Ash-Shams

وَٱلشَّمۡسِwal-shamsiBy the sunوَضُحَىٰهَاwaḍuḥāhāand its brightness

wal-shamsi waḍuḥāhā

By the sun and its brightness,

وَٱلۡقَمَرِwal-qamariAnd the moonإِذَاidhāwhenتَلَىٰهَاtalāhāit follows it

wal-qamari idhā talāhā

and the moon as it follows it,

وَٱلنَّهَارِwal-nahāriAnd the dayإِذَاidhāwhenجَلَّىٰهَاjallāhāit displays it

wal-nahāri idhā jallāhā

and the day as it unveils it,

وَٱلَّيۡلِwa-al-layliAnd the nightإِذَاidhāwhenيَغۡشَىٰهَاyaghshāhāit covers it

wa-al-layli idhā yaghshāhā

and the night as it conceals it!

وَٱلسَّمَآءِwal-samāiAnd the heavenوَمَاwamāand (He) Whoبَنَىٰهَاbanāhāconstructed it

wal-samāi wamā banāhā

And by heaven and ˹the One˺ Who built it,

وَٱلۡأَرۡضِwal-arḍiAnd the earthوَمَاwamāand by (He) Whoطَحَىٰهَاṭaḥāhāspread it

wal-arḍi wamā ṭaḥāhā

and the earth and ˹the One˺ Who spread it!

وَنَفۡسٖwanafsinAnd (the) soulوَمَاwamāand (He) Whoسَوَّىٰهَاsawwāhāproportioned it

wanafsin wamā sawwāhā

And by the soul and ˹the One˺ Who fashioned it,

فَأَلۡهَمَهَاfa-alhamahāAnd He inspired itفُجُورَهَاfujūrahā(to distinguish) its wickednessوَتَقۡوَىٰهَاwataqwāhāand its righteousness

fa-alhamahā fujūrahā wataqwāhā

then with ˹the knowledge of˺ right and wrong inspired it!

قَدۡqadIndeedأَفۡلَحَaflaḥahe succeedsمَنmanwhoزَكَّىٰهَاzakkāhāpurifies it

qad aflaḥa man zakkāhā

Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul,

وَقَدۡwaqadAnd indeedخَابَkhābahe failsمَنmanwhoدَسَّىٰهَاdassāhāburies it

waqad khāba man dassāhā

and doomed is the one who corrupts it!

كَذَّبَتۡkadhabatDeniedثَمُودُthamūduThamudبِطَغۡوَىٰهَآbiṭaghwāhāby their transgression

kadhabat thamūdu biṭaghwāhā

Thamûd rejected ˹the truth˺ out of arrogance,

إِذِidhiWhenٱنۢبَعَثَinbaʿatha(was) sent forthأَشۡقَىٰهَاashqāhā(the) most wicked of them

idhi inbaʿatha ashqāhā

when the most wicked of them was roused ˹to kill the she-camel˺.

فَقَالَfaqālaBut saidلَهُمۡlahumto themرَسُولُrasūlu(the) Messengerٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahنَاقَةَnāqata(It is the) she-camelٱللَّهِl-lahi(of) Allahوَسُقۡيَٰهَاwasuq'yāhāand her drink

faqāla lahum rasūlu l-lahi nāqata l-lahi wasuq'yāhā

But the messenger of Allah warned them, “˹Do not disturb˺ Allah’s camel and her ˹turn to˺ drink!”

فَكَذَّبُوهُfakadhabūhuBut they denied himفَعَقَرُوهَاfaʿaqarūhāand they hamstrung herفَدَمۡدَمَfadamdamaSo destroyedعَلَيۡهِمۡʿalayhimthemرَبُّهُمrabbuhumtheir Lordبِذَنۢبِهِمۡbidhanbihimfor their sinفَسَوَّىٰهَاfasawwāhāand leveled them

fakadhabūhu faʿaqarūhā fadamdama ʿalayhim rabbuhum bidhanbihim fasawwāhā

Still they defied him and slaughtered her. So their Lord crushed them for their crime, levelling all to the ground.

وَلَاwalāAnd notيَخَافُyakhāfuHe fearsعُقۡبَٰهَاʿuq'bāhāits consequences

walā yakhāfu ʿuq'bāhā

He has no fear of consequences.
