بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
إِنَّآ innā Indeed, We أَرۡسَلۡنَا arsalnā [We] sent نُوحًا nūḥan Nuh إِلَىٰ ilā to قَوۡمِهِۦٓ qawmihi his people أَنۡ an that أَنذِرۡ andhir Warn قَوۡمَكَ qawmaka your people مِن min from قَبۡلِ qabli before أَن an [that] يَأۡتِيَهُمۡ yatiyahum comes to them عَذَابٌ ʿadhābun a punishment أَلِيمٞ alīmun painful
innā arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi an andhir qawmaka min qabli an yatiyahum ʿadhābun alīmun
Indeed, We sent Noah to his people ˹saying to him˺, “Warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them.”
قَالَ qāla He said يَٰقَوۡمِ yāqawmi O my people إِنِّي innī Indeed, I am لَكُمۡ lakum to you نَذِيرٞ nadhīrun a warner مُّبِينٌ mubīnun clear
qāla yāqawmi innī lakum nadhīrun mubīnun
Noah proclaimed, “O my people! I am truly sent to you with a clear warning:
أَنِ ani That ٱعۡبُدُواْ uʿ'budū Worship ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah وَٱتَّقُوهُ wa-ittaqūhu and fear Him وَأَطِيعُونِ wa-aṭīʿūni and obey me
ani uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ittaqūhu wa-aṭīʿūni
worship Allah ˹alone˺, fear Him, and obey me.
يَغۡفِرۡ yaghfir He will forgive لَكُم lakum for you مِّن min [of] ذُنُوبِكُمۡ dhunūbikum your sins وَيُؤَخِّرۡكُمۡ wayu-akhir'kum and give you respite إِلَىٰٓ ilā for أَجَلٖ ajalin a term مُّسَمًّىۚ musamman specified إِنَّ inna Indeed أَجَلَ ajala (the) term ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah إِذَا idhā when جَآءَ jāa it comes لَا lā not يُؤَخَّرُۚ yu-akharu is delayed لَوۡ law if كُنتُمۡ kuntum you تَعۡلَمُونَ taʿlamūna know
yaghfir lakum min dhunūbikum wayu-akhir'kum ilā ajalin musamman inna ajala l-lahi idhā jāa lā yu-akharu law kuntum taʿlamūna
He will forgive your sins, and delay your end until the appointed time. Indeed, when the time set by Allah comes, it cannot be delayed, if only you knew!”
قَالَ qāla He said رَبِّ rabbi My Lord إِنِّي innī Indeed, I دَعَوۡتُ daʿawtu invited قَوۡمِي qawmī my people لَيۡلٗا laylan night وَنَهَارٗا wanahāran and day
qāla rabbi innī daʿawtu qawmī laylan wanahāran
He cried, “My Lord! I have surely called my people day and night,
فَلَمۡ falam But not يَزِدۡهُمۡ yazid'hum increased them دُعَآءِيٓ duʿāī my invitation إِلَّا illā except فِرَارٗا firāran (in) flight
falam yazid'hum duʿāī illā firāran
but my calls only made them run farther away.
وَإِنِّي wa-innī And indeed, I كُلَّمَا kullamā every time دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ daʿawtuhum I invited them لِتَغۡفِرَ litaghfira that You may forgive لَهُمۡ lahum them جَعَلُوٓاْ jaʿalū they put أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ aṣābiʿahum their fingers فِيٓ fī in ءَاذَانِهِمۡ ādhānihim their ears وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ wa-is'taghshaw and covered themselves ثِيَابَهُمۡ thiyābahum (with) their garments وَأَصَرُّواْ wa-aṣarrū and persisted وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ wa-is'takbarū and were arrogant ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا is'tik'bāran (with) pride
wa-innī kullamā daʿawtuhum litaghfira lahum jaʿalū aṣābiʿahum fī ādhānihim wa-is'taghshaw thiyābahum wa-aṣarrū wa-is'takbarū is'tik'bāran
And whenever I invite them to be forgiven by You, they press their fingers into their ears, cover themselves with their clothes, persist ˹in denial˺, and act very arrogantly.
