishment

fadhūqū falan nazīdakum illā ʿadhāban

˹So the deniers will be told,˺ “Taste ˹the punishment˺, for all you will get from Us is more torment.”
