بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Read Word by Word
قُلۡ qul Say أُوحِيَ ūḥiya It has been revealed إِلَيَّ ilayya to me أَنَّهُ annahu that ٱسۡتَمَعَ is'tamaʿa listened نَفَرٞ nafarun a group مِّنَ mina of ٱلۡجِنِّ l-jini the jinn فَقَالُوٓاْ faqālū and they said إِنَّا innā Indeed, we سَمِعۡنَا samiʿ'nā heard قُرۡءَانًا qur'ānan a Quran عَجَبٗا ʿajaban amazing
qul ūḥiya ilayya annahu is'tamaʿa nafarun mina l-jini faqālū innā samiʿ'nā qur'ānan ʿajaban
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened ˹to the Quran,˺ and said ˹to their fellow jinn˺: ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous recitation.
يَهۡدِيٓ yahdī It guides إِلَى ilā to ٱلرُّشۡدِ l-rush'di the right way فَـَٔامَنَّا faāmannā so we believe بِهِۦۖ bihi in it وَلَن walan and never نُّشۡرِكَ nush'rika we will associate بِرَبِّنَآ birabbinā with our Lord أَحَدٗا aḥadan anyone
yahdī ilā l-rush'di faāmannā bihi walan nush'rika birabbinā aḥadan
It leads to Right Guidance so we believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord ˹in worship˺.
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that He تَعَٰلَىٰ taʿālā Exalted is جَدُّ jaddu (the) Majesty رَبِّنَا rabbinā (of) our Lord مَا mā not ٱتَّخَذَ ittakhadha He has taken صَٰحِبَةٗ ṣāḥibatan a wife وَلَا walā and not وَلَدٗا waladan a son
wa-annahu taʿālā jaddu rabbinā mā ittakhadha ṣāḥibatan walā waladan
˹Now, we believe that˺ our Lord—Exalted is His Majesty—has neither taken a mate nor offspring,
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that he كَانَ kāna used to يَقُولُ yaqūlu speak سَفِيهُنَا safīhunā the foolish among us عَلَى ʿalā against ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah شَطَطٗا shaṭaṭan an excessive transgression
wa-annahu kāna yaqūlu safīhunā ʿalā l-lahi shaṭaṭan
and that the foolish of us used to utter ˹outrageous˺ falsehoods about Allah.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we ظَنَنَّآ ẓanannā thought أَن an that لَّن lan never تَقُولَ taqūla will say ٱلۡإِنسُ l-insu the men وَٱلۡجِنُّ wal-jinu and the jinn عَلَى ʿalā against ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah كَذِبٗا kadhiban any lie
wa-annā ẓanannā an lan taqūla l-insu wal-jinu ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban
We certainly thought that humans and jinn would never speak lies about Allah.
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that كَانَ kāna (there) were رِجَالٞ rijālun men مِّنَ mina among ٱلۡإِنسِ l-insi mankind يَعُوذُونَ yaʿūdhūna who sought refuge بِرِجَالٖ birijālin in (the) men مِّنَ mina from ٱلۡجِنِّ l-jini the jinn فَزَادُوهُمۡ fazādūhum so they increased them رَهَقٗا rahaqan (in) burden
wa-annahu kāna rijālun mina l-insi yaʿūdhūna birijālin mina l-jini fazādūhum rahaqan
And some men used to seek refuge with some jinn—so they increased each other in wickedness.