ثُمَّ thumma Then إِنِّي innī indeed, I دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ daʿawtuhum invited them جِهَارٗا jihāran publicly
thumma innī daʿawtuhum jihāran
Then I certainly called them openly,
ثُمَّ thumma Then إِنِّيٓ innī indeed, I أَعۡلَنتُ aʿlantu announced لَهُمۡ lahum to them وَأَسۡرَرۡتُ wa-asrartu and I confided لَهُمۡ lahum to them إِسۡرَارٗا is'rāran secretly
thumma innī aʿlantu lahum wa-asrartu lahum is'rāran
then I surely preached to them publicly and privately,
فَقُلۡتُ faqul'tu Then I said ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ is'taghfirū Ask forgiveness رَبَّكُمۡ rabbakum (from) your Lord إِنَّهُۥ innahu Indeed, He كَانَ kāna is غَفَّارٗا ghaffāran Oft-Forgiving
faqul'tu is'taghfirū rabbakum innahu kāna ghaffāran
saying, ‘Seek your Lord’s forgiveness, ˹for˺ He is truly Most Forgiving.
يُرۡسِلِ yur'sili He will send down ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa (rain from) the sky عَلَيۡكُم ʿalaykum upon you مِّدۡرَارٗا mid'rāran (in) abundance
yur'sili l-samāa ʿalaykum mid'rāran
He will shower you with abundant rain,
وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم wayum'did'kum And provide you بِأَمۡوَٰلٖ bi-amwālin with wealth وَبَنِينَ wabanīna and children وَيَجۡعَل wayajʿal and make لَّكُمۡ lakum for you جَنَّٰتٖ jannātin gardens وَيَجۡعَل wayajʿal and make لَّكُمۡ lakum for you أَنۡهَٰرٗا anhāran rivers
wayum'did'kum bi-amwālin wabanīna wayajʿal lakum jannātin wayajʿal lakum anhāran
supply you with wealth and children, and give you gardens as well as rivers.
مَّا mā What لَكُمۡ lakum (is) for you لَا lā not تَرۡجُونَ tarjūna you attribute لِلَّهِ lillahi to Allah وَقَارٗا waqāran grandeur
mā lakum lā tarjūna lillahi waqāran
What is the matter with you that you are not in awe of the Majesty of Allah,
وَقَدۡ waqad And indeed خَلَقَكُمۡ khalaqakum He created you أَطۡوَارًا aṭwāran (in) stages
waqad khalaqakum aṭwāran
when He truly created you in stages ˹of development˺?
أَلَمۡ alam Do not تَرَوۡاْ taraw you see كَيۡفَ kayfa how خَلَقَ khalaqa did create ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah سَبۡعَ sabʿa (the) seven سَمَٰوَٰتٖ samāwātin heavens طِبَاقٗا ṭibāqan (in) layers
alam taraw kayfa khalaqa l-lahu sabʿa samāwātin ṭibāqan
Do you not see how Allah created seven heavens, one above the other,
وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala And made ٱلۡقَمَرَ l-qamara the moon فِيهِنَّ fīhinna therein نُورٗا nūran a light وَجَعَلَ wajaʿala and made ٱلشَّمۡسَ l-shamsa the sun سِرَاجٗا sirājan a lamp
wajaʿala l-qamara fīhinna nūran wajaʿala l-shamsa sirājan
placing the moon within them as a ˹reflected˺ light, and the sun as a ˹radiant˺ lamp?
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah أَنۢبَتَكُم anbatakum has caused you to grow مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth نَبَاتٗا nabātan (as) a growth
wal-lahu anbatakum mina l-arḍi nabātan
Allah ˹alone˺ caused you to grow from the earth like a plant.
ثُمَّ thumma Then يُعِيدُكُمۡ yuʿīdukum He will return you فِيهَا fīhā into it وَيُخۡرِجُكُمۡ wayukh'rijukum and bring you forth إِخۡرَاجٗا ikh'rājan (a new) bringing forth
thumma yuʿīdukum fīhā wayukh'rijukum ikh'rājan
Then He will return you to it, and then simply bring you forth ˹again˺.
وَٱللَّهُ wal-lahu And Allah جَعَلَ jaʿala made لَكُمُ lakumu for you ٱلۡأَرۡضَ l-arḍa the earth بِسَاطٗا bisāṭan an expanse
wal-lahu jaʿala lakumu l-arḍa bisāṭan
And Allah ˹alone˺ spread out the earth for you
لِّتَسۡلُكُواْ litaslukū That you may go along مِنۡهَا min'hā therein سُبُلٗا subulan (in) paths فِجَاجٗا fijājan wide
litaslukū min'hā subulan fijājan
to walk along its spacious pathways.’”
