Al-Ma'arij

سَأَلَsa-alaAskedسَآئِلُۢsāiluna questionerبِعَذَابٖbiʿadhābinabout a punishmentوَاقِعٖwāqiʿinbound to happen

sa-ala sāilun biʿadhābin wāqiʿin

A challenger has demanded a punishment bound to come

لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَlil'kāfirīnaTo the disbelieversلَيۡسَlaysanotلَهُۥlahuof itدَافِعٞdāfiʿunany preventer

lil'kāfirīna laysa lahu dāfiʿun

for the disbelievers—to be averted by none—

مِّنَminaFromٱللَّهِl-lahiAllahذِيdhīOwnerٱلۡمَعَارِجِl-maʿāriji(of) the ways of ascent

mina l-lahi dhī l-maʿāriji

from Allah, Lord of pathways of ˹heavenly˺ ascent,

تَعۡرُجُtaʿrujuAscendٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُl-malāikatuthe Angelsوَٱلرُّوحُwal-rūḥuand the Spiritإِلَيۡهِilayhito Himفِيfīinيَوۡمٖyawmina Dayكَانَkāna[is]مِقۡدَارُهُۥmiq'dāruhuits measureخَمۡسِينَkhamsīna(is) fiftyأَلۡفَalfathousandسَنَةٖsanatinyear(s)

taʿruju l-malāikatu wal-rūḥu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miq'dāruhu khamsīna alfa sanatin

˹through which˺ the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit will ascend to Him on a Day fifty thousand years in length.

فَٱصۡبِرۡfa-iṣ'birSo be patientصَبۡرٗاṣabrana patienceجَمِيلًاjamīlangood

fa-iṣ'bir ṣabran jamīlan

So endure ˹this denial, O Prophet,˺ with beautiful patience.

إِنَّهُمۡinnahumIndeed, theyيَرَوۡنَهُۥyarawnahusee itبَعِيدٗاbaʿīdan(as) far off

innahum yarawnahu baʿīdan

They truly see this ˹Day˺ as impossible,

وَنَرَىٰهُwanarāhuBut We see itقَرِيبٗاqarībannear

wanarāhu qarīban

but We see it as inevitable.

يَوۡمَyawma(The) Day تَكُونُtakūnuwill beٱلسَّمَآءُl-samāuthe skyكَٱلۡمُهۡلِkal-muh'lilike molten copper

yawma takūnu l-samāu kal-muh'li

On that Day the sky will be like molten brass

وَتَكُونُwatakūnuAnd will beٱلۡجِبَالُl-jibāluthe mountainsكَٱلۡعِهۡنِkal-ʿih'nilike wool

watakūnu l-jibālu kal-ʿih'ni

and the mountains like ˹tufts of˺ wool.

وَلَاwalāAnd notيَسۡـَٔلُyasaluwill askحَمِيمٌḥamīmuna friendحَمِيمٗاḥamīman(about) a friend

walā yasalu ḥamīmun ḥamīman

And no close friend will ask ˹about˺ their friends,

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚyubaṣṣarūnahumThey will be made to see each otherيَوَدُّyawadduWould wishٱلۡمُجۡرِمُl-muj'rimuthe criminalلَوۡlawifيَفۡتَدِيyaftadīhe (could be) ransomedمِنۡminfromعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishmentيَوۡمِئِذِۭyawmi-idhin(of) that Dayبِبَنِيهِbibanīhiby his children

yubaṣṣarūnahum yawaddu l-muj'rimu law yaftadī min ʿadhābi yawmi-idhin bibanīhi

˹although˺ they will be made to see each other. The wicked will wish to ransom themselves from the punishment of that Day by their children,

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦwaṣāḥibatihiAnd his spouseوَأَخِيهِwa-akhīhiand his brother

waṣāḥibatihi wa-akhīhi

their spouses, their siblings,

وَفَصِيلَتِهِwafaṣīlatihiAnd his nearest kindredٱلَّتِيallatīwhoتُـٔۡوِيهِtu'wīhisheltered him

wafaṣīlatihi allatī tu'wīhi

their clan that sheltered them,

وَمَنwamanAnd whoeverفِيfī(is) onٱلۡأَرۡضِl-arḍithe earthجَمِيعٗاjamīʿanallثُمَّthummathenيُنجِيهِyunjīhiit (could) save him

waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan thumma yunjīhi

and everyone on earth altogether, just to save themselves.

