Al-Layl

وَٱلَّيۡلِwa-al-layliBy the nightإِذَاidhāwhenيَغۡشَىٰyaghshāit covers

wa-al-layli idhā yaghshā

By the night when it covers,

وَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriAnd the dayإِذَاidhāwhenتَجَلَّىٰtajallāit shines in brightness

wal-nahāri idhā tajallā

and the day when it shines!

وَمَاwamāAnd He Whoخَلَقَkhalaqacreatedٱلذَّكَرَl-dhakarathe maleوَٱلۡأُنثَىٰٓwal-unthāand the female

wamā khalaqa l-dhakara wal-unthā

And by ˹the One˺ Who created male and female!

إِنَّinnaIndeedسَعۡيَكُمۡsaʿyakumyour effortsلَشَتَّىٰlashattā(are) surely diverse

inna saʿyakum lashattā

Surely the ends you strive for are diverse.

فَأَمَّاfa-ammāThen as forمَنۡman(him) whoأَعۡطَىٰaʿṭāgivesوَٱتَّقَىٰwa-ittaqāand fears

fa-ammā man aʿṭā wa-ittaqā

As for the one who is charitable, mindful ˹of Allah˺,

وَصَدَّقَwaṣaddaqaAnd believesبِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰbil-ḥus'nāin the best

waṣaddaqa bil-ḥus'nā

and ˹firmly˺ believes in the finest reward,

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥfasanuyassiruhuThen We will ease himلِلۡيُسۡرَىٰlil'yus'rātowards [the] ease

fasanuyassiruhu lil'yus'rā

We will facilitate for them the Way of Ease.

وَأَمَّاwa-ammāBut as forمَنۢman(him) whoبَخِلَbakhilawithholdsوَٱسۡتَغۡنَىٰwa-is'taghnāand considers himself free from need

wa-ammā man bakhila wa-is'taghnā

And as for the one who is stingy, indifferent ˹to Allah˺,

وَكَذَّبَwakadhabaAnd deniesبِٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰbil-ḥus'nāthe best

wakadhaba bil-ḥus'nā

and ˹staunchly˺ denies the finest reward,

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥfasanuyassiruhuThen We will ease himلِلۡعُسۡرَىٰlil'ʿus'rātowards [the] difficulty

fasanuyassiruhu lil'ʿus'rā

We will facilitate for them the path of hardship.

وَمَاwamāAnd notيُغۡنِيyugh'nīwill availعَنۡهُʿanhuhimمَالُهُۥٓmāluhuhis wealthإِذَاidhāwhenتَرَدَّىٰٓtaraddāhe falls

wamā yugh'nī ʿanhu māluhu idhā taraddā

And their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they tumble ˹into Hell˺.

إِنَّinnaIndeedعَلَيۡنَاʿalaynāupon Usلَلۡهُدَىٰlalhudā(is) the guidance

inna ʿalaynā lalhudā

It is certainly upon Us ˹alone˺ to show ˹the way to˺ guidance.

وَإِنَّwa-innaAnd indeedلَنَاlanāfor Usلَلۡأٓخِرَةَlalākhirata(is) the Hereafterوَٱلۡأُولَىٰwal-ūlāand the first (life)

wa-inna lanā lalākhirata wal-ūlā

And surely to Us ˹alone˺ belong this life and the next.

فَأَنذَرۡتُكُمۡfa-andhartukumSo I warn youنَارٗاnāran(of) a Fireتَلَظَّىٰtalaẓẓāblazing

fa-andhartukum nāran talaẓẓā

And so I have warned you of a raging Fire,

لَاlāNotيَصۡلَىٰهَآyaṣlāhāwill burn (in) itإِلَّاillāexceptٱلۡأَشۡقَىl-ashqāthe most wretched

lā yaṣlāhā illā l-ashqā

in which none will burn except the most wretched—

ٱلَّذِيalladhīThe one whoكَذَّبَkadhabadeniedوَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāand turned away

alladhī kadhaba watawallā

who deny and turn away.

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَاwasayujannabuhāBut will be removed from itٱلۡأَتۡقَىl-atqāthe righteous

wasayujannabuhā l-atqā

But the righteous will be spared from it—

ٱلَّذِيalladhīThe one whoيُؤۡتِيyu'tīgivesمَالَهُۥmālahuhis wealthيَتَزَكَّىٰyatazakkā(to) purify himself

alladhī yu'tī mālahu yatazakkā

who donate ˹some of˺ their wealth only to purify themselves,

وَمَاwamāAnd notلِأَحَدٍli-aḥadinfor anyoneعِندَهُۥʿindahuwith himمِنminanyنِّعۡمَةٖniʿ'matinfavorتُجۡزَىٰٓtuj'zāto be recompensed

wamā li-aḥadin ʿindahu min niʿ'matin tuj'zā

not in return for someone’s favours,

إِلَّاillāExceptٱبۡتِغَآءَib'tighāaseekingوَجۡهِwajhi(the) Countenanceرَبِّهِrabbihi(of) his Lordٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰl-aʿlāthe Most High

illā ib'tighāa wajhi rabbihi l-aʿlā

but seeking the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High.

وَلَسَوۡفَwalasawfaAnd soon, surelyيَرۡضَىٰyarḍāhe will be pleased

walasawfa yarḍā

They will certainly be pleased.