وَأَنَّهُمۡ wa-annahum And that they ظَنُّواْ ẓannū thought كَمَا kamā as ظَنَنتُمۡ ẓanantum you thought أَن an that لَّن lan never يَبۡعَثَ yabʿatha will raise ٱللَّهُ l-lahu Allah أَحَدٗا aḥadan anyone
wa-annahum ẓannū kamā ẓanantum an lan yabʿatha l-lahu aḥadan
And those ˹humans˺ thought, just like you ˹jinn˺, that Allah would not resurrect anyone ˹for judgment˺.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we لَمَسۡنَا lamasnā sought to touch ٱلسَّمَآءَ l-samāa the heaven فَوَجَدۡنَٰهَا fawajadnāhā but we found it مُلِئَتۡ muli-at filled (with) حَرَسٗا ḥarasan guards شَدِيدٗا shadīdan severe وَشُهُبٗا washuhuban and flaming fires
wa-annā lamasnā l-samāa fawajadnāhā muli-at ḥarasan shadīdan washuhuban
˹Earlier˺ we tried to reach heaven ˹for news˺, only to find it filled with stern guards and shooting stars.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we كُنَّا kunnā used to نَقۡعُدُ naqʿudu sit مِنۡهَا min'hā there in مَقَٰعِدَ maqāʿida positions لِلسَّمۡعِۖ lilssamʿi for hearing فَمَن faman but (he) who يَسۡتَمِعِ yastamiʿi listens ٱلۡأٓنَ l-āna now يَجِدۡ yajid will find لَهُۥ lahu for him شِهَابٗا shihāban a flaming fire رَّصَدٗا raṣadan waiting
wa-annā kunnā naqʿudu min'hā maqāʿida lilssamʿi faman yastamiʿi l-āna yajid lahu shihāban raṣadan
We used to take up positions there for eavesdropping, but whoever dares eavesdrop now will find a flare lying in wait for them.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we لَا lā not نَدۡرِيٓ nadrī we know أَشَرٌّ asharrun whether evil أُرِيدَ urīda is intended بِمَن biman for (those) who فِي fī (are) in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth أَمۡ am or أَرَادَ arāda intends بِهِمۡ bihim for them رَبُّهُمۡ rabbuhum their Lord رَشَدٗا rashadan a right path
wa-annā lā nadrī asharrun urīda biman fī l-arḍi am arāda bihim rabbuhum rashadan
Now, we have no clue whether evil is intended for those on earth, or their Lord intends for them what is right.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that [we] مِنَّا minnā among us ٱلصَّٰلِحُونَ l-ṣāliḥūna (are) the righteous وَمِنَّا waminnā and among us دُونَ dūna (are) other than ذَٰلِكَۖ dhālika that كُنَّا kunnā We طَرَآئِقَ ṭarāiqa (are on) ways قِدَدٗا qidadan different
wa-annā minnā l-ṣāliḥūna waminnā dūna dhālika kunnā ṭarāiqa qidadan
Among us are those who are righteous and those who are less so. We have been of different factions.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we ظَنَنَّآ ẓanannā [we] have become certain أَن an that لَّن lan never نُّعۡجِزَ nuʿ'jiza we will cause failure ٱللَّهَ l-laha (to) Allah فِي fī in ٱلۡأَرۡضِ l-arḍi the earth وَلَن walan and never نُّعۡجِزَهُۥ nuʿ'jizahu we can escape Him هَرَبٗا haraban (by) flight
wa-annā ẓanannā an lan nuʿ'jiza l-laha fī l-arḍi walan nuʿ'jizahu haraban
˹Now,˺ we truly know that we cannot frustrate Allah on earth, nor can we escape from Him ˹into heaven˺.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that [we] لَمَّا lammā when سَمِعۡنَا samiʿ'nā we heard ٱلۡهُدَىٰٓ l-hudā the Guidance ءَامَنَّا āmannā we believed بِهِۦۖ bihi in it فَمَن faman And whoever يُؤۡمِنۢ yu'min believes بِرَبِّهِۦ birabbihi in his Lord فَلَا falā then not يَخَافُ yakhāfu he will fear بَخۡسٗا bakhsan any loss وَلَا walā and not رَهَقٗا rahaqan any burden
wa-annā lammā samiʿ'nā l-hudā āmannā bihi faman yu'min birabbihi falā yakhāfu bakhsan walā rahaqan
When we heard the guidance ˹of the Quran˺, we ˹readily˺ believed in it. For whoever believes in their Lord will have no fear of being denied ˹a reward˺ or wronged.
وَأَنَّا wa-annā And that we مِنَّا minnā among us ٱلۡمُسۡلِمُونَ l-mus'limūna (are) Muslims وَمِنَّا waminnā and among us ٱلۡقَٰسِطُونَۖ l-qāsiṭūna (are) unjust فَمَنۡ faman And whoever أَسۡلَمَ aslama submits فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ fa-ulāika then those تَحَرَّوۡاْ taḥarraw have sought رَشَدٗا rashadan (the) right path
wa-annā minnā l-mus'limūna waminnā l-qāsiṭūna faman aslama fa-ulāika taḥarraw rashadan
And among us are those who have submitted ˹to Allah˺ and those who are deviant. So ˹as for˺ those who submitted, it is they who have attained Right Guidance.