كـَلَّآۖkallāBy no meansإِنَّهَاinnahāIndeed, it (is)لَظَىٰlaẓāsurely a Flame of Hell

kallā innahā laẓā

But no! There will certainly be a raging Flame

نَزَّاعَةٗnazzāʿatanA removerلِّلشَّوَىٰlilshawāof the skin of the head

nazzāʿatan lilshawā

ripping off scalps.

تَدۡعُواْtadʿūInvitingمَنۡman(him) whoأَدۡبَرَadbaraturned his backوَتَوَلَّىٰwatawallāand went away

tadʿū man adbara watawallā

It will summon whoever turned their backs ˹on Allah˺ and turned away ˹from the truth˺,

وَجَمَعَwajamaʿaAnd collectedفَأَوۡعَىٰٓfa-awʿāand hoarded

wajamaʿa fa-awʿā

and gathered and hoarded ˹wealth˺.

۞ إِنَّinnaIndeedٱلۡإِنسَٰنَl-insānathe manخُلِقَkhuliqawas createdهَلُوعًاhalūʿananxious

inna l-insāna khuliqa halūʿan

Indeed, humankind was created impatient:

إِذَاidhāWhenمَسَّهُmassahutouches himٱلشَّرُّl-sharuthe evilجَزُوعٗاjazūʿandistressed

idhā massahu l-sharu jazūʿan

distressed when touched with evil,

وَإِذَاwa-idhāAnd whenمَسَّهُmassahutouches himٱلۡخَيۡرُl-khayruthe goodمَنُوعًاmanūʿanwithholding

wa-idhā massahu l-khayru manūʿan

and withholding when touched with good—

إِلَّاillāExceptٱلۡمُصَلِّينَl-muṣalīnathose who pray

illā l-muṣalīna

except those who pray,

ٱلَّذِينَalladhīnaThose whoهُمۡhum[they]عَلَىٰʿalāatصَلَاتِهِمۡṣalātihimtheir prayerدَآئِمُونَdāimūna(are) constant

alladhīna hum ʿalā ṣalātihim dāimūna

consistently performing their prayers;

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoفِيٓfīinأَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡamwālihimtheir wealthحَقّٞḥaqqun(is) a rightمَّعۡلُومٞmaʿlūmunknown

wa-alladhīna fī amwālihim ḥaqqun maʿlūmun

and who give the rightful share of their wealth

لِّلسَّآئِلِlilssāiliFor the one who asksوَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِwal-maḥrūmiand the deprived

lilssāili wal-maḥrūmi

to the beggar and the poor;

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoيُصَدِّقُونَyuṣaddiqūnaaccept (the) truthبِيَوۡمِbiyawmi(of the) Dayٱلدِّينِl-dīni(of) the Judgment

wa-alladhīna yuṣaddiqūna biyawmi l-dīni

and who ˹firmly˺ believe in the Day of Judgment;

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمhum[they]مِّنۡminofعَذَابِʿadhābi(the) punishmentرَبِّهِمrabbihim(of) their Lordمُّشۡفِقُونَmush'fiqūna(are) fearful

wa-alladhīna hum min ʿadhābi rabbihim mush'fiqūna

and those who fear the punishment of their Lord—

إِنَّinnaIndeedعَذَابَʿadhāba(the) punishmentرَبِّهِمۡrabbihim(of) your Lordغَيۡرُghayru(is) notمَأۡمُونٖmamūninto be felt secure (of)

inna ʿadhāba rabbihim ghayru mamūnin

˹knowing that˺ none should feel secure from their Lord’s punishment—

وَٱلَّذِينَwa-alladhīnaAnd those whoهُمۡhum[they]لِفُرُوجِهِمۡlifurūjihimtheir modestyحَٰفِظُونَḥāfiẓūna(are) guardians

wa-alladhīna hum lifurūjihim ḥāfiẓūna

and those who guard their chastity

إِلَّاillāExceptعَلَىٰٓʿalāfromأَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡazwājihimtheir spousesأَوۡaworمَاmāwhatمَلَكَتۡmalakatthey possessأَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡaymānuhumrightfullyفَإِنَّهُمۡfa-innahumthen indeed, theyغَيۡرُghayru(are) notمَلُومِينَmalūmīnablameworthy

illā ʿalā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa-innahum ghayru malūmīna

except with their wives or those ˹bondwomen˺ in their possession, for then they are free from blame,
