At-Tariq

وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiBy the skyوَٱلطَّارِقِwal-ṭāriqiand the night comer

wal-samāi wal-ṭāriqi

By the heaven and the nightly star!

وَمَآwamāAnd whatأَدۡرَىٰكَadrākacan make you knowمَاmāwhatٱلطَّارِقُl-ṭāriquthe night comer (is)

wamā adrāka mā l-ṭāriqu

And what will make you realize what the nightly star is?

ٱلنَّجۡمُal-najmu(It is) the starٱلثَّاقِبُl-thāqibuthe piercing

al-najmu l-thāqibu

˹It is˺ the star of piercing brightness.

إِنinNotكُلُّkullu(is) everyنَفۡسٖnafsinsoulلَّمَّاlammābutعَلَيۡهَاʿalayhāover itحَافِظٞḥāfiẓun(is) a protector

in kullu nafsin lammā ʿalayhā ḥāfiẓun

There is no soul without a vigilant angel ˹recording everything˺.

فَلۡيَنظُرِfalyanẓuriSo let seeٱلۡإِنسَٰنُl-insānumanمِمَّmimmafrom whatخُلِقَkhuliqahe is created

falyanẓuri l-insānu mimma khuliqa

Let people then consider what they were created from!

خُلِقَkhuliqaHe is createdمِنminfromمَّآءٖmāina waterدَافِقٖdāfiqinejected

khuliqa min māin dāfiqin

˹They were˺ created from a spurting fluid,

يَخۡرُجُyakhrujuComing forthمِنۢminfromبَيۡنِbaynibetweenٱلصُّلۡبِl-ṣul'bithe backboneوَٱلتَّرَآئِبِwal-tarāibiand the ribs

yakhruju min bayni l-ṣul'bi wal-tarāibi

stemming from between the backbone and the ribcage.

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, Heعَلَىٰʿalātoرَجۡعِهِۦrajʿihireturn himلَقَادِرٞlaqādirun(is) Able

innahu ʿalā rajʿihi laqādirun

Surely He is fully capable of bringing them back ˹to life˺

يَوۡمَyawma(The) Dayتُبۡلَىtub'lāwill be testedٱلسَّرَآئِرُl-sarāiruthe secrets

yawma tub'lā l-sarāiru

on the Day all secrets will be disclosed.

فَمَاfamāThen notلَهُۥlahu(is) for himمِنminanyقُوَّةٖquwwatinpowerوَلَاwalāand notنَاصِرٖnāṣirinany helper

famā lahu min quwwatin walā nāṣirin

Then one will have neither power nor ˹any˺ helper.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiBy the skyذَاتِdhātiwhichٱلرَّجۡعِl-rajʿireturns

wal-samāi dhāti l-rajʿi

By the sky with its recurring cycles,

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِwal-arḍiAnd the earthذَاتِdhātiwhichٱلصَّدۡعِl-ṣadʿicracks open

wal-arḍi dhāti l-ṣadʿi

and the earth with its sprouting plants!

إِنَّهُۥinnahuIndeed, itلَقَوۡلٞlaqawlun(is) surely a Wordفَصۡلٞfaṣlundecisive

innahu laqawlun faṣlun

Surely this ˹Quran˺ is a decisive word,

وَمَاwamāAnd notهُوَhuwaitبِٱلۡهَزۡلِbil-hazli(is) for amusement

wamā huwa bil-hazli

and is not to be taken lightly.

إِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, theyيَكِيدُونَyakīdūnaare plottingكَيۡدٗاkaydana plot

innahum yakīdūna kaydan

They are certainly devising ˹evil˺ plans,

وَأَكِيدُwa-akīduBut I am planningكَيۡدٗاkaydana plan

wa-akīdu kaydan

but I too am planning.

فَمَهِّلِfamahhiliSo give respiteٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَl-kāfirīna(to) the disbelieversأَمۡهِلۡهُمۡamhil'humGive respite to them رُوَيۡدَۢاruwaydanlittle

famahhili l-kāfirīna amhil'hum ruwaydan

So bear with the disbelievers ˹O Prophet˺. Let them be for ˹just˺ a little while.