وَأَمَّا wa-ammā And as for ٱلۡقَٰسِطُونَ l-qāsiṭūna the unjust فَكَانُواْ fakānū they will be لِجَهَنَّمَ lijahannama for Hell حَطَبٗا ḥaṭaban firewood
wa-ammā l-qāsiṭūna fakānū lijahannama ḥaṭaban
And as for the deviant, they will be fuel for Hell.’”
وَأَلَّوِ wa-allawi And that if ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ is'taqāmū they had remained عَلَى ʿalā on ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ l-ṭarīqati the Way لَأَسۡقَيۡنَٰهُم la-asqaynāhum surely We (would) have given them to drink مَّآءً māan water غَدَقٗا ghadaqan (in) abundance
wa-allawi is'taqāmū ʿalā l-ṭarīqati la-asqaynāhum māan ghadaqan
Had the deniers followed the Right Way, We would have certainly granted them abundant rain to drink—
لِّنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ linaftinahum That We might test them فِيهِۚ fīhi therein وَمَن waman And whoever يُعۡرِضۡ yuʿ'riḍ turns away عَن ʿan from ذِكۡرِ dhik'ri the Remembrance رَبِّهِۦ rabbihi (of) his Lord يَسۡلُكۡهُ yasluk'hu He will make him enter عَذَابٗا ʿadhāban a punishment صَعَدٗا ṣaʿadan severe
linaftinahum fīhi waman yuʿ'riḍ ʿan dhik'ri rabbihi yasluk'hu ʿadhāban ṣaʿadan
as a test for them. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of their Lord will be admitted by Him into an overwhelming punishment.
وَأَنَّ wa-anna And that ٱلۡمَسَٰجِدَ l-masājida the masjids لِلَّهِ lillahi (are) for Allah فَلَا falā so (do) not تَدۡعُواْ tadʿū call مَعَ maʿa with ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah أَحَدٗا aḥadan anyone
wa-anna l-masājida lillahi falā tadʿū maʿa l-lahi aḥadan
The places of worship are ˹only˺ for Allah, so do not invoke anyone besides Him.
وَأَنَّهُۥ wa-annahu And that لَمَّا lammā when قَامَ qāma stood up عَبۡدُ ʿabdu (the) slave ٱللَّهِ l-lahi (of) Allah يَدۡعُوهُ yadʿūhu calling (upon) Him كَادُواْ kādū they almost يَكُونُونَ yakūnūna became عَلَيۡهِ ʿalayhi around him لِبَدٗا libadan a compacted mass
wa-annahu lammā qāma ʿabdu l-lahi yadʿūhu kādū yakūnūna ʿalayhi libadan
Yet when the servant of Allah stood up calling upon Him ˹alone˺, the pagans almost swarmed over him.
قُلۡ qul Say إِنَّمَآ innamā Only أَدۡعُواْ adʿū I call upon رَبِّي rabbī my Lord وَلَآ walā and not أُشۡرِكُ ush'riku I associate بِهِۦٓ bihi with Him أَحَدٗا aḥadan anyone
qul innamā adʿū rabbī walā ush'riku bihi aḥadan
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I call only upon my Lord, associating none with Him ˹in worship˺.”
قُلۡ qul Say إِنِّي innī Indeed, I لَآ lā (do) not أَمۡلِكُ amliku possess لَكُمۡ lakum for you ضَرّٗا ḍarran any harm وَلَا walā and not رَشَدٗا rashadan right path
qul innī lā amliku lakum ḍarran walā rashadan
Say, “It is not in my power to harm or benefit you.”
قُلۡ qul Say إِنِّي innī Indeed I لَن lan never يُجِيرَنِي yujīranī can protect me مِنَ mina from ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah أَحَدٞ aḥadun anyone وَلَنۡ walan and never أَجِدَ ajida can I find مِن min from دُونِهِۦ dūnihi besides Him مُلۡتَحَدًا mul'taḥadan any refuge
qul innī lan yujīranī mina l-lahi aḥadun walan ajida min dūnihi mul'taḥadan
Say, “No one can protect me from Allah ˹if I were to disobey Him˺, nor can I find any refuge other than Him.