قَالَ qāla Said نُوحٞ nūḥun Nuh رَّبِّ rabbi My Lord إِنَّهُمۡ innahum Indeed, they عَصَوۡنِي ʿaṣawnī disobeyed me وَٱتَّبَعُواْ wa-ittabaʿū and followed مَن man (the one) who لَّمۡ lam (did) not يَزِدۡهُ yazid'hu increase him مَالُهُۥ māluhu his wealth وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ wawaladuhu and his children إِلَّا illā except خَسَارٗا khasāran (in) loss
qāla nūḥun rabbi innahum ʿaṣawnī wa-ittabaʿū man lam yazid'hu māluhu wawaladuhu illā khasāran
˹Eventually,˺ Noah cried, “My Lord! They have certainly persisted in disobeying me, and followed ˹instead˺ those ˹elite˺ whose ˹abundant˺ wealth and children only increase them in loss,
وَمَكَرُواْ wamakarū And they have planned مَكۡرٗا makran a plan كُبَّارٗا kubbāran great
wamakarū makran kubbāran
and who have devised a tremendous plot,
وَقَالُواْ waqālū And they said لَا lā (Do) not تَذَرُنَّ tadharunna leave ءَالِهَتَكُمۡ ālihatakum your gods وَلَا walā and (do) not تَذَرُنَّ tadharunna leave وَدّٗا waddan Wadd وَلَا walā and not سُوَاعٗا suwāʿan Suwa وَلَا walā and not يَغُوثَ yaghūtha Yaguth وَيَعُوقَ wayaʿūqa and Yauq وَنَسۡرٗا wanasran and Nasr
waqālū lā tadharunna ālihatakum walā tadharunna waddan walā suwāʿan walā yaghūtha wayaʿūqa wanasran
urging ˹their followers˺, ‘Do not abandon your idols—especially Wadd, Suwâ’, Yaghûth, Ya’ûq, and Nasr.’
وَقَدۡ waqad And indeed أَضَلُّواْ aḍallū they have led astray كَثِيرٗاۖ kathīran many وَلَا walā And not تَزِدِ tazidi increase ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers إِلَّا illā except ضَلَٰلٗا ḍalālan (in) error
waqad aḍallū kathīran walā tazidi l-ẓālimīna illā ḍalālan
Those ˹elite˺ have already led many astray. So ˹O Lord˺, only allow the wrongdoers to stray farther away.”
مِّمَّا mimmā Because of خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِهِمۡ khaṭīātihim their sins أُغۡرِقُواْ ugh'riqū they were drowned فَأُدۡخِلُواْ fa-ud'khilū then made to enter نَارٗا nāran (the) Fire فَلَمۡ falam and not يَجِدُواْ yajidū they found لَهُم lahum for themselves مِّن min from دُونِ dūni besides ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah أَنصَارٗا anṣāran any helpers
mimmā khaṭīātihim ugh'riqū fa-ud'khilū nāran falam yajidū lahum min dūni l-lahi anṣāran
So because of their sins, they were drowned, then admitted into the Fire. And they found none to help them against Allah.
وَقَالَ waqāla And said نُوحٞ nūḥun Nuh رَّبِّ rabbi My Lord لَا lā (Do) not تَذَرۡ tadhar leave عَلَى ʿalā on ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth مِنَ mina any ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ l-kāfirīna (of) the disbelievers دَيَّارًا dayyāran (as) an inhabitant
waqāla nūḥun rabbi lā tadhar ʿalā l-arḍi mina l-kāfirīna dayyāran
Noah had prayed, “My Lord! Do not leave a single disbeliever on earth.
إِنَّكَ innaka Indeed, You إِن in if تَذَرۡهُمۡ tadharhum You leave them يُضِلُّواْ yuḍillū they will mislead عِبَادَكَ ʿibādaka Your slaves وَلَا walā and not يَلِدُوٓاْ yalidū they will beget إِلَّا illā except فَاجِرٗا fājiran a wicked كَفَّارٗا kaffāran a disbeliever
innaka in tadharhum yuḍillū ʿibādaka walā yalidū illā fājiran kaffāran
For if You spare ˹any of˺ them, they will certainly mislead Your servants, and give birth only to ˹wicked˺ sinners, staunch disbelievers.
رَّبِّ rabbi My Lord ٱغۡفِرۡ igh'fir Forgive لِي lī me وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ waliwālidayya and my parents وَلِمَن waliman and whoever دَخَلَ dakhala enters بَيۡتِيَ baytiya my house مُؤۡمِنٗا mu'minan a believer وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ walil'mu'minīna and the believing men وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۖ wal-mu'mināti and the believing women وَلَا walā And (do) not تَزِدِ tazidi increase ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ l-ẓālimīna the wrongdoers إِلَّا illā except تَبَارَۢا tabāran (in) destruction
rabbi igh'fir lī waliwālidayya waliman dakhala baytiya mu'minan walil'mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti walā tazidi l-ẓālimīna illā tabāran
My Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith, and ˹all˺ believing men and women. And increase the wrongdoers only in destruction.”
