Al-Mursalat

وَٱلۡمُرۡسَلَٰتِwal-mur'salātiBy the ones sent forthعُرۡفٗاʿur'fanone after another

wal-mur'salāti ʿur'fan

By those ˹winds˺ sent forth successively,

فَٱلۡعَٰصِفَٰتِfal-ʿāṣifātiAnd the winds that blowعَصۡفٗاʿaṣfanviolently

fal-ʿāṣifāti ʿaṣfan

and those blowing violently,

وَٱلنَّٰشِرَٰتِwal-nāshirātiAnd the ones that scatterنَشۡرٗاnashranfar and wide

wal-nāshirāti nashran

and those scattering ˹rainclouds˺ widely!

فَٱلۡفَٰرِقَٰتِfal-fāriqātiAnd those who separateفَرۡقٗاfarqan(by the) Criterion

fal-fāriqāti farqan

And ˹by˺ those ˹angels˺ fully distinguishing ˹truth from falsehood˺,

فَٱلۡمُلۡقِيَٰتِfal-mul'qiyātiAnd those who bring downذِكۡرًاdhik'ran(the) Reminder

fal-mul'qiyāti dhik'ran

and those delivering revelation,

عُذۡرًاʿudh'ran(As) justificationأَوۡaworنُذۡرًاnudh'ranwarning

ʿudh'ran aw nudh'ran

ending excuses and giving warnings.

إِنَّمَاinnamāIndeed, whatتُوعَدُونَtūʿadūnayou are promisedلَوَٰقِعٞlawāqiʿunwill surely occur

innamā tūʿadūna lawāqiʿun

Surely, what you are promised will come to pass.

فَإِذَاfa-idhāSo whenٱلنُّجُومُl-nujūmuthe starsطُمِسَتۡṭumisatare obliterated

fa-idhā l-nujūmu ṭumisat

So when the stars are put out,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe heavenفُرِجَتۡfurijatis cleft asunder

wa-idhā l-samāu furijat

and the sky is torn apart,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلۡجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsنُسِفَتۡnusifatare blown away

wa-idhā l-jibālu nusifat

and the mountains are blown away,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenٱلرُّسُلُl-rusuluthe Messengersأُقِّتَتۡuqqitatare gathered to their appointed time

wa-idhā l-rusulu uqqitat

and the messengers’ time ˹to testify˺ comes up—

لِأَيِّli-ayyiFor whatيَوۡمٍyawminDayأُجِّلَتۡujjilatare (these) postponed

li-ayyi yawmin ujjilat

for which Day has all this been set?

لِيَوۡمِliyawmiFor (the) Dayٱلۡفَصۡلِl-faṣli(of) Judgment

liyawmi l-faṣli

For the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision!

وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدۡرَىٰكَadrākawill make you knowمَاmāwhatيَوۡمُyawmu(is the) Dayٱلۡفَصۡلِl-faṣli(of) the Judgment

wamā adrāka mā yawmu l-faṣli

And what will make you realize what the Day of Decision is?

وَيۡلٞwaylunWoeيَوۡمَئِذٖyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers

waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna

Woe on that Day to the deniers!

أَلَمۡalamDid notنُهۡلِكِnuh'likiWe destroyٱلۡأَوَّلِينَl-awalīnathe former (people)

alam nuh'liki l-awalīna

Did We not destroy earlier disbelievers?

ثُمَّthummaThenنُتۡبِعُهُمُnut'biʿuhumuWe follow them upٱلۡأٓخِرِينَl-ākhirīna(with) the later ones

thumma nut'biʿuhumu l-ākhirīna

And We will make the later disbelievers follow them.

كَذَٰلِكَkadhālikaThusنَفۡعَلُnafʿaluWe dealبِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَbil-muj'rimīnawith the criminals

kadhālika nafʿalu bil-muj'rimīna

This is how We deal with the wicked.

وَيۡلٞwaylunWoeيَوۡمَئِذٖyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers

waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna

Woe on that Day to the deniers!

أَلَمۡalamDid notنَخۡلُقكُّمnakhluqkkumWe create youمِّنminfromمَّآءٖmāina waterمَّهِينٖmahīnindespicable

alam nakhluqkkum min māin mahīnin

Did We not create you from a humble fluid,

فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُfajaʿalnāhuThen We placed itفِيfīinقَرَارٖqarārinan abodeمَّكِينٍmakīninsafe

fajaʿalnāhu fī qarārin makīnin

placing it in a secure place

إِلَىٰilāForقَدَرٖqadarina periodمَّعۡلُومٖmaʿlūminknown

ilā qadarin maʿlūmin

until an appointed time?

فَقَدَرۡنَاfaqadarnāSo We measuredفَنِعۡمَfaniʿ'maand Bestٱلۡقَٰدِرُونَl-qādirūna(are We to) measure

faqadarnā faniʿ'ma l-qādirūna

We ˹perfectly˺ ordained ˹its development˺. How excellent are We in doing so!

وَيۡلٞwaylunWoeيَوۡمَئِذٖyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers

waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna

Woe on that Day to the deniers!

أَلَمۡalamHave notنَجۡعَلِnajʿaliWe madeٱلۡأَرۡضَl-arḍathe earthكِفَاتًاkifātana receptacle

alam najʿali l-arḍa kifātan

Have We not made the earth a lodging

أَحۡيَآءٗaḥyāan(For the) livingوَأَمۡوَٰتٗاwa-amwātanand (the) dead

aḥyāan wa-amwātan

for the living and the dead,

وَجَعَلۡنَاwajaʿalnāAnd We madeفِيهَاfīhāthereinرَوَٰسِيَrawāsiyafirmly set mountainsشَٰمِخَٰتٖshāmikhātinloftyوَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰكُمwa-asqaynākumand We gave you to drinkمَّآءٗmāanwater فُرَاتٗاfurātansweet

wajaʿalnā fīhā rawāsiya shāmikhātin wa-asqaynākum māan furātan

and placed upon it towering, firm mountains, and given you fresh water to drink?

وَيۡلٞwaylunWoeيَوۡمَئِذٖyawma-idhinthat Dayلِّلۡمُكَذِّبِينَlil'mukadhibīnato the deniers

waylun yawma-idhin lil'mukadhibīna

Woe on that Day to the deniers!

ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْinṭaliqūProceedإِلَىٰilātoمَاmāwhatكُنتُمkuntumyou used toبِهِۦbihiin itتُكَذِّبُونَtukadhibūnadeny

inṭaliqū ilā mā kuntum bihi tukadhibūna

˹The disbelievers will be told,˺ “Proceed into that ˹Fire˺ which you used to deny!

ٱنطَلِقُوٓاْinṭaliqūProceedإِلَىٰilātoظِلّٖẓillina shadowذِيdhīhavingثَلَٰثِthalāthithreeشُعَبٖshuʿabincolumns

inṭaliqū ilā ẓillin dhī thalāthi shuʿabin

Proceed into the shade ˹of smoke˺ which rises in three columns,