إِلَّا illā But بَلَٰغٗا balāghan (the) notification مِّنَ mina from ٱللَّهِ l-lahi Allah وَرِسَٰلَٰتِهِۦۚ warisālātihi and His Messages وَمَن waman And whoever يَعۡصِ yaʿṣi disobeys ٱللَّهَ l-laha Allah وَرَسُولَهُۥ warasūlahu and His Messenger فَإِنَّ fa-inna then indeed لَهُۥ lahu for him نَارَ nāra (is the) Fire جَهَنَّمَ jahannama (of) Hell خَٰلِدِينَ khālidīna (they will) abide فِيهَآ fīhā therein أَبَدًا abadan forever
illā balāghan mina l-lahi warisālātihi waman yaʿṣi l-laha warasūlahu fa-inna lahu nāra jahannama khālidīna fīhā abadan
˹My duty is˺ only to convey ˹the truth˺ from Allah and ˹deliver˺ His messages.” And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger will certainly be in the Fire of Hell, to stay there for ever and ever.
حَتَّىٰٓ ḥattā Until إِذَا idhā when رَأَوۡاْ ra-aw they see مَا mā what يُوعَدُونَ yūʿadūna they are promised فَسَيَعۡلَمُونَ fasayaʿlamūna then they will know مَنۡ man who أَضۡعَفُ aḍʿafu (is) weaker نَاصِرٗا nāṣiran (in) helpers وَأَقَلُّ wa-aqallu and fewer عَدَدٗا ʿadadan (in) number
ḥattā idhā ra-aw mā yūʿadūna fasayaʿlamūna man aḍʿafu nāṣiran wa-aqallu ʿadadan
Only when they see what they have been threatened with will they know who is weaker in helpers and inferior in manpower.
قُلۡ qul Say إِنۡ in Not أَدۡرِيٓ adrī I know أَقَرِيبٞ aqarībun whether is near مَّا mā what تُوعَدُونَ tūʿadūna you are promised أَمۡ am or (whether) يَجۡعَلُ yajʿalu will appoint لَهُۥ lahu for it رَبِّيٓ rabbī my Lord أَمَدًا amadan a (distant) term
qul in adrī aqarībun mā tūʿadūna am yajʿalu lahu rabbī amadan
Say, “I do not know if what you are promised is near or my Lord has set a distant time for it.
عَٰلِمُ ʿālimu (The) All-Knower ٱلۡغَيۡبِ l-ghaybi (of) the unseen فَلَا falā so not يُظۡهِرُ yuẓ'hiru He reveals عَلَىٰ ʿalā from غَيۡبِهِۦٓ ghaybihi His unseen أَحَدًا aḥadan (to) anyone
ʿālimu l-ghaybi falā yuẓ'hiru ʿalā ghaybihi aḥadan
˹He is the˺ Knower of the unseen, disclosing none of it to anyone,
إِلَّا illā Except مَنِ mani whom ٱرۡتَضَىٰ ir'taḍā He has approved مِن min of رَّسُولٖ rasūlin a Messenger فَإِنَّهُۥ fa-innahu and indeed, He يَسۡلُكُ yasluku makes to march مِنۢ min from بَيۡنِ bayni before يَدَيۡهِ yadayhi him وَمِنۡ wamin and from خَلۡفِهِۦ khalfihi behind him رَصَدٗا raṣadan a guard
illā mani ir'taḍā min rasūlin fa-innahu yasluku min bayni yadayhi wamin khalfihi raṣadan
except messengers of His choice. Then He appoints angel-guards before and behind them
لِّيَعۡلَمَ liyaʿlama That He may make evident أَن an that قَدۡ qad indeed أَبۡلَغُواْ ablaghū they have conveyed رِسَٰلَٰتِ risālāti (the) Messages رَبِّهِمۡ rabbihim (of) their Lord وَأَحَاطَ wa-aḥāṭa and He has encompassed بِمَا bimā what لَدَيۡهِمۡ ladayhim (is) with them وَأَحۡصَىٰ wa-aḥṣā and He takes account كُلَّ kulla (of) all شَيۡءٍ shayin things عَدَدَۢا ʿadadan (in) number
liyaʿlama an qad ablaghū risālāti rabbihim wa-aḥāṭa bimā ladayhim wa-aḥṣā kulla shayin ʿadadan
to ensure that the messengers fully deliver the messages of their Lord—though He ˹already˺ knows all about them, and keeps account of everything.”
